Retired Marine officer and National Defense University research fellow Frank Hoffman’s Mars Adapting is, first and foremost, a work of military theory. Hoffman initially achieved notoriety for his work and briefs about something he characterized as hybrid or compound warfare, since popularized alongside the rise in interest in gray-zone conflict. This book’s major contribution is similarly theoretical, but in the area of institutional learning, not modalities of war. Hoffman argues “for greater consideration of Organizational Learning Theory [OLT] to establish an analytical framework.”

Historians have debated the role of stereotypes and hostile language in the diversion of the Fourth Crusade to Constantinople mostly through the outdated "Clash of Civilizations" lens. This work investigates the role of hostile stereotypes in both Western and Byzantine narrative histories discussing the first four crusades through a deep textual and literary analysis. This work argues that contemporary narrative histories from the first four crusades demonstrate that virulently hostile attitudes abounded in both Byzantine and Western sources, and that these attitudes greatly affected diplomatic and political decision making during Byzantine-Crusader interactions from 1096-1204. When this step is taken, it becomes clear that humanity chooses the violence defining war. Calls to transform the initial Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) standards to reflect social justice have garnered little attention. Recent events have magnified the racial injustices inflicted upon Black people in America and their ability to participate as full equals in a society influenced and characterized by white supremacy. Using critical race theory (CRT) as a framework, the authors examine the racial formulation of the historical and current installations of SHAPE America’s initial PETE Standards to illustrate the influence of white supremacy in PETE programs, the relationship to physical literacy, and the impact on Black students. This article explores the discourses of Minister Wesley Albert Swift (1913–1970), one of the original and leading proponents of Christian Identity, a racial theology movement which emerged in the United States after World War II. It is not the aim of this study to analyze the discourse of Christian Identity as an isolated element, but to understand its interrelation with the political-religious culture of the country during the 1950s and 1960s. "Commerce and Justice: Ottoman and Venetian Courts in Istanbul during the Seventeenth Century” analyzes legal disputes and economic transactions between Ottoman and Venetian merchants in Istanbul on a daily basis between 1600 and1620. At that time, the Venetians constituted the largest European community in the Ottoman capital, and they engaged intensively in trade ventures with Ottoman businessmen belonging to different religious and ethnic communities, including Muslim Turks, Sephardic Jews, and Orthodox Greeks. Why did a strong centralizing British imperial state emerge in South Asia in the eighteenth century? The partial loss of the British Empire in North America, the ferment of partisan politics in Britain and the rise of powerful regional South Asian states during this period amply demonstrate that such a transformation was not inevitable. This dissertation argues that continuous and multi-sited contestation drove British imperial state-building in South Asia. This dissertation provides insight in the methodologies utilized by leaders of jihadist terrorist organizations who create a dedicated following in their pursuit of establishing a global caliphate. The research in this project illustrates a linkage from these charismatic leaders to the sacred edicts of the Koran, the Hadith, the Sunna, Sharia (Islamic jurisprudence), and the prophet Muhammad. Moreover, it bears out a unique perspective in academic national security studies which delves deeper than similar published works regarding subject matter focused on both violent and stealth jihad (also known as the non-violent usurpation of non-Islamic cultures). This thesis is meant to advance scholars understanding of the processes by which various groups silenced the memory of Civil War white dissent in Mississippi. It analyzes three case studies: F. A. P. Barnard’s 1860 trial for abolitionism, the transformation of community memory which surrounded Newt Knight in the early twentieth century, and Mississippi’s interaction with the Civil War through popular culture. These examples will reveal the cultural and discursive systems that have existed in the state for more than a century.
