The Animal Research Controversy: Protest, Process & Public Policy, Andrew N. Rowan, Franklin M. Loew, Joan C. Weer

Experimentation Collection

The controversy today regarding the use of animals in research appears on the surface to be a strongly polarized struggle between the scientific community and the animal protection movement. However, there is a wide range of opinions and philosophies on both sides. Mistrust between the factions has blossomed while communication has withered. Through the 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s, the animal movement grew in numbers and financial resources, and developed much greater public recognition and political clout. The research community paid relatively little attention to the animal movement for much of this period but, alarmed by several public relations coups …

Wiretapping And National Security: Nixon, The Mitchell Doctrine, And The White Panthers. Volume I., Jeff A. Hale

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation discusses a modern version of a constitutional struggle which has characterized American democracy since the first days of the Republic: the citizen's right to privacy versus the Government's need to guarantee "national security." It addresses the Supreme Court's landmark Fourth Amendment wiretapping decision of June 1972, U.S. v. In its unanimous Keith decision, the Court upheld the "primacy of warrants" in domestic intelligence investigations. Keith remains the …

The Woman In The Dock Is A Monster: An Investigation Of Female Criminality In The Hearings Of The Perth Supreme Court, 1890-1914, Debra A. Fletcher

It is, however, an accepted fact that historically women commit significantly less crimes than men and their criminal activity is generally of a far less violent nature. However, when women do physically harm others, the act most often involves family members and utilises domestic tools in the commission of the crimes. …
