Vincentian Missions Among Native Americans, John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D.
Vincentian Missions Among Native Americans, John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D.
Vincentian Studies
The founders of the American Vincentians, Felix De Andreis and Joseph Rosati, considered the conversion of the Native Americans one of the main purposes of the American mission, although this was not an official objective. Efforts to this end were relatively few due to a lack of personnel and resources, and the more urgent need to serve American Catholics. In 1824, while ministering to Catholics in the Arkansas Territory, John Mary Odin and John Timon said mass among the Kappas-on-Arkansas (Quapaw). In 1837, other Vincentians went to the Osages in what is now Oklahoma. These two ventures were considered major …

Student Work
An article by Gregory R. Zieren was brought to my attention as I was completing this study. I Dealing with recently published works on the packing industry, it critiques books that have been my constant companions over the last two years. Zieren writes, "Despite the local focus [Chicago], none of the works is parochial in its scholarly concerns, and all of them broaden our understanding of the urban and social history of one the nation's quintessential working-class districts." Chicago was the environment for the development of the modern industry and, for almost a century, was the world's leading packing center. …
Stories Of Origin And Constitutional Possibilities, Milner S. Ball
Stories Of Origin And Constitutional Possibilities, Milner S. Ball
Michigan Law Review
Robert Cover once observed how "[n]o set of legal institutions or prescriptions exists apart from the narratives that locate it and give it meaning. For every constitution there is an epic, for each decalogue a scripture." Stories of origin locate law, invest it with legitimacy, and so lend it stability. As Cover went on to note, however, the narratives that legitimate a legal order also retain revolutionary force, for a return to the originating acts recounted in the narratives is always possible. A polity begun in revolution remains subject to revolution.
There is an American story of origins. It is …

Fluctuation History Of Great Salt Lake, Utah, During The Last 13,000 Years, United States, National Aeronautics And Space Administration
Water
Great Salt Lake level fluctuations from 13,000 yr B.P. to the present were interpreted by examination of shoreline geomorphic features, shoreline deposits, archeologic sites, isotopic data, and palynologic data.
After the conclusion of the Bonneville paleolake cycle, between 13,000 and 12,000 yr B.P. the lake regressed to levels low enough to deposit a littoral oxidized red bed stratum and a pelagic Glauber's salt layer. A late Pleistocene lake cycle occurred between 12,000 and 10,000 yr B.P. depositing several beaches, the highest reaching an altitude of about 4250 ft (1295.3 m). The lake regressed after 10,000 yr B.P., only to rise …

Preface (Special Issue, The Greeks Institute), Judith Davis Miller
Sacred Heart University Review
The essays in this selection explore the roots of classicism in 5th century B.C. Greece. The articles are based on The Greeks Institute, a series of lectures presented to secondary school teachers in the Bridgeport Public Schools during the spring of 1989. Co-sponsored by the Connecticut Humanities Council, Sacred Heart University, and the Bridgeport Public Schools, the purpose of the institute has been to provide teachers with an interdisciplinary exploration of classical Greece for the purposes of professional enrichment and curriculum development. The institute will culminate with teachers and their students attending The Greeks, a lecture/performance presented by the Humanities …
