John Muir Correspondence (PDFs)

March 24th, 1890

Dear Mr. Muir,-

I inclose a copy of Mr. Olmsted's letter in reply to Governor Waterman. This letter has been published during the past week in the New York Evening Post. I also inclose a copy ofVanderveer's bill, the only fault of which is that the limits of the new Park are too narrow. Yesterday's New York Times published the, fifth(inclosed) letter from Mackenzie confounding Waterman, and the New York Sun of March 21st contains an editorial appealing to the independent press of California to intervene for the protection of the Valley.
I shall appear before the …

February 20th, 1890

Dear Mr. Muir, -

I am very glad to learn that you are at work on the proposed extension of the Yosemite Valley Grant.
As you seem a lit tied troubled about going over the old ground of the Yosemite itself, I have hit upon a man who will relieve you of that part of it, leaving you free to consider only the portion outside of the Valley, and [illegible] Big Tree reservation. Of course, this will not cut you off from mentioning anything you want inside of the present grant; but it would relieve you of …

23rd September, 1889.

My dear Muir:

I thank you very much for your attention to my telegram. You know we print nearly six weeks in advance of our issue, and I did not want to delay the Yosemite business later than the December number if possible to avoid it. I hope what you say will be direct and vigorous; it need not be comprehensive.
As I have already said, we should certainly like to have you write the paper on Kings River Canon, and then we can print the two papers in successive numbers of the Magazine. Whatever you do, …

John Muir Correspondence (PDFs)

21st August, 1889.

Dear Mr Muir:

We have not yet heard from you in regard to the set of the "Century" concerning which I believe Mr Scott wrote you some weeks ago, thinking it best to tell you how much they would cost before shipping them. He thought you would prefer this. I believe he has put them at their very lowest figure; about or quite at cost.
It will be a great favor to us if you could fix a date at which we might expect the Yosemite article. Meanwhile would it not be well for you to write …

Mr. John Muir
Martinez, Cal.
My dear Muir,

I have seen both the Examiner article and the Argonaut criticism and have written to the former disavowing responsibility for that article, of course taking no notice of the Pixley-Irish card. I have also written shaprly to Hearst and to Williams, the man who made up the interview from a private conversation with me on my way back from Los Angeles. It is, however, such an article as I cannot endorse, containing much that is not mine either in material or in expression, and in jumping into a …

John Muir And The Reporter., John Muir

John Muir: A Reading Bibliography by Kimes (Muir articles 1866-1986)

10 OAKLAND LEDGER. JOHN MUIR AND THE REPORTER. The writer recently visited the home of the explorer of the great Alaska glacier that bears his name, and spent about an hour with him in his study. A second meeting with him was held at the residence of California's famed educator John Swett. Then came a third meeting with Mr. Muir at his lovely home in the Alhambra Valley near Martinez. When I first met John M uir he expressed a horror at meeting newspaper men, and said they were almost a unit in misrepresenting things. I told him that I …

Chico, June 27, 1889.

Dear Mr. Muir:

I was so rushed during the last 48 hours of my stay that I did not get time to write you. I was much disappointed to hear you could not come north. As I can only stay here to-day I have brought along Mr. Shinn, who will attend to getting the article out of the General --- perhaps by the help of a Sacramen to stenographer. We went over last night and I was charmed with both the General and Mrs. Bidwell. We are to go over this morning and take lunch with …

John Muir.

Martinez, Cal

Friend and whilom fellow-climber:

Your most cordially welcome, genial and eloquent letter came to hand a few days since. I was “right down” glad to hear from you, and hope you will favor me more than this once in the way of correspondence. I was sincerely glad, too, to hear something about our companion du voyage cap a mountain, Keith, who, it appears from your letter, has labored arduously with brush and canvas to give further fame to our grand old Rainier.

John Muir Correspondence (PDFs)

[DRAFT] [MUIR to RUJ] [ca1889]

You must not think because this sketch is lean & scrawny that I have slighted my task. I have spent 3 weeks of hard work on it & have done my best to give a view of the American forests as they were & are, & how they have been & are being destroyed. In broad sketching I was embarrassed by my knowledge, & in particularly by ignorance, but Ive just done the best I could. As an Editor with your finger on the public pulse, change the middle of the article as you like, …

The Element Of Locality In The Law Of Criminal Jurisdiction, Henry W. Rogers Jan 1889

The Element Of Locality In The Law Of Criminal Jurisdiction, Henry W. Rogers

Articles

THE Federal Courts have no common law criminal jurisdiction. The question was raised in the United States Circuit Court for the District of Pennsylvania, in 1798, in United States v. Worrall, 2 Dallas, 384, and the Court was equally divided in opinion. Iii 1818, Mr. Justice STORY, in United States v. Coolidge, 1 Gallison, 488, decided that there were common law offences against the United States. But this, as we shall see, was overruled by the Supreme Court. As early as 1807, Chief Justice MARSHALL, in Ex parte .Bollman, 4 Cranch, 75, had said, "This Court disclaims all jurisdiction not …
