Collateral Damage: The History Of United States Case Law On Today's Military Hunger Strike Doctrine, Adrian Mora

HYPOTHESIS/AIMS: In the Global War on Terror (GWOT), hunger strikes by detainees in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba have been managed by military physicians through force feedings. This thesis answers the question of how did the United States justify its current practice of force feeding prisoners against prevailing medical ethics? The author hypothesizes that U.S. case law history of approximately 1979 to 1997 enabled the current military doctrine to force feed international detainees in GWOT.

This Honors project is a site of intersection of my academic and activist interests in interrogating Whiteness, my social identity as a cultural Jewish American, and my creative passions in comedy performance. The tragicomic films The Graduate, Goodbye, Columbus, and Annie Hall of the 1960s and 1970s articulate the painful process of Jewish self- and group-definition in relation to dominant culture amidst fractures amongst Jews and external hostility and invitation. Sweetness functions as a symbolic prop for human desire. My artwork questions the cost of this desire, troubling what can and should be consumed, while negotiating the environmental and social histories of human desire for sugar. This project generates a subjective history for the strange, perhaps unnatural, commodities that people desire, through which I aim to plant them more firmly into the natural world from which they have been separated by so much plastic, foil, and ornament.

It has been the "historical tendency of anti-discrimination law to use categories to define protected classes of people." This Article challenges the categorical approach and seeks to change that limited framework. This Article focuses on the flaws with Title VII's categorical approach and discusses why there is a desperate need for change to combat the different types and targets of workplace discrimination today, focusing on the transgender community as one example. After discussing the current framework and operation of Title VII, this Article analyzes the insurmountable flaws inherent in the categorical approach to anti-discrimination law, and specifically considers Title VII's …

This dissertation examines environmental change on and around Narragansett Bay from first European settlement in 1636 to the dissolution of the Blackstone Canal Company in 1849. It uses one of the largest estuaries on the East Coast and one situated at the heart of early English settlement in New England as a means to write estuaries into Atlantic history. Examining the ecological and epistemological complexities that arose at the nexus of land and sea, where improvable space and the push of "progress" met an eternal or "profound" ocean, this study reframes estuaries as watery borderlands that people used but never …

Out of 2.4 billion drugs prescribed throughout America in 2005, antidepressants accounted for 118 million of them. Family doctor Ronald Dworkin, one of many critics of antidepressant use in America, argues that doctor's are now "medicating unhappiness."! However, his blanket statement completely overlooks the history of antidepressant use in the United States. The use of prescription drugs to treat "unhappiness" is not a new phenomenon. Before modern antidepressants, tranquilizers such as Librium and Valium were used to treat outpatient-based mental illness.
