Martinez Dec 31, 1908.Dear Mr Colby:I'll help you out in the matter of Mr Bade's Washington expenses, but all our 1000 minds should show their interest in the great cause, & their public spirit. I think I wrote you that I told R U Johnson that I would pay gladly all his expenses incurred in Washington since he complained that he was unable to do as much as he might on acct of cost of travel etc.If the great corporations are with us we will win. If not we may lose this particular fight. But truth & right must prevail …

Martinez, Dec 27, 1908Dear Mr Colby:All my time for the last week or two has vanished in this Park business & with your & Parsons grand work I fancy the enemy must be having no end of the trouble that belongs to the wicked - Have you seen Mr H yet? I have been anxious to go to the City to talk things over but I got so severe a cold the last time & the weather is so foggy I'm afraid to venture.I hardly think the presence of one of use would count for much with those politicians in …

San Francisco, Dec.24, 1908.
Allen Chamberlain Esq.,Suite 4, 130 Pinckney St., Boston, Mass.
My Dear Mr. Chamberlain:-
I do not feel justified in sitting down and hurriedly writing a letter for the Boston Transcript tonight, but tonight and tomorrow will try to prepare one, submitting it to Mr.Colby, and send it off to you Saturday, so that you may get it published in the "Transcript" possibly on the 1st or 2nd. In it we will try to cover the points made by Fitzgerald and by your wordy and dust throwing friend, Frank Cramer of Palo Alto, whom none of …

Dear Mr. Johnson: Martinez, Dec. 24, 1908 Well done & doing for you. Let us keep hammering the Vandals & we will beat them yet. Hon. S. C. Smith, Hon. W. F. Englebright, & Hon. Frank Mondell (Chairman of Committee on Public Lands), House of Representatives, are all with us I believe. It seems incredible that so barbarous a step backward as the destruction of a Yosemite Valley could possible be taken by Congress, or that such a question could game a hearing anywhere in Civilization-Good luck & good yearEver faithfully your friend John MuirMartinez, Dec. 1, 1908

San Francisco, Cal., Dec.. 21 ,1908.
TO ALL LOVERS OF NATURE AND SCENERY:-
The Yosemite National Park was created in 1890 in order that the unrivaled aggregation of scenic features of this great natural wonderland should be preserved in pure wildness for all time for the benefit Of the entire nation: the Yosemite Valley was already preserved in a State Park, and the National Park was created primarily to protect the Hetch-Hetchy Valley and Tuolumne Meadows from invasion. The Hetch-Hetchy Valley is a wonderfully exact counterpart of the great Yosemite, not only in its crystal river, sublime cliffs and exquisite …

Dear Mr Johnson: Martinez, Dec. 7 1908. I have good hope of winning our park fight in Congress notwithstanding the desperate struggle the schemers are making. The bond vote is no measure of the wishes of the citizens as to Hetch Hetchy water, or even a Sierra water supply.Anyhow we must fight the thieves & robbers now & always. Things refuse to be mismanaged long, & all the enlightened public opinion of the world is with us--Faithfully yours John MuirMartinez, Dec. 1, 1908.

Dear Mr Colby:
I've written to Johnson & H. & if he goes seriously into the fight we must keep up the fight anyhow as if all depended on us, & I think even without other outside aid than public opinion we will be able to stop the destroyers. Send the best of our published stuff to all the Congress.

This is issued by citizens who are interested solely in the welfare of San Francisco and who have no interest whatever in any water supply available for San Francisco.
TO THE VOTERS OF SAN FRANCISCO:
Almost all of our citizens favor a municipal water supply. We want the best there is---acquired on the best terms possible and for the least cost.
The IMMEDIATE QUESTION before the people is the HETCH-HETCHY SUPPLY. The following are SOME OF THE REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD NOT VOTE BONDS FOR OR FAVOR THIS PROPOSITION :

Dear Mr. Muir:
We beg to enclose herewith duplicate contracts for the publication of "Stickeen". Please sign them both, and return one to us.
We should have wished in this case, as in the case of "Our National Parks", to have offered you a royalty upon a sliding scale, but in view of the small size of this book and the necessarily low price at which it must be sold, a royalty of straight ten per cent has seemed to us an equitable arrangement, for while, owing to …

My dear Muir,
I have read James's letter and, if he is sincere, I should say that the way to do would he to ask him to send you those letters. If he is such an admirer of yours as he professes to he , he ought to he willing to give you an opportunity of Judging which are or which are not to he published. If he does'nt do that, you have the legal recourse, if you desire to exercise it, of enjoining against …

Dear Mr Johnson;
The governors Conference was a most novel & notable affair & you may well be proud of it as your own invention whether you get credit for it or not - from the public. Nevertheless Pinchot deliberate acceptanc[e?] of the honor belonging to it without a word for you was distressingly mean & must prove a great trial to his many friends. Anyhow never mind, dont take the sin against friendship & comradeship too sorely to heart. Compensation of some sort or other is sure to come, & we must go ahead fighting …
