I think that Sargents plan for the forests turning over the management to the military department will solve the difficulties hitherto encountered & I therefore endorse it with all my heart. The Sierra Club directors are of the same opinion & will endorse it with enthusiasm you will soon hear from the club.
As time flies your unquenchable zeal in all good works fans my admiration hotter & hotter. & I am ever of course

faithfully yours John Muir

John Muir Correspondence (PDFs)

[letterhead]

October 20th / 94.

My dear friend Muir

Your letter of the 14th Sept. has been forwarded to me here, having been unable to complete the arrangements for the proposed business trip to the States. The letter afforded me the greatest pleasure & satisfaction. I thought perhaps you might have long since forgotten me. My memory often fails me in matters not fixed by some sticking event, but I never lost sight, in the minds eye, of my old schoolfellow Muir. In fact I have mentioned you & the woollen works to friends hundreds of times--to my family in particular. …

March 14th 1894

Dear friend Mr. Muir,

Some months ago when I had the pleasure of meeting you at Mrs. John Vance Cheney’s house I heard you make a most eloquent defense of nearly all Nature’s lower creations even including the noxious rattle snake. That speech of yours gives me the courage to write to you asking your help to save the meadow larks. The markets are full of the poor plucked bodies of those beautiful songsters. (At most of the French restaurants, at present, a dish

THB' TRAVELS ft. KING'S RIVER YOSEMITE. JOHN MUIR. OWN in the heart of the High Sierra there is a magnificent rival . to the Yosemite in the Big King's River Canyon, or King's River Yosemite. The general characters as to the floor and walls, vegetation and rock - sculpture, are the same in both; but the King's Valley, although somewhat narrower, is longer, deeper, and lies imbedded in grander mountains. It is situated on the south fork of King's River, above noble forests of Sequoia and sugar- pine, and beneath the shadows of the highest mountains in the range. It …

Dear Sir:

I shall take the liberty of introducing myself and of addressing you directly as the literary adviser of D. Appleton & Co I have been a reader of your articles in the Century and elsewhere, and I also happen to have a more extensive knowledge of the west, derived from personal observation, than is the case perhaps with most eastern people. A RIVAL OF THE YOSEMITE.1 THE CANON OF THE SOUTH FORK OF KING'S RIVER, CALIFORNIA. BY TOHN MUIR. ITS GENERAL CHARACTER. N the vast Sierra wilderness far to the southward of the famous Yosemite Valley, there is a yet grander valley of the same kind. It is situated on the south fork of King's River, above the most extensive groves and forests of the giant sequoia, and beneath the shadows of the highest mountains in the range, where the canons are deepest and the snow-laden peaks are crowded most closely together. It is called the Big King's River Canon, or …

FEATURES OF THE PROPOSE NATIONAL PARK. OSEMITE HE upper Tuolumne Valley is the widest, smoothest, most serenely spacious, and in every way the most delightful summer pleasure park in all the high Sierra. And since it is connected with Yosemite by two good trails, and with the levels of civilization by a broad, well- graded carriage-road that passes between Yosemite and Mount Hoffman, it is also the most accessible. It lies in the heart of the high Sierra at a height of from 8500 to 9000 feet above the level of the sea, at a distance of less than ten …
