Good man and Friend,

I hardly believe that you have had a sign of life from us me since we enjoyed your company when you were In Berkeley.
But then, you know how things are here and they do not change very much. This is the year when I can do a little gardening work, and I am grateful that there are people who put trust in me and come to me with their needs.

Dear Muir:

I am very glad to see your handwriting again and very sorry indeed to hear about your daughter and of your anxiety concerning her. I cannot help hoping, however, that Arizona will be of permanent service to her.
I wish I thought I was going to Mexico this winter. There never will be a better time because Mr. Shaw, our Pinus expert, is there for several months now with a home in the City of Mexico and he would be able to show us all the trees, etc. …

Dear Mr Calkins:

Here are copies of H. H. pamphlet sent to each of our 1000 club members with request that they write to Sec. Garfield or the President protesting against destruction of Hetch Hetchy Valley
It is difficult however to find many writers who are known & whose words carry effective weight like those of your Iowa friends. Prof. Macbride etc. I was in luck however in getting the help of John W. Dear Mr. Colby:

I suppose you have seen this Call editorial on H.H., and may have written in a reply. Now that the Eastern papers have taken up the question, the Phelan scheme organs will be compelled to come out in the open, though evidently they hoped to put the scheme through under cover of silence and darkness.
Besides the letter from the Cherry Creek's president, I had one lately from a Stanislaus Company stating they had abundance of water available for city supply, but did not wish to interfere in the H.H. fight, etc. going …

Dear Mr Johnson

I don't know anything about Mr. Bourne although I have often heard that the Hetch Hetchy & other Sierra water schemes were not made in good faith but as weapons of attack on the Spring Valley Co for pecuniary purposes. Every mention of Sierra water in the press always had something about the purchase of Spring Valley connected with it. Anyhow the call for Hetch Hetchy as a reservoir comes not from the citizens of S. F. but from Mr. Phelan & his few hired promoters & pleaders--such as Marsden Manson & Warren …

Many thanks for your capital Hetch Hetchy defense editorial, It's strong & every blow is called for, & must tell. Dear Sir:-

You are undoubtedly right in your contention as to the Red Fir & Douglas Spruce, These trees are not in the least alike. The leaves also are very different as doubtless you well know.

Ok i THE TUOLUMNE YOSEMITE IN DANGER BY JOHN MUIR THE Hetch Hetchy Valley, " that wonderful counterpart of Yosemite" as State Geologist Whitney called it, was discovered by Mr. Joseph Sereech in 1850, the year before the discovery of Yosemite, when the Digger Indians held possession of it as an acorn orchard. After my first visit in the autumn of 1871, I have always called it the Tuolumne Yosemite, for it is a wonderfully exact counterpart of the great Yosemite, not only in its ciystal river and sublime rocks and waterfalls, but in the gardens, groves, and meadows / …
