Three Decades Of Supreme Court Copyright Decisions: A Peek Behind The Scenes, Jonathan Band Aug 2026

Three Decades Of Supreme Court Copyright Decisions: A Peek Behind The Scenes, Jonathan Band

Joint PIJIP/TLS Research Paper Series

This article discusses the revelations in the case files of eight Supreme Court Justices concerning eighteen copyright-related decisions issued by the Court between 1973 and 2005. The papers show the Court as a profoundly human institution, with the Justices often struggling to craft opinions that could gain the support of a majority. The Justices clearly cared about the copyright merits, but they were also willing to compromise to achieve a certain result. In several cases, the final opinion was anything but inevitable. This was particularly so with Sony Corporation of America v. Universal City Studios, 464 U.S. 417 (1984), …

A Mixed-Methods Study Of Patient And Caregiver Experiences With Home Health Occupational Therapy, Peyton A. Mendias, Cassandra Nelson, Gwen Morris

Summer 2026 OTD Capstone Symposium

Home health occupational therapy (HHOT) promotes independence and safety within the home, yet patients and caregivers often experience challenges implementing therapy recommendations after discharge. This mixed-methods study explored the lived experiences of patients and caregivers who participated in HHOT to identify barriers and facilitators to implementing occupational therapy recommendations and inform the development of a caregiver education toolkit. Adults who received HHOT within the previous six months and informal caregivers completed an online survey, with a subset participating in semi-structured interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and qualitative interview data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. Findings emphasized …

Legitimacy, Legality, And Canadian Climate Laws, Adebayo Majekolagbe Aug 2026

Legitimacy, Legality, And Canadian Climate Laws, Adebayo Majekolagbe

Dalhousie Law Journal

In 2021, the Supreme Court of Canada, in the References re Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act, confirmed that global climate change is real, human activities are the main cause, and climate impacts will be especially severe and devastating in Canada. Against this backdrop, the Court upheld the federal government's authority to set a nationwide minimum standard for the stringency of greenhouse gas pricing. Years after the Court endorsed the GGPPA, the legislation and its carbon pricing policy have struggled to gain legitimacy, meaning the acceptance and support of Canadians. In 2025, the carbon charge component of the law was suspended, …

Temporal Legitimacy And Civilizational Logic: A Sociological Perspective On The Foundational Principles Of Chinese Civilization, Yuk Man Cheung Aug 2026

Temporal Legitimacy And Civilizational Logic: A Sociological Perspective On The Foundational Principles Of Chinese Civilization, Yuk Man Cheung

Comparative Civilizations Review

This article departs from the recent social-scientific analytical framework for comparative civilizations proposed by the sociologist Liah Greenfeld (2024a, 2024b, 2025) and puts forward several basic conjectures regarding the analysis of the characteristics of Chinese civilization, with the aim of assisting our understanding, execution, and integration of empirical studies. Precisely because these are conjectures, they differ from conventional academic research–especially the case-study-oriented research style dominant in contemporary Anglophone academia. Accordingly, this article can only be regarded as an attempt that, starting from sociological theory, offers preliminary conjectures and tentatively constructs a theoretical framework within which specialists from different fields may …

The Concept Of A ‘State-Civilization’ In Russia: The Contest For National Dignity In The Form Of A Civilizational Analysis, Ivan Nokhrin Aug 2026

The Concept Of A ‘State-Civilization’ In Russia: The Contest For National Dignity In The Form Of A Civilizational Analysis, Ivan Nokhrin

Comparative Civilizations Review

This article examines the contemporary Russian concept of the “state-civilization” as articulated in official discourse, educational materials, and nationalist thought. It argues that the notion of Russian civilization functions primarily as a symbol of national dignity and exceptionalism rather than an analytically coherent concept. Through analyzing narratives surrounding traditional values, state-centrism, family, and patriotism, the study demonstrates that these themes largely reproduce longstanding patterns of Russian nationalism and its opposition to the West. Drawing on Greenfeld’s theory of civilization, the article contends that Russia is best understood as part of the broader monotheistic civilization rather than a distinct civilization of …

The Family As A Mechanism Of Civilizational Continuity: Absorption, Localization, And Rejection Of Modern Values In The Indic Case, Monika Monika Aug 2026

The Family As A Mechanism Of Civilizational Continuity: Absorption, Localization, And Rejection Of Modern Values In The Indic Case, Monika Monika

Comparative Civilizations Review

Contrary to the common view that the family socializes the individual into a given culture, this paper insists that the family performs a far more profound, indeed, a constitutive function. It is not simply the first school of civilizational values; it is the primary institutional site through which a civilization reproduces its symbolic order and, in so doing, acts as the gatekeeper of civilizational continuity and change. It is here that a civilization’s foundational principles are first internalized; and it is here, too, that modern values, or new norms thrust upon it by encounters with alien civilizations ⎯ are first …

5-hydroxytryptamine type 3 (5-HT3) receptor antagonists are used to treat nausea and vomiting and in the prevention of chemotherapy-induced, radiation-induced, and postoperative nausea and vomiting. Most of the 5-HT3 receptor antagonists (i.e., ondansetron, tropisetron, dolasetron, palonosetron, and ramosetron) are metabolized by CYP2D6, but the extent of CYP2D6 involvement varies. CYP2D6 genetic variation can influence the metabolism of these medications, particularly ondansetron and tropisetron, thereby affecting drug efficacy. This guideline is an update to the 2016 Clinical Pharmacogenetics Implementation Consortium (CPIC) guideline for CYP2D6 genotype and use of ondansetron and tropisetron and includes updated information on CYP2D6 genetic …

Young adults with intellectual disability (ID) are an underserved population with a high prevalence of obesity, obesity-related health conditions, and reduced ability to complete instrumental and basic activities of daily living (I/ADLs). After leaving the structured environment of public school, many young adults with ID spend more time at home or in day programs, begin living more independently, or enter the workforce. These transitions may increase reliance on fast or processed foods and reduce opportunities for physical activity, contributing to accelerated weight gain. Previous research has demonstrated clinically meaningful short- and long-term weight loss (18-24 months) in adults with mild-to-moderate …

INTRODUCTION: We evaluated whether Trisomy 21 (T21) affected bowel management use, ability to toilet train for stool, and rates of Hirschsprung-Associated Enterocolitis (HAEC) in children with Hirschsprung disease (HD). We hypothesized that T21 would be associated with increased rates of HAEC, bowel management program (BMP) use, and delayed toilet training for stool.

METHODS: Children with HD in the Pediatric Colorectal and Pelvic Learning Consortium (PCPLC) database who underwent primary pull-through were included and stratified by T21 status: HD only versus HD + T21. Children requiring a redo pull-through, initially managed with a stoma, or those who had inadequate follow-up were …

Ramsey Chains In Graphs, Ritabrato Chatterjee Aug 2026

Ramsey Chains In Graphs, Ritabrato Chatterjee

Dissertations

The research in this work deals with decomposition of graphs and Ramsey theory, two popular areas of research in graph theory due to numerous fascinating problems and the sheer mathematical beauty of the subjects. A decomposition {G1, G2, ..., Gk} of a graph G into subgraphs of G is ascending if the subgraph Gi is isomorphic to a proper subgraph of Gi+1 for i = 1, 2, ..., k − 1. The well-known and long-standing of Ascending Subgraph Decomposition Conjecture states that every graph has an ascending subgraph …

Masculinity, Psychological Flexibility, And Machismo: An Initial Examination Of Relationships To Interpersonal Violence, Geraldine Granados Todd Aug 2026

Masculinity, Psychological Flexibility, And Machismo: An Initial Examination Of Relationships To Interpersonal Violence, Geraldine Granados Todd

Dissertations

Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a grave problem in many areas of the world. Latin American countries have some of the highest rates of IPV in the world. One factor potentially impacting these rates has been hypothesized to be traditional machismo. Machismo is a complex construct that has proven difficult to define. A substantial challenge lies in distinguishing the characteristics that are unique to machismo from broader masculine gender role norms. Additionally, machismo seems to have a more “positive” side to it, encompassing loyalty to family, honor, and responsibility. This has been coined caballerismo. Studies looking at the impact of …

Evalutating Self-Instructional Training Materials To Teach Caregiver Implementation Of A Reading Program, Ky'aria Moses Aug 2026

Evalutating Self-Instructional Training Materials To Teach Caregiver Implementation Of A Reading Program, Ky'aria Moses

Dissertations

Approximately 69% of fourth grade students and 70% of eighth grade students performed below the proficient level on the 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) reading assessment, highlighting ongoing gaps in early literacy skills (NAEP, 2024). Caregiver implementation of instructional reading strategies can positively impact children’s literacy development; however, training is often required to ensure fidelity. Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons (TYC), is an evidence-based Direct Instruction reading program designed for caregiver implementation, yet its written self-instructional Practice Guide may be insufficient for developing fluent instructional delivery. Research suggests that programmed instructional formats incorporating active …

“Dynt Of Dede:” Reading The Medieval Combat Scene Through The Helmet-Cleave Motif, Andrew Sherwood Thomas Aug 2026

“Dynt Of Dede:” Reading The Medieval Combat Scene Through The Helmet-Cleave Motif, Andrew Sherwood Thomas

Dissertations

This research explores the continuity of chivalric combat descriptions throughout medieval literature. By tracing the history, development, and distribution of the helmet-cleave motif, this study is able to examine combat scenes spanning a wide reach of time, genera, and language. The purpose of this work is to suggest a reading methodology for the chivalric combat scene that appropriately situates it in its cross-textual context and so reveals the nuance of its expression and the value in its study.

Despite the volume of surviving combat descriptions in medieval literature, they remain underrepresented in the scholarship due to their apparent repetitious and …

Severity-Informed Analysis Of Staff-Worn Personal Protective Equipment Use In An Applied Behavior Analysis Clinical Setting, Trey Ximenez Aug 2026

Severity-Informed Analysis Of Staff-Worn Personal Protective Equipment Use In An Applied Behavior Analysis Clinical Setting, Trey Ximenez

Dissertations

Staff who provide care for individuals with autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability experience high workplace injury rates, particularly in applied behavior analysis settings (Hardesty 2020; Hardesty et al., 2025; Romani et al., 2020). Despite these elevated risks, organizations lack evidence-based criteria for determining what protection to recommend to staff based on documented injury outcomes (Irwin Helvey et al. 2024). This study examined how staff injury characteristics are associated with staff-worn personal protective equipment (PPE) use in an inpatient neurobehavioral unit. A retrospective analysis of 1,998 staff injury incidents from 105 patients (2020-2024) tested whether injury severity, injury type relevance, …

Success Of New Ideas In Online Platforms: An Idea Network Perspective, Yimei Zhou, Qian Tang, Vincent Z.W. Mack Mack, Shao Yi Liaw Aug 2026

Success Of New Ideas In Online Platforms: An Idea Network Perspective, Yimei Zhou, Qian Tang, Vincent Z.W. Mack Mack, Shao Yi Liaw

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

On online platforms, new ideas often emerge by recombining existing ones within idea networks. Unlike traditional knowledge networks, idea networks represent curated, meaning-based associations among ideas, offering a distinct lens on recombination. Drawing upon a hypergraph perspective, we investigate how new idea success depends on their structural and content attributes, and how collaborative participation shapes these attributes. Using data from an ideation platform, we find that both structural embeddedness and bridging benefit new idea success. Content diversity has no direct effect, but it amplifies the benefits of bridging while constraining those of embeddedness. Both crowd contributions and ideator expertise strengthen …

Woven Into One, Elise Marie Hatch Aug 2026

Woven Into One, Elise Marie Hatch

AWE (A Woman’s Experience)

A recent late-night walk to the library was joyfully interrupted by a young child. Her unique perspective framed by the diminished height and wholesome innocence of a seven-year-old, this child was eager to share what she, from her vantage point, saw, discovered, and valued. “Mom!” she yelled with brilliant curiosity, “Look at the lights!” Guided by her pointing hand, I too turned around. I saw my home city—where I wake and work and study every day—transformed, through the curiosity of a child, into a symbolic landscape of dappled lights and abstracted forms.
