Using Science To Answer Questions From Latter-Day Saint History, Ugo A. Perego
Using Science To Answer Questions From Latter-Day Saint History, Ugo A. Perego
BYU Studies
DNA testing has been employed to study the ancestry and posterity of Joseph Smith Jr., founder of the Mormon movement. Thanks to information found on the paternally inherited Y chromosome, for example, researchers have been able to establish a likely Irish origin for the Smith line. Y chromosome testing has also been helpful in resolving a number of paternity cases involving men who were allegedly sons of Joseph through polygamous unions. To date, all of the tests for these candidates have borne negative results.

The Polish Question At Yalta, 1945: Public Opinion On The Polish Agreements, Christopher Maxim
History & Classics Undergraduate Theses
Historians have largely agreed that the relationship among Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin began to deteriorate as World War II was coming to an end, but largely disagree as to why this is so. Many historians acknowledge the fact that negotiations on Poland were a serious issue at the Yalta Conference and contributed to the downfall of the alliance but fall short of labeling it as the main factor. Historians such as Jon Meacham and Vladislav Zubok tend to tell a broader timeline of the alliance and examine the uncertainty of Poland as a part of that story, but do not …

Women In Roman Republican Literature: The Use Of Mulier In Sallust And Plautus, Emily Conley
History & Classics Undergraduate Theses
Language and word choice are critical tools that allow an author to communicate how they want the audience to receive and think about a character or situation. Authors often will use colloquialisms or euphemisms to imply something about the characters that either cannot be said or is not appropriate to say. This is especially true of words used for women. There are several Latin words meaning ‘woman’ or ‘female’. In this thesis, I focus on the most common three: mulier, femina and puella. Because these terms can implicitly comment upon the social positions of characters, their fundamental meanings are …
Moses Flavius Vespasianus: Investigating Mosaic Themes In The Bellum Iudaicum Of Josephus In The Context Of The Emperor Vespasian, Sean Tobin
History & Classics Undergraduate Theses
According to the autobiographical work that he wrote, Titus Flavius Josephus, born Yosef ben Matityahu, was born in the year 37, the same year Caligula ascended to the imperial throne in Rome. He was born in the Roman province of Judaea to a priestly, aristocratic family and raised in Jerusalem in the privilege and wealth associated with such a family. Following the war between the Romans and the Jews in 66 and his capture by the Romans at the siege of Jotapata, he became a prisoner of the future emperor, Vespasian, later winning his favor by prophesying his rise to …

Wings Of Their Dreams: Purdue In Flight, Second Edition, John Norberg
Purdue University Press Book Previews
Throughout 100-plus years of flight, Purdue University has propelled unique contributions from pioneer educators, aviators, and engineers who flew balloons into the stratosphere, barnstormed the countryside, helped break the sound barrier, and left footprints in lunar soil. Wings of Their Dreams follows the flight plans and footsteps of aviation's pioneers and trailblazers across the twentieth century, a path from Kitty Hawk to the Sea of Tranquility and beyond. The book reminds readers that the first and last men to land on the moon first trekked across the West Lafayette, Indiana, campus on their journeys into the heavens and history. This …

Exploring Ways To Bring Culturally Relevant Pedagogy Into Rehabilitative Programs, Reginold P. Daniels
Doctoral Dissertations
The present study analyzes the effectiveness of a culturally relevant prison rehabilitation program carried out with 41 inmates at a California jail. The aspect of prison rehabilitation has not received enough attention by researchers previously. In this case, the author conducted an in-depth quantitative analysis on a survey with participants that he was teaching. Regression analysis was used to explore the data. The results of the regression indicated that the culturally-relevant instructor significantly enhanced violence prevention (r (37) = .410, p < 0.05). Furthermore, the study also found that cultural relevance significantly impacted communication and relationship skills (r (37) = .423, p < 0.05).

Marker Of Difference: Historical Construction Of Stigmatization Toward Zainichi Koreans, Hyomin Lee
Marker Of Difference: Historical Construction Of Stigmatization Toward Zainichi Koreans, Hyomin Lee
Scholarly Undergraduate Research Journal at Clark (SURJ)
Abstract
This paper explores the historical construction of stigmatization toward Zainichi Koreans in Japan, as well as the consequences of such stigmatization. Zainichi Koreans are a minority group of ethnic Koreans living in Japan as special permanent residents, a unique identity formed as a result of the history of Japanese war imperialism and post-war nationalism. Zainichi Koreans have been residing in Japan for many generations now, and are no different from Japanese except for their ethnicity, or lack of Japanese blood. The homogeneity of Japan that boasts of pure Japanese blood is constantly conflicted by the long-term presence of Zainichi …
