‘Binding Of Isaac’ Focus Of Farms Conference, Lecture
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Genesis 22 records that God commanded Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac upon an altar but intervened at the last moment, providing instead a ram for the actual sacrifice and greatly blessing Abraham for passing what has come to be viewed as the ultimate test of obedience to God’s will. The account, simple enough in outline, is nevertheless seen by different religious traditions as profoundly symbolic and even enigmatic, its moral and religious implications having spawned numerous interpretations.

Dsm Discrimination And The Lgbt Community: Using The History Of Diagnostic Discrimination Against Sexual Minorities To Contextualize Current Issues In Transgender And Gender Diverse Mental Healthcare, Ginelle Wolfe, Nicole Fogwell
Psychology from the Margins
This paper provides a historical context of diagnoses in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) related to sexual orientation and gender identity. We use the historical context of psychology’s discrimination against sexual minorities (e.g., lesbian, gay, and bisexual persons) to critique current discriminatory practices targeting gender diverse (i.e., trans, nonbinary, and other not cisgender) persons- specifically, the explicit pathologizing of gender variance. The events that led to the removal of homosexuality as a diagnosis are discussed, as are subsequent diagnoses related to sexual orientation and gender identity that continue to pathologize gender variance. The Right Stuff: Material Culture, Comfort, And The Making Of Explorers, 1820-1940, Sarah Mendoza Pickman

This is a dissertation about unpacking packing. It uses the things that British and American explorers packed for their journeys as a lens for understanding how ideas of comfort shaped Anglophone exploration, colonialism, and capitalism in the long nineteenth century. It starts with a group of seemingly mundane objects that were ubiquitous in the packing lists of these explorers, like chocolate, raincoats, and tents. Tracing these objects from raw material to consumer commodity, the dissertation argues that explorers made these items essential for their comfort in “extreme” environments. In doing so, they naturalized concepts of physical and psychological comfort that …

“A History of the Ottoman Atlas: The Material Culture of Geographical Knowledge in the Ottoman Empire” examines the material manifestations of scientific changes in the Ottoman reading world. Looking at the relationship between the atlas and geography, it argues that the transformation of the material form of the atlas informed Ottoman intellectuals’ understanding of the scope and methodology of geographical knowledge. Early Ottoman atlases adhered to centuries-old traditions of cosmographies and topographical histories, which were predominantly textual. Virtue Signals: Narrative, Self-Transformation, And Behavioral Exemplarity In Xv-Century Italian Renaissance Humanist Biography In Poland And Ukraine, Michael Thomas Lo Piano

This dissertation approaches the question which follows: who was the first Renaissance humanist in the Polish Crown Lands? As such, it attempts to reconcile the scholarly debate across a number of linguistic traditions regarding the identity and origin of the humanist movement in East Central Europe. It principally focuses on the Tuscan humanist Filippo Buonaccorsi (Callimachus Experiens) and his biography of Archbishop Grzegorz of Sanok entitled the Vita et mores Gregorii Sanocei. It examines the literary structure and form of the biography to assess Buonaccorsi’s claims regarding the origins of humanism in the Polish Crown Lands and evaluates these claims …

By examining the events that led to the outbreak of the First World War, one can determine whether any one nation was responsible for starting the war or failed to exercise its ability to prevent it. The origins of The First World War have seen no shortage of attention from historians in the hundred-plus years since its conclusion. Nevertheless, none have successfully presented a case that explains how what should have been a relatively minor diplomatic crisis transformed into the First World War. Sustaining The Individual In The Collective: A Kantian Perspective For A Sustainable World, Zachary Vereb

Individualist normative theories appear inadequate for the complex moral challenges of climate change. In climate ethics, this is especially notable with the relative marginalization of Kant. I argue that Kant's philosophy, understood through its historical and cosmopolitan dimensions, has untapped potential for the climate crisis. First, I situate Kant in climate ethics and evaluate his marginalization due to perceived individualism, interiority and anthropocentrism. Then, I explore aspects of Kant's historical and cosmopolitan writings, which present a global, future-orientated picture of humanity. Ultimately, Kant's philosophy offers a unique take on the climate deadlock capable of sustaining the individual in the collective.

Since the 1970s, economic inequality has soared dramatically across the globe and particularly in the United States. In that time, one of the obstacles of using fiscal policy to address inequality has been the growing myth of the “overtaxed American”—the misguided notion that U.S. taxpayers pay more in taxes than residents of other advanced, industrialized countries. This myth has persisted, in part, because of the peculiar and distinctive nature of the fractured American fiscal and social welfare state. Conservatives At The Movies: Conservative Film Critics And Popular Culture, Alex Pinelli

The study of modern American conservatism has flourished in the 21st century. However, there are some gaping holes in the historiography. One is the intersection between conservativism and popular culture and the arts. This study aimed to remedy this by analyzing hundreds of film reviews in nearly a dozen conservative publications over twenty-five years. In doing so, this first-of-its-kind analysis explored the underexamined world of the conservative film critic, while also identifying a group of principles that unified the varying critics under one conservative banner.

Cartography, Territory And Empire Mapping The Alaska Boundary Dispute, 1821-1903, Michael Letzring

In the wake of the Klondike gold rush of 1898 a long-simmering dispute over the boundary between Alaska territory and British-America (Canada) rose to a boil. The disagreement between the United States and England was a combination of imperial arrogance, geographic ignorance, administrative neglect, and diplomatic brinksmanship. At every step the dispute was fueled by colonial cartography and served an eventual European/Euro-American hegemony over the indigenous Tlingit people.
