The Impact Of The American Presence On Germans And German-American Grass Roots Relations In Germany, 1950-1960., Dewey Arthur Browder
The Impact Of The American Presence On Germans And German-American Grass Roots Relations In Germany, 1950-1960., Dewey Arthur Browder
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study is primarily concerned with the years 1950-1960, but the period 1945-1949 is also addressed, because many of the policies and institutions introduced to democratize Germany immediately after World War II were carried forward. The official position on both sides during the 1950s was that cooperation was of the essence. In the beginning, the Americans believed that the virtues of democracy could best be cultivated in the German consciousness if the Germans themselves implemented democratic programs under broad, philosophical guidelines, while simultaneously observing Americans and American ideas in practice. This study points out that the Germans accepted the guidelines …
Crime And Punishment In The Royal Navy: Discipline On The Leeward Islands Station, 1784-1812 (England)., John D. Byrn Jr
Crime And Punishment In The Royal Navy: Discipline On The Leeward Islands Station, 1784-1812 (England)., John D. Byrn Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation is based primarily on the manuscript sources pertaining to the Leeward Islands station between 1784 and 1812 found in the Public Record Office. Its thesis is quite simple: Discipline in the Royal Navy in the age of sail was maintained in much the same fashion that law and order was enforced in the localities of eighteenth-century England. In short, justice afloat was administered according to the principles and practices used in the system of criminal law ashore.
Dark Deeds In A Sunny Land: Or Blacks And Whites In North-West Australia, J. B. Gribble
Dark Deeds In A Sunny Land: Or Blacks And Whites In North-West Australia, J. B. Gribble
Research outputs pre 2011
The frontier of European settlement in the colony of Western Australia a hundred years ago stretched way beyond the south-western corner to the far north, and pastoralists were pushing steadily inland wherever the countryside offered promise of a living to be gained. Only the presence of Aborigines stood between them and the land they sought. On a frontier as far from the colonial capital as this where governmental representatives were few or absent, the newcomers were largely free to deal with the Aboriginal presence in their own way. Whether relations between the original inhabitants and the invaders were mostly peaceful …

Ethnic And Racial Conflict In Miami Since The Cuban Influx, 1960-1985 (Florida), Patrick James O'Hare
Ethnic And Racial Conflict In Miami Since The Cuban Influx, 1960-1985 (Florida), Patrick James O'Hare
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1980 - 1989
Miami experienced considerable ethnic and racial tension after the Cuban influx began in 1960. Large numbers of Cuban, and later Haitian immigrants altered the social complexion of the city. During this period of rapid change, the Cuban, Anglo and black communities attempted to improve their standard of living. Economic and political competition created hostility among the ethnic groups. In the twenty-five year period ending in 1985, the groups perceived that the gains of one came at the expense of the others. This attitude spawned ethnic and racial tension that prevented cooperation and adversely affected the social harmony within the city …
Law And The Experience Of Politics In Late Eighteenth-Century North Carolina: North Carolina Considers The Constitution, Walter F. Pratt
Law And The Experience Of Politics In Late Eighteenth-Century North Carolina: North Carolina Considers The Constitution, Walter F. Pratt
Journal Articles
In 1788, delegates assembled in North Carolina to decide whether to ratify the Constitution. A debate erupted between Federalists and Anti-federalists regarding each Article of the then-drafted Constitution. This Article analyzes the debate, and proposes that the key difference was the function of the role of the law.

David Baltimore Oral History, David Baltimore
David Baltimore Oral History, David Baltimore
Oral History Collection
Susan Mehrtens' Note:
We met in Dr. Baltimore's office at the Whitehead Institute, and our meeting was short (less than 45 minutes) but direct and to the point: Baltimore credits The Jackson Laboratory for setting him on his course as a biologist, but beyond that, he sees Jax as a dated, low-key place. One speaking engagement at Jax that left him astonished to see an empty parking lot at 5PM made an indelible impression on him and he echoes the attitudes of others outside Jax--like Law and Sprott--that Jax is not a dynamic, hotshot institution on the cutting edge of …

Donald Bailey Oral History, Donald Bailey

Susan Metrhens' Note:
Regarded by many of his peers at Jax as one of the most intuitive, prescient and creative scientists at the Lab, Bailey was a very reflective narrator. While he provides one anecdote of c.c. Little1s sartorial habits, this tape is largely devoid of anecdotal material, and is more a reminiscence by a scientist who was at Jax in the early '50's, who left and returned in 1967. I tried, through a variety of questions, to probe the synergy between Bailey and the Lab, the degree to which his prescience and creativity might be due to the freedom …

Saint Vincent's College And Theological Education, John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D.
Saint Vincent's College And Theological Education, John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D.
Vincentian Studies
Saint Vincent’s College in Cape Girardeau, Mississippi opened in 1838 as a boys’ school and was incorporated as a college in 1843, providing mainly secular secondary education. It became a common seminary for several dioceses in 1860. During the Civil War, skirmishes and the Battle of Cape Girardeau came near it, and the loyalties of its faculty and students were divided. Nonetheless, classes continued throughout the war. Afterward, the college faced anti-Catholic bigotry and bankruptcy, and returned to accepting secular students for various reasons. It had many notable alumni and faculty, including bishops and Vincentian provincials respectively. It resumed its …
Thomas Roderick Oral History, Thomas Roderick
Thomas Roderick Oral History, Thomas Roderick
Oral History Collection
Susan Metrhens' Note:
Roderick has been a scientist at Jax for thirty years, working in no other place. He was hired just as Earl Green replaced C.C. Little and Roderick worked with and for Green for some dozen years before moving into his own lab, on his own grants. Roderick is both perceptive and analytical and this tape is valuable for his willingness to reflect on trends and personalities. He also has a philosopher's willingness to consider the values that drive the lab. Roderick was forthcoming with anecdotes, including a most telling one of Rich Prehn showing the courage of …

Elizabeth "Tibby" Russell Oral History, Elizabeth Russell
Oral History Collection
Susan Mehrtens' Note:
This three-way interview, between Tibby, Judith Swazey and me, took place in Tibby's home. In the days before this interview, I had interviewed many Jax personnel whose reminiscences had "primed" me for this meeting with one of the most colorful, distinctive and beloved old-time Jax scientists. Tibby has had a remarkable impact on Jax, both in terms of substantial science and also in a human, personal way, as a friend, mentor and colleague to many of the summer students, later to be lab scientists and administrators. Where she could have spoken at length of C.C. Little and …
Law, Legalism, And Community Before The American Revolution, Bruce H. Mann
Law, Legalism, And Community Before The American Revolution, Bruce H. Mann
Michigan Law Review
The connections between law and community are difficult to identify, let alone explain. It may be best to begin by seeing how law and the ways people used it changed, and then attempt to relate those changes to the surrounding economy and society. One must, of course, be wary of finding what one looks for. Nonetheless, as with objects against a dark background, it is sometimes easier to see things when they move than when they remain still. To illustrate the interactive nature of legal change and community, I will draw on examples from Connecticut before the Revolution - not …
American Studies: Civil War, The Correlation Of Literature And History Studies In High School, Arlene Kellogg
American Studies: Civil War, The Correlation Of Literature And History Studies In High School, Arlene Kellogg
Theses
Courses in history can be nothing but memorizing facts, and courses in literature can be writing without roots . The author proposes a correlated curriculum for high school American literature and history, specifically in the Civil War time frame to change this situation.
The purpose of this curriculum, "American Studies: Civil War," is to make the history of our country live for the student, giving him/her a feeling for the mood of the times and motivating him/her to become politically active as a young citizen.
To validate the proposal, the author has interviewed experts in the fields of literature, history …
