The Burden Of The Past: Spectral History In The Works Of Carlos Fuentes, 1962-80, Lee Elizabeth Kirven
The Burden Of The Past: Spectral History In The Works Of Carlos Fuentes, 1962-80, Lee Elizabeth Kirven
Theses and Dissertations--Hispanic Studies
The works of Carlos Fuentes are well known for their thematics of History, how the past continues to influence the present despite mechanisms of historical omission, oblivion, or repression. This dissertation offers a spectral reading of a selection of Fuentes’ works—La muerte de Artemio Cruz (1962), Aura (1962), Cambio de piel (1967), Terra nostra (1975), and Una familia lejana (1980)—that represents his vision of Mexican, Latin American, and Transatlantic history. A spectral reading refers to the hidden or indirect ways that the past continues to manifest in the present as specters, ghosts—unconscious and unwitting remembrances of repressed or unknown …

Guardians Of Chastity And Morality: A Century Of Silence In Social Work, Elizabeth O'Neill
Guardians Of Chastity And Morality: A Century Of Silence In Social Work, Elizabeth O'Neill
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Reflecting the social norms of the late 1800s and early 1900s, much of social work practice aimed to promote moral sexual behavior and penalize deviance. Even following the widespread adoption of psychoanalytic theory in the United States, social work persisted in having a poorly defined role with regard to issues of sexuality. In the 21st century, the profession continues to largely limit its involvement in matters of sexuality to those practice situations where deviance and public health concerns predominate. Limited topical exposure in peer-reviewed publications and the lack of broad-based human sexuality education for social workers perpetuate the invisibility of …
In Black And White: The Sociopolitical Rhetoric Surrounding Anti-Miscegenation Attitudes In Ohio, Sarah Mccrea
In Black And White: The Sociopolitical Rhetoric Surrounding Anti-Miscegenation Attitudes In Ohio, Sarah Mccrea
Senior Independent Study Theses
In this study, I argue that the appearance of anti-miscegenation writings in Ohio spiked during periods that saw massive threats to the notion of white male supremacy, such as the months just prior to the onset of the Civil War, several especially tense points during the Civil War and the Reconstruction period, and the early to middle years of the 1880s. During these times, Ohioans used at least one of three major rhetorical strategies—each of which coincided with a major trend in national events and politics—to justify and explain their anti-miscegenation attitudes.
When the Ohio State Legislature first debated the …

The Supreme Court’s decision in Burnham v. Superior Court — despite producing a splintered vote with no opinion garnering a majority of the Court — made one thing clear: an individual defendant can be subject to personal jurisdiction simply by being served with process while he or she happens to be in a forum regardless of whether the defendant has any contacts with that forum. This method of acquiring personal jurisdiction is called transient or “tag” jurisdiction. Tag jurisdiction is older than minimum contacts jurisdiction, and used to be the primary method for determining whether an out of state defendant …
Power, Subjectivity, And Life In Spain: A Continuation Of Elite Power, Matthew Mason
Power, Subjectivity, And Life In Spain: A Continuation Of Elite Power, Matthew Mason
Master's Theses
On December 20, Spain will hold national elections to determine the new prime minister and national and local parliaments. These elections will be another crossroads in the long history of Spain. The elections come about in a political and social atmosphere of ‘change’ and ‘regeneration,’ marked by the rise of two new political parties, Podemos and Ciudanos. These parties are the new forces in the political scene in Spain. This atmosphere of change is the result of the 2008 economic crisis. The economic crisis of 2008 was not only an economic crisis in Spain, but it provoked a political and …

From A Chat In The Parlor To Viral Music Videos: An Analysis Of Music As A Social Occasion, Emma Plotnik
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Imagine an intimate room filled with people playing cards and casually chatting, while one of Chopin’s piano sonatas plays elegantly in the background. This scenario is characteristic of the atmosphere surrounding Classical and Romantic European salons. Salons served as havens of musical discourse from the Baroque era to the early twentieth century. However, with the advancement of technology from the mid-twentieth century to the present, there has been a decline, or, arguably, even a cessation of salon life.
The aim of this project was to recreate the salon environment through the generation of the online discussion forum, "Music Soirée." To …

This newsletter began with the Fall 2015 Honors English class. These students were challenged to initiate research over a topic they thought was interesting and show how it related to our campus, Stephen F. Austin State University. It is our hope that this cumulative research will help readers look at SFA a little differently.

SURGE
“What are some examples of white privilege?” my professor asked.
I felt an audible tension in the class as this was asked. This is a tricky subject, especially when you’re talking to a class full of mostly white, privileged people (myself included). [excerpt]
Gun Shows: The Social Construction Of An Armed Event, Rodger A. Bates
Gun Shows: The Social Construction Of An Armed Event, Rodger A. Bates
The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology
Gun shows have long been a part of the American cultural scene, and they involve the sale of firearms, ammunition and related accessories and provide a venue for the interaction of a number of sub-cultural groups. This paper describes and analyzes the social construction of gun shows through participant observation and interviews, and it identifies and examines the norms, practices, myths and realities of the gun show culture.
Liberating Genocide: An Activist Concept And Historical Understanding, Tony Barta
Liberating Genocide: An Activist Concept And Historical Understanding, Tony Barta
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
From the outset, historians of genocide have seen themselves as activists. Among historians of colonial societies that is what distinguishes them most in relation to indigenous peoples. An ethnographic sensibility should be visible in any such study, and the more so when a question of genocide is raised. After all, if we do not have a sense of difference between peoples we fail the test of genocide at the first hurdle. And if we do not have an ethnographic sensibility towards our own cultures (including academic cultures) we will fail to make the most of our role in affecting deeply …
The Living Heritage Of Prepping, Julianna Marilyn Lindsay
The Living Heritage Of Prepping, Julianna Marilyn Lindsay
Student Theses and Dissertations
Within the prepping community there are a subgroup of preppers, homesteaders, and survivalists who to varying degrees base their behaviors and motivations on heritage connections. These connections are found in the form of heritage values which inform their actions. Prepping, survivalism, and homesteading are not a monolithic movement or even necessarily seen as a movement at all by participants who may share no connections with others involved in the same activities. Although preppers, homesteaders, and survivalists may display some of the same behaviors such as stockpiling food or other aspects of material and intangible culture, their motivations may vary widely. …

Weathering The Empire: Meteorological Research In The Early Nineteenth-Century Straits Settlements, Fiona Williamson
Weathering The Empire: Meteorological Research In The Early Nineteenth-Century Straits Settlements, Fiona Williamson
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
This article explores meteorological interest and experimentation in the early history of the Straits Settlements. It centres on the establishment of an observatory in 1840s Singapore and examines the channels that linked the observatory to a global community of scientists, colonial officers and a reading public. It will argue that, although the value of overseas meteorological investigation was recognized by the British government, investment was piecemeal and progress in the field often relied on the commitment and enthusiasm of individuals. In the Straits Settlements, as elsewhere, these individuals were drawn from military or medical backgrounds, rather than trained as dedicated …

The Struggle For Promoting Development. An Inter-American Analysis On The Making Of The Alliance For Progress. Argentina, Venezuela And The United States, Cristobal Espinoza
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This study analyzes the making Alliance for Progress from an Inter-American perspective by exploring the relationship between United States, Argentina and Venezuela during the implementation of the program. Based upon Inter-American research, this study explains the complexity and contradictions that aroused from this Development alliance. By placing special attention to the Inter-American complexities and contradictions behind the conceptualization and implementation of the Alliance for Progress, this study shows why Argentina and Venezuela had very different relationship with the program. Moreover, this work explains the reasons behind the Alliance's inability to promote Development based on democracy and economic growth. This study …

Memory, History, And Forgetting In The Sandra Allen Collection Of Papers On Mormonism: A Feminist Rhetorical Historiography Of Institutional Intervention In The Equal Rights Amendment, Valerie Kinsey
English Language and Literature ETDs
This dissertation leverages archival theory, public memory theory, feminist historiography, and rhetorical theory to argue that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints reinterpreted the Mormon past to engender identification and foster political action during the Equal Rights Amendment ratification period (1976-1981). Chapter One provides readers with an orientation to the Sandra Allen Collection of Papers on Mormonism and argues that its creator, Sandra Allen, marshaled her understanding of archiving, history writing, and institutional archives to make her history public. Chapter Two: On Memory uses theories of public memory to explain why the Mormon Church built the Nauvoo Monument …
“New Bottles Made With My Crest”: Colonial Bottle Seals From Eastern North America, A Gazetteer And Interpretation, Richard Veit, Paul R. Huey
“New Bottles Made With My Crest”: Colonial Bottle Seals From Eastern North America, A Gazetteer And Interpretation, Richard Veit, Paul R. Huey
Northeast Historical Archaeology
Bottle seals or crests are one of the more intriguing categories of artifacts recovered from historic archaeological sites. These small blobs of glass were applied to the necks or shoulders of bottles. They were embossed with initials, shields, and other insignia. They bear dates, as well as the initials and names of individuals and families, taverns, vineyards, schools, retailers, and military units. Archaeologists seriating blown glass bottles from colonial sites in North America have employed them as important dating tools. They have also been interpreted as status markers. This paper provides a gazetteer of bottles with seals from eastern North …
