March 30, 1901.
Dear Mr. Muir,
Thank you for your letter which came two or three days ago, and for the photographs which have also arrived, two lots of them, one in a roll, and the rest flat.I shall begin looking over the copy for the book in the various numbers of the magazine in which the articles have appeared, and shall be quite eager to get the last chapter—for I think it is the last--which you now have in hand.
Yours sincerely,
n.b.parker.
Mr. John Muir.

Martinez, March 28/01
My dear Merriam -
How are you and the Baileys? How have you got through the winter? Hard at work no doubt. Every day I'm looking for the Alaska book. How sad and wise you will be ere you get all the Harriman volumes off your hands.
I'm still working on the last chapter of my forest book. For illustrations I would like to use three or four of the Harriman Curtis photos. Some time when writing to Mr. H. on book work I wish you would ask permission to reproduce them.
Remember me to the Baileys. …

My dear Mr.LeConte:
I'll not be able to accept your kind invitation at the time you set. I'm hard at work finishing a little book about the Forest Reserves and Nat. parks, and the publishers are pushing me unmercifully, calling for copy and illustrations, lest the book be delayed beyond the most favorable time. But after this job is off my hands I'll be glad to accept your kind invitation. In the meantime I must practice strict self-denial and stick to my desk. Of course I know Miss Gompertz, …

The fine lot of tree photographs came the other day, for which I thank you very much. I never before saw photo of the Torrey pine. I hope your health is getting better & that Mrs Lukens will soon recover, we are very sorry to learn she is so ill - sickness seems to be common everywhere this winter & spring. I'm sorry to hear such bad news of poor Ned Carr. I wish I knew how to do anything for him. Tell your daughter Mrs …

Dear Muir:
I thank you cordially for your letter of congratulations. They are delightful but previous.The Silva is not finished and very little of the last two volumes is actually written. The publishers have said that it will probably be out during the first half of next year, but before those two volumes see the light of day I must travel many weary miles and repose in many beds which would make that delightful hostelry at Waldo, Oregon, appear like the palace of a sybarite.If you stay quietly in Martinez and think that Canby …

Mr. John Muir,
Martinez California;
Dear Mr. Muir;
I have wondered for many years prior to the year 1893 if the John Muir, the indefatigable geologist botanist and discoverer of glaciers, was the same man who was so kind and attractive to me, and Indianapolis boy many years ago. The short sketch in the Century of May '93, where it states that John Muir went to Indianapolis and entered the employ of a large wagon material factory (Osgood & Smith) convinced me that my boy friend of the Early seventies, is the selfsame man who …

Of course I have been constantly making comparisons of everything with Alaska and to speak of the Harriman Expedition is to recall my roommate during those two delightful months on the Elder. A man with the brain of a philosopher, the imagination of a poet, & the heart of a child: that is John Muir Simplicity, unostentatiousness, tenderheartedness characterize him. Imagination of a poet - is he a poet? We may at least class him with those of whom Wordsworth says "Oh, many are the poets that are sown 'By Nature, men endowed with the highest gifts, 'The vision and the faculty divine" Possibly - "wanting the accomplishment of verse" Philosopher? Yes: he goes behind the visible & tangible - phenomena - and seeks …

My dear friend,
Janet sends by today's mail a little piece of her own handiwork. She thought perhaps Mrs Muir would be pleased by her remembrance. She was very happy in the doing of it. Physically, she is much better; but 'the voices' those evil spirits, still annoy her & she cannot control herself but talks much of the time. The rest of us are tolerably well, and I hope that you & your family are in good health. I want to ask you if you might chance to have a letter or …

I am very sorry to learn the sad news of your son's death - your only child, so hopeful and beloved.
I wish I could say or do anything to help in this supreme affliction, the sorest and most unbearable that belongs to mortals, but words are of no avail. More than 12 years ago we nearly lost one of our little girls, and the anxious agony we then suffered is forever unforgettable.

Captain Frank Weir,
Dear Sir:
Many thanks for permission to use the admirable illustrations of your report on the Sequoia parks. Grand telling tree pictures are very hard to get even from the most accessible forests (much more from those of the Kaweah). Your report recalls a long,rough,lonely three mos. trip I made 25 years [ago] from Yo[semite] along the Sequoia belt to its southern extremity in the head of Deer Creek, tracing the boundaries of all the groves and forests and the gaps between them. It was …

The funny fake about the destruction of the Alaska glaciers by the earthquake of Sep. 1900? was believed and swallowed by most everybody, and I have been commiserated and consoled with at a great rate ever since on the loss of the poor fragile Muir Glacier. I have been busy telling the mourners to dry their tears for as far as earthquakes are concerned glaciers are less destructible than the mountains.
