BUEL,ASSISTANT EDITOR.Dear Mr. President:Please do not misunderstand my position on the Hetch-Hetchy question.Human life is more sacred than scenery, and if it were the only alternative, sooner than see the city of California go without an abundant supply of good water I would cheerfully dam up the Yosemite itself! Both as concerns the city and the Yosemite National Park this is a matter of colossal importance. To Theodore Roosevelt[Martinez, CaliforniaApril 21, 1908]Dear Mr. President:I am anxious that the Yosemite National Park may be saved from all sorts of commercialism & marks of man's work other than the roads, hotels, etc., required to make its wonders & blessings available. For as far as I have seen there is not in all the wonderful Sierra, or indeed in the world, another so grand & wonderful & useful a block of Nature's mountain handiwork. There is now under consideration, as doubtless you well know, an application of San Francisco Supervisors for the use of Hetch Hetchy Valley & Lake Eleanor …

Dear Mr. Muir:
It is not often that we have so keen pleasure as that which came to us to-day in Mr. Ticknor's letter telling us that we may hope soon to have the opportunity of publishing a book by you. There are several of us here in the office who have long been great admirers of "Stickteen," and we believe we can make a very successful little book of it. We will be particularly glad to give the book a place upon our fall list, which is, as it chances, an uncommonly good one; and we …

My Dear Friend:
Your kindly greeting by card was very grateful to me. I note your name occasionally in the papers. Once, perhaps two years ago, with keen regret that you were reported dangerously ill. I trust that you recovery has been complete.
I am doing some very congenial work for the public just now which this letter head discloses. This will be mailed from Des Moines when I am just closing a two weeks stay delving among old archives and old newspapers and interviewing old citizens. For there are no official records on file of …

My dear Mr Muir
The suit for condemnation of the 47 acres in the heart of Muir Woods is still pending.
There is little doubt of the outcome. At the same time no better thing can be done than to continue to arouse public opinion as to the present and future value to the people of this beautiful and restful wilderness.
I wish you could write a letter which I can publish leaving out anything laudatory of my action, but stating your view of the value of the property and the hope that adjoining owners may …

' It is impossible to overestimate the value of wild mountains and mountain temples as places for people to grow in, recreation grounds for soul and body. They are the greatest of our natural resources, God's best gifts, but none, however high and holy, is beyond reach of the spoiler. In these ravaging money-mad days monopolizing San Francisco capitalists are now doing their best to destroy the Yosemite Park, the most wonderful of all our great mountain national parks. It is evident that no one hard and fast rule could be applied to all cases, either in city or country, without producing injustice and impolitic results. The needs and conditions in city and country are different. They usually differ widely in different parts of the same city. These considerations have induced the Supreme Court of New Hampshire to adopt the flexible rule, that: "In determining this question all the circumstances of the case would, of course, be considered; and among them the nature and importance of the improvements sought to be made, the extent of the interference with the …

The origin of law schools is lost in antiquity. It is probable there were advocates in Babylonia,1 and schools for the education of judges and scribes (perhaps the ancestral lawyers) in Egypt,2 more than 2000 years B.C. The Civil Code of Deuteronomy was published 621 B.C.,3 and soon afterward schools of the prophets were formed for its study.4 When Ezra left Babylon for Jerusalem (485 B.C.) he "set his heart * * * to teach in Jerusalem statutes and judgments,"5 and the ruins of his school could be seen by the law students at Husal, 500 years later.6 It is …

Your issue of the 10th inst. contained a criticism of my position on "The Hatch Hetchy Water Supply" and I assume that you will be fair enough to give me a "square deal" in the matter and hence send you this reply.
