The Courier
This article describes how certain administrative documents written in Venice during the Holy Roman Empire, dubbed relazioni, had a profound effect on the famous historian Leopold von Ranke, and the development of his extremely objective historiography. Von Ranke collected many of these relazioni, and they can be found in the Ranke Library at Syracuse University.

The Legend Of Jane Renfro, Stafford Poole C.M.
The Legend Of Jane Renfro, Stafford Poole C.M.
Vincentian Studies
There is a story that a person enslaved by Saint Vincent’s College in Missouri, Jane Renfro, was to be “sold down the river.” She was supposedly freed by a papal decree that no Catholic institution could sell enslaved persons. There was no such papal decision. Starting in 1840, Saint Vincent’s sold all its enslaved persons locally to comply with provincial John Timon’s policy of phasing out enslavement. Renfro was probably sold to or placed with a nearby family named Burns.

Town And Province In Revolutionary New Hampshire: A Stable Political Culture Confronts Change, 1765--1776, Marilyn Mulzer Robbert
Doctoral Dissertations
The study analyzes the relationship of the towns to the provincial government between 1765 and 1776 to understand the underlying process of the coming of the Revolution in New Hampshire. The focus is on the towns, and the main sources are unpublished town records.
For one part of the study, I developed a system to identify legislative leaders (a modification of Jack Greene's method), used Gini scores to compare the General Assemblies with the Provincial Congresses and the 1776 House of Representatives, and constructed a composite biography for the 296 men who served during the period.

Constructing A Constitution: 'Orginal Intention' In The Slave Cases, James Boyd White
Constructing A Constitution: 'Orginal Intention' In The Slave Cases, James Boyd White
Other Publications
The question how our Constitution is to be interpreted is a living one for us today, both in the scholarly and in the political domains. Professors argue about "interpretivism" and "originalism" in law journals, they study hermeneutics and deconstruction to determine whether or not interpretation is possible at all, and if so on what premises, and they struggle to create theories that will tell us both what we do in fact and what we ought to do. Politicians and public figures (including Attorney General Edwin Meese) talk in the newspapers and elsewhere about the authority of the "original intention of …
