Cloth Seals At Iroquois Sites, Jan M. Baart
Cloth Seals At Iroquois Sites, Jan M. Baart
Northeast Historical Archaeology
Textiles represent a very significant component of the Dutch goods that were exported to New Netherland for trade with the Iroquois Indians. These textiles varied greatly in quality. These differences were indicated on lead cloth seals that were affixed to the cloths. The lead cloth seals that are excavated at Iroquois sites provide useful information about the origins and quality of the traded cloth; They also .are a source of information about Dutch textile manufacture in the 17th century, a period during which the cloth industry was the most important urban industry in the Netherlands. Amsterdam was the staple market …
The Castello Plan-Evidence Of Horticulture In New Netherland Or Cartographer's Whimsy?, Richard Schaefer, Meta Fayden Janowitz
The Castello Plan-Evidence Of Horticulture In New Netherland Or Cartographer's Whimsy?, Richard Schaefer, Meta Fayden Janowitz
Northeast Historical Archaeology
Few descriptions or depictions of horticulture in New Netherland have come down to us, although 17th-century observers' accounts of gardens and orchards present lengthy lists of fruits, vegetables, 'and fiowers transplanted from Europe, as well as those discovered in North America. Perhaps the most evocative source is the mid-century Castello Plan, a view of the settlement af New Amsterdam, which shows elaborate · parterres on most of the unoccupied lots. Are the gardens of the Castello Plan fact, or simply cartographer's whimsy? Based on data from both the Netherlands and New Netherland-including artists~ depiction~, travelers' accounts, and gardening texts-that illustrate …

The Van Lidth De Jeude Family And The Waste From Their Privy: Material Culture Of A Wealthy Family In 18th-Century Tiel, The Netherlands, Michiel H. Bartels
Northeast Historical Archaeology
This study uses the comprehensive material culture of the 18th-century privy of the regent family Van Lidth de Jeude in Tiel (the Netherlands). The analysis takes advantage of the secondary sources that are common in the Netherlands to evaluate the privy contents. The archaeological finds are interpreted with the aid of historical documents, contemporary literature and probate inventories, and the content of the privy is set against the background of an 18th-century provincial town in the heart of the Netherlands. This combined study reveals much surprising information about the daily and private lives, personal history, gender aspects and socioeconomic status …

Wampum Diplomacy: The Historical And Archaeological Evidence For Wampum At Fort Niagara, Elizabeth S. Peña
Wampum Diplomacy: The Historical And Archaeological Evidence For Wampum At Fort Niagara, Elizabeth S. Peña
Northeast Historical Archaeology
The 18th-century French and British post at Fort Niagara was the site of numerous conferences and meetings in which wampum beads were exchanged between European powers and Native Americans. Considering the distance from shell sources and wampum production sites, this article explores the presence of wampum at Fort Niagara through an examination of the archaeological and documentary evidence. It is suggested that, via several intermediaries, the Fort Niagara wampum beads originated in Albany, an 18th-century hub of wampum production.

Theses
This paper focuses on the concepts that inform my thesis work for the Master of Fine Arts in Fine Arts Studio from Rochester Institute of Technology. I have always been intrigued by circumstances such as war and oppression. I have also wondered about the opposite, moments of peace and serenity. Inevitably, I have allowed these dualistic thoughts to govern my artwork, abstractly through form and underlying narratives. In my thesis, I investigate concepts such as identity, history, memory, and how they play a role in my artwork. I see history as a tool for examining identity, while memory serves as …

Arab Women, Social Media, And The Arab Spring: Applying The Framework Of Digital Reflexivity To Analyze Gender And Online Activism, Victoria A. Newsom, Lara Lengel
Journal of International Women's Studies
This essay analyzes the engagement of Arab feminist activisms online, most notably during the citizen revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt, and, specifically, women’s use of online social networking to aid social change. Building on research examining how Arab activists and activist organizations, including feminist organizations, mobilize, produce knowledge, and develop and share resources online and, in particular, drawing from research on Arab activisms and social media this study aims to understand how online activist discourses function, both locally and globally. To do so, we utilize a schema of information production and consumption devised to analyze activist engagement and citizen journalism, …

The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology
While safely ensconced on an American campus, it is easy to forget that people in different parts of the world may see things differently. My encounter with Romanian high school students was a reminder of this. Teenagers from around the world are apt to understand history through a veil of patriotism and ignorance. This need not be based on malice and can be addressed with honest and respectful communications.

A Cold War Episode: Detente And Us Relations With Pakistan During The 1971 South Asia Crisis, Ralph A. Becker
A Cold War Episode: Detente And Us Relations With Pakistan During The 1971 South Asia Crisis, Ralph A. Becker
Master's Theses
The Cold War defined a state of conflict between the U.S., China, and the Soviet Union during the nuclear age that followed World War II. During the Cold War the United States practiced a foreign policy that was episodic in nature as the great nations recruited the developing countries of the Third World to carry on their ideological struggles. This policy meant that the U.S. would aggressively intervene during periods of war in developing countries in order to prevent the spread of communism. Yet, after the episode ended, the U.S. would quickly vacate the region and move on to other …

Dissertations
In the United States, regional sports networks broadcast games of home teams to audiences in specific communities, or geographical areas. Ownership of regional sports network by sports teams presents a unique type of vertical integration. Regional sports networks use distinctive programming to connect to local sports culture. This dissertation explores the historical significance of New England Sports Network (NESN), a team created, owned and operated regional sports network, which broadcasts Boston Red Sox baseball games and Boston Bruins hockey games throughout the New England region. Using elements of cultural studies, specifically political economy and textual analysis, this dissertation examines the …
