Tape Vs. Tape Emulation, Adam Pardee
Tape Vs. Tape Emulation, Adam Pardee
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
With digital recording becoming a standard at every studio, analog recording by means of reel tape is becoming a thing of the past. Audiophiles and engineers alike will talk of how amazing the sound of tape is. In the digital realm, companies are making vast improvements on making plugins that can emulate the sound of classic tape machines. This Capstone looks at the history and mechanics of tape machines and their digital counterparts, the differences and similarities between the two, and their respective roles in studios.

A Great Invisible Crashing: The Rise And Fall Of Patent Eligibility Through Mayo V. Prometheus, Scott Pierce
A Great Invisible Crashing: The Rise And Fall Of Patent Eligibility Through Mayo V. Prometheus, Scott Pierce
Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal
Title 35 of the United States Code at Section 101 states that “[w]hoever invents or discovers any new and useful process, machine, manufacture, or composition of matter, or any new and useful improvement thereof, may obtain a patent therefor, subject to the conditions and requirements of this title.” Despite the apparent simplicity of the statute and its predecessors, the boundaries of patent eligibility dictated by the term “process” and the term “art” that it replaced, along with the terms “machine,” “manufacture” and “composition of matter,” have become increasingly uncertain over the course of the last two-hundred years. Recently, the lack …

White Female Criminals In Civil War Richmond, 1860-1865, Frances Sisson
White Female Criminals In Civil War Richmond, 1860-1865, Frances Sisson
Honors Theses
This study tells the story of white female criminals and addresses the problem of the white female criminality and the resulting reaction of the patriarchal society in Richmond, Virginia during the Civil War, specifically the years 1861-1864. During the Civil War, white female criminality became a daily occurrence because of the wartime conditions in Richmond, such as inflation and overpopulation. Because of the established patriarchal society and the lack of emphasis on the women's rights movement in the South, the female involvement in crime during the war was extremely shocking to the male driven society. The judicial system struggled with …
The Exit Myth: Family Law, Gender Roles, And Changing Attitudes Toward Female Victims Of Domestic Violence, Carolyn B. Ramsey
The Exit Myth: Family Law, Gender Roles, And Changing Attitudes Toward Female Victims Of Domestic Violence, Carolyn B. Ramsey
Michigan Journal of Gender & Law
This Article presents a hypothesis suggesting how and why the criminal justice response to domestic violence changed, over the course of the twentieth century, from sympathy for abused women and a surprising degree of state intervention in intimate relationships to the apathy and discrimination that the battered women' movement exposed. The riddle of declining public sympathy for female victims ofintimate-partner violence can only be solved by looking beyond the criminal law to the social and legal changes that created the Exit Myth. While the situation that gave rise to the battered womens movement in the 1970s is often presumed to …
Surrender And Subordination: Birth Mothers And Adoption Law Reform, Elizabeth J. Samuels
Surrender And Subordination: Birth Mothers And Adoption Law Reform, Elizabeth J. Samuels
Michigan Journal of Gender & Law
For more than thirty years, adoption law reform advocates have been seeking to restore for adult adoptees the right to access their original birth certificates, a right that was lost in all but two states between the late 1930s and 1990. The advocates have faced strong opposition and have succeeded only in recent years and only in eight states. Among the most vigorous advocates for access are birth mothers who surrendered their children during a time it was believed that adoption would relieve unmarried women of shame and restore them to a respectable life. The birth mother advocates say that …
An Incomplete Revolution: Feminists And The Legacy Of Marital-Property Reform, Mary Ziegler
An Incomplete Revolution: Feminists And The Legacy Of Marital-Property Reform, Mary Ziegler
Michigan Journal of Gender & Law
As this Article shows, the conventional historical narrative of the divorce revolution is not so much incorrect as incomplete. Histories of the divorce revolution have focused disproportionately on the introduction of no-fault rules and have correctly concluded that women's groups did not play a central role in the introduction of such laws. However, work on divorce law has not adequately addressed the history of marital-property reform or engaged with scholarship on the struggle for the Equal Rights Amendment to the federal Constitution. Putting these two bodies of work in dialogue with one another, the Article provides the first comprehensive history …
Courts Of Appeal And Colonialism In The British Caribbean: A Case For The Caribbean Court Of Justice, Ezekiel Rediker
Courts Of Appeal And Colonialism In The British Caribbean: A Case For The Caribbean Court Of Justice, Ezekiel Rediker
Michigan Journal of International Law
In recent years, a public debate on law and the colonial legacy has engaged people of all walks of life in the English Speaking Caribbean (ESC), from judges and politicians to young people in the streets. Throughout the ESC, the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council (JCPC)—based in London and composed of British jurists—has been the highest court of appeal since the colonial era. In the past decade, however, Caribbean governments have sought greater control over their legal systems. In 2005, they created the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) to supplant the British Privy Council as the Supreme Court for …
"An Ill-Judged Piece Of Business": The Failure Of Slave Trade Suppression In A Slaveholding Republic, Sarah A. Batterson
"An Ill-Judged Piece Of Business": The Failure Of Slave Trade Suppression In A Slaveholding Republic, Sarah A. Batterson
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation examines the U.S. suppression of the slave trade from the ratification of the Constitution in 1789 to the onset of the Civil War in 1861. Instead of studying the slave trade in isolation, this dissertation evaluates U.S. slave trade policy within the context of the development of federal power during the early republic and antebellum period. This work assesses the disconnect between the harsh laws against the slave trade and the United States' ineffectiveness at suppressing the trade, especially since, at its founding, U.S. involvement in the African slave trade seemed to have a looming expiration date.

Contextualizando La Enfermedad: Educación Física, Fútbol Y Tuberculosis En El Buenos Aires Moderno, Diego Armus
History Faculty Works
This article argues that history is more than discourses. It uses the case of football/soccer in order to explore the tensions that crisscross professional discourses –those articulated by the emergent physical education professors- and corporal practices –those of children inside and outside primary school- since the end of the 19th century up to the 1950s. The discussion aims at weaving these issues with two key issues of the period: the construction of the “Argentine race” and the history of tuberculosis.

Historical And Modern Conceptualization Of Adhd: A Neurobiological Perspective, Nikolas Santamaria
Historical And Modern Conceptualization Of Adhd: A Neurobiological Perspective, Nikolas Santamaria
Theses & ETDs
This paper seeks not only to analyze the current neurobiological concepts of attention deficit disorder, but to examine the disorder from a historical perspective and to study its development. The historical review begins with Hippocrates and studies its evolution of the disorder throughout the 20th century, including early neurobiological theories such as minimal brain damage/dysfunction and the catecholamine hypothesis. Through studying the history, it seems that some but not all of the behavioral disorders observed could have been fact attention deficit disorder. Due to the complexity and diversity of the symptoms of attention deficit disorder, symptoms closer to the genetic …
The Practical Theology Of The General Rules, Andrew C. Thompson
The Practical Theology Of The General Rules, Andrew C. Thompson
The Asbury Journal
The “General Rules of the United Societies” were a central component of the early Methodist movement under John Wesley’s leadership. Examinations of the General Rules in contemporary literature tend to focus on their role in personal and organizational discipline for early Methodists and for the movement as a whole. Yet a close examination of the rules shows that they served a greater purpose: as the practical theological articulation of how Methodists could expect to experience sanctification in the context of their lives. This crucial aspect of the General Rules’ use can be seen by exploring Wesley’s understanding of the means …

At The Hands Of The Papacy: The Decline Of Sacral Kingship And The Reign Of King Henry Iv, Shelby Von Hofe
At The Hands Of The Papacy: The Decline Of Sacral Kingship And The Reign Of King Henry Iv, Shelby Von Hofe
Theses & ETDs
This thesis discusses how the events of the reign of Henry IV of Germany, 1056–1106, were symptomatic of the decline in political significance of sacral kingship. While the monarchy was anchored in the idea of sacral kingship, the society of the German Empire was changing and developing in ways that left this conception of kingship behind. By exploring the relationship between the crown and the nobility, the Imperial Church, and the papacy during the early Salian dynasty (1024–1125), it is evident that the reign of Henry IV coincides with the decline in the significance of sacral kingship. The actions of …
