History And Theology In The Writings Of The Chronicler, Peter R. Ackroyd Sep 1967

History And Theology In The Writings Of The Chronicler, Peter R. Ackroyd

Concordia Theological Monthly

It would seem as if the Greek title of the two books of Chronicles, Ta Paraleipomena (“The things omitted") has left a certain legacy of doubt about the value of the work of the Chronicler. In liturgical use as well as in reconstructions of the history, particularly those of a more conservative kind, the tendency has often been for passages from 1 and 2 Chronicles to be inserted or utilized at what appear to be appropriate places when Samuel and Kings are being read or the history of that period is being surveyed, by way of supplementing the material covered …

Joys Of Discovery- Historical Research And Writing, Leroy R. Hafen Oct 1966

Joys Of Discovery- Historical Research And Writing, Leroy R. Hafen

BYU Studies

Brigham Young University history professor LeRoy Hafen lauds the merits of pursuing expertise in history, citing the thrill of discovery that historians feel when they uncover the facts. Hafen defines history as a cross between science and art—science because historians seek to find facts, art because the study of human behavior cannot always result in completely accurate discoveries. Additionally, history is an art because a historian must organize and retell the facts in an appealing way, striving for literary excellence as well as accuracy. Hafen describes the process of historical research, including making use of both primary and secondary sources …

A Historical Study Of Silver Reef: Southern Utah Mining Town, Alfred Bleak Stucki Jan 1966

A Historical Study Of Silver Reef: Southern Utah Mining Town, Alfred Bleak Stucki

Theses and Dissertations

While a number of short articles and histories of Silver Reef have been written, they tend either to be anecdotal in character or to emphasize the merely sensational aspects of the mining camp. These writings have failed to investigate some of the most basic sources of information concerning this highly interesting mining epic in Southern Utah. Therefore, there remains a real need for a thoroughly researched and documented history of silver Reef - a need that this thesis tries to meet.

The Concept Of History In The Thought Of Rudolf Bultmann And Reinhold Niebuhr, Joseph H. Bragg Jr. Jan 1966

The Concept Of History In The Thought Of Rudolf Bultmann And Reinhold Niebuhr, Joseph H. Bragg Jr.

Graduate Thesis Collection

The question of the nature and meaning of history has become increasingly important in contemporary thought. In theological circles, it has become the central theme of discussion. Thereare a number of reasons why this is so. The events of the times in which we live have brought about a definite rejection of any knowledge-equals-progress idea of history as well as a call for interpretation of the profound social crises which we confront. The widespread influence of existentialism, with its emphasis on relativism and subjectivism, has brought into question not only the nature of history, in terms of present reality, but …

The Originality Of Fredrick Jackson Turner As An Historian And Teacher, Norman Gale Lamprey

Graduate Student Research Papers

The originality of Frederick Jackson Turner can be recognized against a background consisting of evidence of his contributions to the two fields, history and teaching. The stage will be set by a short biographical treatment of Turner. This avenue of approach will lead to an elaboration of Turner's major historical interpretation. This concept will be described and two subordinate facets of his thesis will be examined briefly. The teaching aspects of Turner's career will be illuminated by analyzing the inseparable historian-teacher relationship and, in addition, the quality and lasting effects of his influence will be treated. A History Of The Utah State University Elementary Teacher Education Laboratory School, R. Eyre Turner

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Utah State University has had a university controlled elementary teacher education laboratory school since 1928. The Whittier continued to be used until the summer of 1957 when the newly constructed Edith Bowen Laboratory School became the center of elementary teacher education.

Staff members in the Department of Education and other interested people have repeatedly asked questions about the Laboratory School. They have desired to know what factors prepared the way and stimulated its establishment. They have sought to …

British Statutes In American Law, 1776-1836, Elizabeth Gaspar Brown Jan 1964

British Statutes In American Law, 1776-1836, Elizabeth Gaspar Brown

Books

When a dependency severs its formal connection with the mother country - irrespective of the century in which such severance occurs - the act of independence can neither eradicate the past nor solve all problems of the future. In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the United States of America discovered that independence from Great Britain in itself did not abolish the need for rules and regulations by which men could anticipate with some degree of certainty the consequences of particular actions. Wholesale adoption of such English statutes as were suited to their condition offered a solution to the …

A Historical Study Of The Role Of The Industrialist In The Tobacco, Flour And Textile Industries Of Virginia 1860-1890, Leslie Winston Smith

Master's Theses

The primary objective of this study is to ascertain what part, if any, the prominent industrialists of Virginia, in the postwar-pretwentieth century period, played in the economic rejuvenation of a state that was ravaged for four years by invaders and defenders alike. Cognizant of the fact that Virginia industry after 1865 was attending a degree of diversification, nonetheless, this study will be limited to three primary industries, namely tobacco, flour and textiles. Even though these three industries, with the possible exception of textiles, were found in most towns and cities throughout the state, only four cities have been selected for …

Carl Becker And The Historian As Priest And Prophet, R. Kent Fielding Jan 1959

Carl Becker And The Historian As Priest And Prophet, R. Kent Fielding

BYU Studies

Carl Becker once made the observation that when eighteenth-century rationalists lifted the religious ideals of the thirteenth century and placed them on a secular base, the historian became the new priest. The author uses this imagery to explore Becker's views of history and to compare his views with those of other influential historians.

An Historical Study Of The Pole Vault, Ray Frederick Kring

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The pole vault is an event performed in track and field athletics wherein the athlete, with the aid of a pole 14 and 15 feet in length, attempts to clear a crossbar resting on two pegs supported by two standards. The standards, or uprights, are placed not less than 12 feet nor more than 13 feet apart. The vaulter cushions his fall in a pit filled with shavings. The object of the event is to vault higher than your competitors.

A Historical Study Of The Congressional Career, John T. Caine, Judith Ann Roderick

John T. Caine, an adept leader in the national and local political arena, was one of the best known and most highly respected men in Utah during the territorial era. A History Of The Missionary Activities Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In The Near East, 1884-1929, Rao H. Lindsay

Theses and Dissertations

In the wake of the Protestant penetration into the Near East, Jacob Spori was sent to Constantinople in 1884 to open a mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Turkey. Spori and later his companion, Joseph M. Tanner, preached first to the Europeans of Constantinople, then projected their efforts down into the major cities of Palestine. Among the German colonists, the missionaries found several valuable converts, most of whom emigrated to Utah.

Ferdinand F. Hintze gained the title "Father of the Armenian Mission" through his extensive preaching tours throughout the interior of Asia Minor. He found …

With Lamps Burning, M. Grace Mcdonald Osb Jan 1957

With Lamps Burning, M. Grace Mcdonald Osb

Saint Benedict’s Monastery Books

It is the purpose of this book to trace the growth of the Convent of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, Minnesota, from its establishment to the present time. In doing so, the author has attempted to show how a frontier country modified the character of an Old World Benedictine convent with its centuries of tradition, and how at the same time this religious community influenced in its turn the cultural and religious life of Minnesota and the Midwest. The author has found it necessary, therefore, to describe the environment – national, political, and religious – into which the sisters ventured. …

George Edward Percy Careless: His Contributions To The Musical Culture Of Utah And The Significance Of His Life And Works, Howard Hoggan Putnam

Theses and Dissertations

Through study of the conditions of the past one is often able to appreciate the present a great deal more. Particularly does this seem true when one looks into the early musical activities in our State of Utah. Most people are aware of the great amount of musical activities existing at the present time in Utah, but many fail to stop and realize the background of work and effort applied to bring these musical experiences before the public. Many fail to realize the pioneering work done by individuals to advance music to its present degree of performance. Names such as …

Latter-Day Saint Servicemen In The Philippine Islands: A Historical Study Of Their Religious Activities And Influences Resulting In The Official Organization Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In The Philippines, Lowell Eliason Call

Theses and Dissertations

Though generally unheard of in the Western world and the United States prior to the Spanish-American War of 1898, the Filipino people have made some remarkable contributions to world leadership and world history. Frequently they have been considered a pagan and an ignorant people, although in objectively observing them one finds such a belief unfounded and even the reverse of that to be true. Progress which the republic has made during the last fifty years, since being liberated to develop liberties in religion, politics, and education, is phenomenal, even when compared with the United States period of evolution to her …
