The Agony Of Lindsay Almond : Virginia's Transition From "Massive Resistance" To "Freedom Of Choice", John G. Mizell Jr Jan 1970

The Agony Of Lindsay Almond : Virginia's Transition From "Massive Resistance" To "Freedom Of Choice", John G. Mizell Jr

Honors Theses

An analysis of the events in Virginia resulting from the Brown desegregation decision of 1954 has justifiably been the subject of considerable study. The importance of this period of "massive resistance" to integrated schools should not be minimized because the South looked primarily to the Old Dominion for leadership. However, studies undertaken thus far have concentrated principally on the initial reaction of Virginia to the decision and the formation of the maze of obstructionist measures contrived to prevent integration, while largely neglecting the important aspect of the state's use of the "freedom of choice" policy in Virginia's schools.

The Causes Of The American Revolution As Seen By The New England Tories, Connie J. Mccann Jan 1970

The Causes Of The American Revolution As Seen By The New England Tories, Connie J. Mccann

Student Work

In order to understand the causes of the American Revolution through the eyes of a New England Tory, an examination of the conditions which made a Tory is necessary. A Tory, or a Loyalist, was a person who remained loyal to the British government during the American Revolution. More generally, a Tory usually desired the maintenance of the established government, especially during the time of a revolution. Thus, persons who remained loyal to George III, supported the British government, and later went into exile for their beliefs were Tories.

The Social Views Of Dwight L. Moody And Their Relation To The Workingman Of 1860-1900, Myron Raymond Chartier Aug 1969

The Social Views Of Dwight L. Moody And Their Relation To The Workingman Of 1860-1900, Myron Raymond Chartier

Fort Hays Studies Series

This evaluation is complicated for two basic reasons. The amount of subjectivity that enters into one's assessment always plagues any attempt on the part of the historian to be objective; however, it seems that religious phenomenon is even more difficult to evaluate honestly. This writer believes that he has no "axes to grind" in regard to Moody and the workingman. The record of history has been the primary interest.

Agriculture In The Fredericksburg Area, Harold J. Muddiman Jun 1969

Agriculture In The Fredericksburg Area, Harold J. Muddiman

Master's Theses

This paper is a study of agriculture and rural conditions in the Virginia counties of Caroline, Culpeper, Orange, Spotsylvania, and Stafford from 1800 to 1840. These counties are located in the north-central section of the state. The easternmost of the counties, Caroline, is located on the edge of the Tidewater section; Orange and Culpeper, in the Piedmont, extend to the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The land is generally flat in the east, becomes more rolling as it approaches the mountains. Soils range from sandy loams in Caroline County to the sandy and clay loams with underlying crystalline rock …

Conscription And The Constitution: The Original Understanding, Leon Friedman Jun 1969

Conscription And The Constitution: The Original Understanding, Leon Friedman

Michigan Law Review

The general words of the Constitution-famous phrases such as "due process," "freedom of speech," "interstate commerce," and "raise and support armies"-are not self-evident concepts. As Justice Frankfurter said, "The language of the [Constitution] is to be read not as barren words found in a dictionary but as symbols of historic experience illumined by the presuppositions of those who employed them. Not what words did Madison and Hamilton use, but what was it in their minds which they conveyed?" While the framers obviously could not have foreseen the discovery of electromagnetic radio waves or atomic energy, and had no "intent" concerning …
