EDITIONAL OFFICE OF
The Atlantic Mothly,
BOSTON.
August 3, 1900.
Dear Mr. Muir,
We have been looking eagerly for your paper--the last of the papers on the Yosemite-which your telegram of June 11th bade us to expect in a month. We shall be very glad, if we may, to have it for the October number, out-of-door papers being somewhat belated after that issue, and we can include it if it reaches us by the 18th or 20th of the present month. This, to be sure, will give you but little time after receiving our letter, but we are writing …

Dear Friends
If you have not heard from Martinez since I visited your brother John, this letter will be a surprise to you; but, as I was there on the 16th and 17th, it is probable that you have heard that I have been there. Right here let me say that I had a very pleasant visit - one that I shall ever remember with pleasure. I have passed through the town of Martinez a number of times on my trips to and from San Francisco & have …

My dear Mr. Muir,
I have seen quite a number of the members of the Harriman expedition and they tell me that great changes have taken place in the glaciers of Glacier Bay. Mr. [Sarmett?] is to send me his map of the end of the Muir glacier and Mr. Gilbert has sent me photographs of Hugh Miller & Reid Inlets. Did you succeed in deciding whether [Render?], Carroll and Geikie glaciers have changed since your visit in 1896? and did you notice changes in any other glaciers? I am now making up my annual report. …

read and corrected here, because it could hardly follow you to Alaska and I could not for a moment think of delaying its publication until you should come back and have time to read the proof and send it across the continent to me again. This is too good a thing to wait that long for. Besides, your copy is very plain indeed, and I think we shall make no mistakes.
Very heartily yours,

Oct. 28, 1898.
My dear Wanda,
I've been trying to tell you the course of my wanderings, since I left home, partly that I might thus help to keep track of myself, I've been going so fast and have made so many turns and doubles far and near in so many states north and south -- enjoyed so much and been bothered and fussed so much -- mixed day and night so much in cars, hotels, friends’ homes, steamboats, shanties, etc. it is no easy matter to keep anything like a clear record. I think I wrote last from Burlington, …

Dear Louie.
We arrived here by train an hour ago. 10 P.M.. and have just had supper. We came direct from Ashville and Biltmore, where we spent three days and had a grand time driving and walking over the Biltmore estate, royally entertained by the superintendents. The views, hilly and mountainous, are superb, but the forests are far inferior to those we passed through for 75 miles between Roan Mountain and Lenoir, and as for Vanderbilt's magnificent chateau and drives, I soon tired of them.
We are now in Grandma's country, Tennessee, and here for the …

NOVEMBER i, 1897.] THE FORESTER. 129 rease of forest area are on the contrary not a debt, but capital well invested. From such a policy you may expect not only the most perfect protection, but in the end a considerable and from year to year increasing income. In regard to the comparative amounts expended in Switzerland for corrective works and afforestation, it must be remarked that if the outlay has not hitherto accomplished its purpose the authorities liould not be held responsible. Assist- mce is forthcoming whenever it is sought, and wherever forestation is indicated the necessity of undertaking it …

My dear Mr Page.
I sent corrected proof of the forests yesterday. I am stupid with the Grippe & there may still be many errors in it. Please look it over & strike out everything you dont like.
As far the honorarium send what you usually do for similar articles.
I am trying to describe the parks, but if this Grippe does not clear off soon I'll go to the wilderness, perhaps before the article is finished. Therefore you must not depend on it.
Very truly Yours
