Dear Louie no more [illegible]s Have managed to see more today. I will send you a page or two of my M.S. instead which no doubt you will like better though some would call it dull & [illegible] - I wrote it last night between 10 & 11 oclock after finishing my letter to you. By the way this makes five letters to you such as they are & not a line from you or even Wanda. Tell [Fran?] to sweep the roofs every day to prevent accumulations of …

flowers as she desired. Sarah Young came this morning to thank me, and she talked with so much tender feeling about her mother. She is a gentle lovely girl I think Yesterday good old Parson Yager came to see us: the one who preached at my little brother's funeral 31 years ago. How vividly that sorrowful time was brought back to our minds. Oh the weary pioneer days that were talked of! John Muir: A Reading Bibliography by Kimes (Muir articles 1866-1986)

JUNE 29, 1889. aa—a——— FIRSTS OF THE SIERRA, The Destruction that is Being Wrought in the Mountains. John Muir's Protest against the Wantonness of the Sheep-Herder and Lumberman- Value of the Forests. The forests growing on the western slope of the Sierra are by far the most destructible of the natural wealth of California, but they are being rapidly and ruthlessly destroyed, as if, like a larger kind of pernicious weeds, every available means at the command of a far-seeing, enterprising people should be set in motion to eradicate them. Our gold and silver stored in the rocks may all …

[letterhead]

August 7th, 1888

Dear Louie.

We returned to Seattle last evening after spending five days on the upper waters of the Snoqualmie. The rides & walks through the grand primeval woods were very interesting & exciting & telling, & the roughness & wetness of snags bogs & constant rain were as nothing to the soul though something to bones & flesh. Most of that however is rested away leaving only the living immortal beauty in vivid relief. Tomorrow morning at 4.45 we start for Mt Ranier by way of Yelm Prairie. Where we will procure pack animals. There …
