John Muir Correspondence (PDFs)

November 7, 1913.

Dear Mr. Muir:

I thank you for your letter to me of October 25th andfor the pictures and papers which accompanied it.
I have always been opposed to the use of the Hetch Hetchy Valley as a water supply for San Francisco, and have repeatedly testified against the scheme. I think the best thing I can now do in defense of the Valley is to write a letter to Senator Hollis of Hew Hampshire, a young Democratic politician in whom I feel an interest and who has some respect for my opinion. I shall endeavor to put …

Oct. 29, 1913.

Mr Timothy Cole:

Dear Sir.

In reply to yours of Oct. 8th I thank you very warmly for your assistance in the work of defending our national parks from invasion by commercial and other despoilers, especially in the case of Hetch Hetchy in the Yosemite. Other circulars will be sent you. A thorough awakening of public opinion is all that is required to defeat the Raker Hetch Hetchly bill. Its passage as I suppose you know has been blocked in the Senate, & will not come up to be voted on until December. Meanwhile we …

It’s pleasant to be remembered in this way in the midst of this long drawn out battle for our National parks. I’ve done no other work since the present fight began – over three months. A letter from Mrs. Kellogg told your journey east. Glad you are again at work on your book. I hope to see it before it goes to press. I never saw any M.S. so fine as yours. I …

School and work about my house and yard so far are pushing my writing and drawing aside, but I am making a strenuous effort to systematize and make some definite time each day for my other work

Ever since we first published Stickeen, we have had the feeling that the children in our public schools should have access to this wonderful story. We have reason to hope that it will prove to be a permanent educational classic like Ouida's Dog of Flanders. We believe the time has now come when a school edition of this story could be issued without materially affecting its trade sale. Grabbing The Hetch Hetchy., John Muir

John Muir: A Reading Bibliography by Kimes (Muir articles 1866-1986)

GRABBING THE HETCH HETCHY. With very few exceptions, the newspapers of the country are protesting against the proposed gift of the Hetch Hetchy valley to the city of San Francisco for a water supply. "Of course the San Francisco newspapers champion the project, and so do a few others. But the- overwhelming sentiment, taking the country through, Is manifestly in opposition. ..This valley is now a national park, reserved for that purpose on account of its marvellous scenic beauty. It is the property of the nation, not of the. city Of San Francisco, nor the stale of California. The engineers …
