Letter From John Muir To [Charles F.] Lummis, [19]05 Jun 13., John Muir

John Muir Correspondence (PDFs)

Palm Springs, Cal.

June 13 / 05.

Dear Mr. Lummis: -

You made no mistake in sending us here. The water is cool and delightful, so are the nights. The days hot enough and dry enough to evaporate every disease and all one's flesh. On our arrival the first night we lay down under an olive tree in the sandy orchard, and the heat of the sand along our spines brought vividedly to mind Milton's unlucky angels lying on the burning marl. But O the beauty of the sky evening and morning and

Dear Mrs. Swett –

Those doughnuts !!!! Brown cycles of delight are now doing their duty, spending their sweetness in the three Muir pilgrims at balmly palmly Palm Springs. Like the doughnuts among other food so are the Palm Spring gardens beside the blazing desert – an oasis of shade and figs and orioles. Do you remember Milton’s account of the unlucky fallen angels frying like doughnuts in burning Hades ward? So we fried and sizzled in the red hot

Dear Mr. Lukins -

We arrived at Palm Springs last evening and were grately surprised to find Helen here. She was glad to see us as I think she was feeling very lonely and we are all glad to have her here. It is a charming place, a true oasis in the desert like a Garden of Eden in the Sahara. We are delighted with the air and with the charming Doctor and Mrs Murry. We are already "stuck together" as the Scotch …

Dear Mr Muir,

I take shame to myself that your kind letter of Feb. 15th and the most interesting book which accompanied it should have remained so long unacknowedged. Pressure of work must be my excuse, and also the desire to know more of the contents of my present in order the better to thank you for it. I have now read several chapters to my wife, and we are both very pleased with the sympathetic interpretation you gave of some of nature's loveliest and rarest pleases.

Yosemite Storms And Floods., John Muir

John Muir: A Reading Bibliography by Kimes (Muir articles 1866-1986)

YOSEMITE STORMS AND FLOODS By JOHN MUIR ALL the upper branches of the Sierra rivers are buried every winter beneath a heavy mantle of snow, and set free in the spring- in magnificent floods. Then, the thousand thousand fountains full and overflowing, every living thing breaks forth into singing, and the glad streams, outspread over all the mountains, shine and fall in glorious light, shaking everything into music, making all the world a song. The great annual thaw begins in May in the forest region, and is in full overflowing prime over the high Sierra in. June, varying somewhat both …

A large percent of the area of the valley is below sea level and has a salt water table within twenty feet of the surface, but the Gov. experts say that a proper drainage systems will prevent the water table rising any closer to the surface.

"The Craftsman" which you so kindly sent us was duly received and we thank you for the pleasure its perusal has given us.
The newspaper people didn't learn of your visit to Stockton until some three days after you were here. Then they came down on me with a rush to learn particulars. I enjoyed poking fun at them about their lack of enterprise as witnessed by the fact that a man of your size could spend a day here without their …
