John Paul Scott Oral History, John Paul Scott Aug 1986

John Paul Scott Oral History, John Paul Scott

Oral History Collection

Susan Mehrtens' Note:

Dr. J.P. Scott was the head of animal behavioral research at Hamilton Station. He carne to our meeting with a thoughtful outline, and spoke to it for most of our interview. His tape, as a result, is mostly a monologue. This tape is extremely valuable because Jax threw away all the records of Hamilton Station, so only the accounts of Scott, Fuller and Fox (in this project) can provide a record of this aspect of the Lab's past. Scott indicates how pervasive was the network in which his work was conducted, and how many noteworthy figures or …

Willys Silver Oral History, Willys Silver Aug 1986

Willys Silver Oral History, Willys Silver

Oral History Collection

Susan Mehrtens' Note:

Both Will Silvers and I enjoyed this interview, despite the hot, stuffy room we had at the Lab (in which the wind seemed to howl incessantly, through some pinhole crack somewhere, as is audible on tape). Initially at a loss as to what to expect in this process, Silvers soon moved into high gear and his verve and excitement are obvious. Perhaps more than anyone else included in this project, Silvers spans the constituencies ~f the Lab, as summer student, employee, summer investigator, and finally BSO member. He is forthcoming about all these roles, giving us a …

Elizabeth "Tibby" Russell Oral History, Elizabeth Russell Jun 1986

Elizabeth "Tibby" Russell Oral History, Elizabeth Russell

Oral History Collection

Susan Mehrtens' Note:

This three-way interview, between Tibby, Judith Swazey and me, took place in Tibby's home. In the days before this interview, I had interviewed many Jax personnel whose reminiscences had "primed" me for this meeting with one of the most colorful, distinctive and beloved old-time Jax scientists. Tibby has had a remarkable impact on Jax, both in terms of substantial science and also in a human, personal way, as a friend, mentor and colleague to many of the summer students, later to be lab scientists and administrators. Where she could have spoken at length of C.C. Little and …

American Studies: Civil War, The Correlation Of Literature And History Studies In High School, Arlene Kellogg May 1986

American Studies: Civil War, The Correlation Of Literature And History Studies In High School, Arlene Kellogg

Theses

Courses in history can be nothing but memorizing facts, and courses in literature can be writing without roots . The author proposes a correlated curriculum for high school American literature and history, specifically in the Civil War time frame to change this situation.

The purpose of this curriculum, "American Studies: Civil War," is to make the history of our country live for the student, giving him/her a feeling for the mood of the times and motivating him/her to become politically active as a young citizen.

To validate the proposal, the author has interviewed experts in the fields of literature, history …

Futuristic Education: Hopeful Realism, Marc Blosveren, Kay Long, Jacqueline Norcel, Robert Zwicker, Barbara Zuffa Jan 1986

Futuristic Education: Hopeful Realism, Marc Blosveren, Kay Long, Jacqueline Norcel, Robert Zwicker, Barbara Zuffa

Sacred Heart University Review

As educators we must look ahead if we want our students to survive, adapt, and prosper in the fast-changing world of the twenty first century. Educators must demonstrate a responsibility for the future. The proper attitude to develop is a philosophy of "hopeful realism." With hopeful realism a person has a clear appreciation of the issues and risks that lie ahead but also a recognition of the emerging solutions and opportunities. Hopeful realism teaches not for the computer but rather for how one can apply the knowledge and power gained by using that computer. It exemplifies values that will continue …

Reflections On Denmark As It Was, And Emigration To America, Arlow W. Andersen Jan 1986

Reflections On Denmark As It Was, And Emigration To America, Arlow W. Andersen

The Bridge

In the late medieval and modern periods the histories of Denmark and Norway paralleled each other. During much of that interval the Union of Kalmar (1397-1523), which included also a dynastic tie with Sweden, practically insured common political, economic, and religious development. On the threshold of the modern age Sweden broke away from the Union (1523), but Norway was obliged to remain under Danish rule until 1814.

Chinese American Images In Selected Children's Fiction For Kindergarten Through Sixth Grade, Laureen Chew Jan 1986

Chinese American Images In Selected Children's Fiction For Kindergarten Through Sixth Grade, Laureen Chew

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to investigate Chinese American images in selected children's fiction to determine whether or not data support the position of the Council on Interracial Books for Children, that the works of fiction studied tend to stereotype Chinese Americans.

After reading the selected fifteen works of fiction, a criterion checklist was devised by the investigator to examine the behavior and lifestyle of Chinese Americans depicted in a variety of circumstances. validity of the criterion checklist was established by a panel of experts in the area of Chinese American studies. Inter-rater reliability was determined by two readers …
