The Influence Of Rivers On The History Of Indiana, Ralph L. Bailey Jul 1960

The Influence Of Rivers On The History Of Indiana, Ralph L. Bailey

Graduate Thesis Collection

This study deals with the influence of rivers on the history of Indiana. It is difficult for us to visualize that some of the small streams that we cross many times with hardly a glance, were once the most important link in a vast chain of commerce. The early settler depended on these streams to get his surplus products to market. A glance at a road map of Indiana will reveal the importance that the early settler assigned to rivers and streams. Can you find any city or town of any size that is not located near a stream of …

A History Of Omaha Public Transportation, Dennis Thavenet Jun 1960

A History Of Omaha Public Transportation, Dennis Thavenet

Student Work

Omaha, unlike perhaps any other city in the United States, had as its first public utility a street transportation system. As an Omaha "first", it has had a long continuous history, easily as old as the State of Nebraska and only thirteen years younger than the city itself. As the institution was so closely connected with and was so contingent upon the city in which it was built, much can be learned from it about Omaha and the conditions that surrounded its growth. Because of Omaha's location on the fringe of the Great Plains and because of its location on …

Early History Of Malad Valley, Glade F. Howell Jan 1960

Early History Of Malad Valley, Glade F. Howell

Theses and Dissertations

The Malad Valley is geographically located in a unique position in the Pacific Northwest. The Bear River and its main affluent, the Malad River, are the only rivers in the Pacific Northwest that drain into the Great Basin, whereas the other streams and rivers of the states of Washington, Idaho, and Oregon empty eventually into the Pacific Ocean. It is also characterized for being the northern end of prehistoric Lake Bonneville, and eventually it was through this valley that an outlet opened to drain the lake. The soil deposits from this lake left a fertile valley, capable of producing most …

A History Of The Manti Temple, Glen R. Stubbs Jan 1960

A History Of The Manti Temple, Glen R. Stubbs

Theses and Dissertations

The history of the Manti temple, in a sense, began the first winter the Mormon Pioneers spent in Sanpete Valley. Because of the extreme cold they move to "temple hill" for protection. This same hill later became the site of the temple.

It had been predicted by Heber C. Kimball that a temple would someday be built on this spot. By 1873 plans were being made to this end. Preparations for construction were soon in progress and on April 25, 1877, the site was dedicated by President Brigham Young.

Biotic Succession In A Douglas Fir Forest On Saddleback Mountain (Oregon Coast Range), Jane Claire Dirks-Edmunds

Jane Claire Dirks-Edmunds Documents

This grant proposal, submitted to the National Science Foundation in 1959 by Dr. Jane Claire Dirks-Edmunds, requested funding to continue an ecological study at Saddleback Mountain. Dirks-Edmunds requested $15,570.05 to fund weekly trips with students to the site in order to collect meteorological and synecological data on the forest; she anticipated the project would last two years.

Dr. Dirks-Edmunds graduated from Linfield College in 1937; she returned to teach in the Biology department at Linfield from 1941-1974.

Middle East In Crisis: A Historical And Documentary Review, Carol A. Fisher, Fred Krinsky Jan 1959

Middle East In Crisis: A Historical And Documentary Review, Carol A. Fisher, Fred Krinsky

Books

This book had its inception in a common teaching experience. Although it is now almost two years since we were first involved in the preparation of materials on the Middle East for a course in the problems of American democracy, world events continue to remind us of the critical importance of the Mediterranean area. Our students were aware of an increasing variety of proposals for the role the United States should play in easing the tensions in the Middle East, but they were relatively unfamiliar with the general history and geography of the area. Thus they were unable to evaluate …

Mao Tse-Tung And I Were Beggars, Yu Siao Jan 1959

Mao Tse-Tung And I Were Beggars, Yu Siao

Books

This book was written neither in admiration of a hero nor in condemnation of a bandit. I had neither object in view. Moreover, to my mind, the line of demarcation between the bandit and the hero is at times faint. No, in the following pages I have attempted merely to set down an accurate record of certain episodes in my life selected from the storehouse of memory as of certain interest to the public at large and in connection with current events in the Far East. More important than this, I feel it my duty, not only towards my own …

A Study Of Early Utah-Montana Trade, Transportation, And Communication, 1847-1881, L. Kay Edrington Jan 1959

A Study Of Early Utah-Montana Trade, Transportation, And Communication, 1847-1881, L. Kay Edrington

Theses and Dissertations

Only a few hardy men had ventured into America's intermountain west prior to the year 1847. Arriving in this year, the Mormons, under Brigham Young, slowly conquered parts of the Great Basin and within a few years had produced a self-sustaining agricultural economy. production of a surplus in farm products awaited only the emergence of a "foreign" market. This market was soon forthcoming.

The developing process of Utah-Montana relations from 1847 through 1881 was a natural occurance. From the very first, men from Utah traveled northward. The Mormon experiment at Ft. Lemhi during the late 1850's was a prime example …

A History Of Murray To 1905, Clinton R. Ahlberg Jan 1959

A History Of Murray To 1905, Clinton R. Ahlberg

Theses and Dissertations

The valley and region in which Murray is located was well known to the trappers and exploreres before the Mormon Pioneers entered the area. The Escalante expedition visited the general area as early as September of 1776, and left a description of Utah Valley and its inhabitants. While in the Utah Valley, the Indians gave the Spaniards information about the valley to the north and the lake there.

Come fifty years later, the region became well known to the fur trappers of the great fur companies. Peter Skene Ogden, Jedediah Smith, and Provost with their companies of men traversed the …

Brigham Young's Philosophy Of History, H. Carleton Marlow Jan 1959

Brigham Young's Philosophy Of History, H. Carleton Marlow

Theses and Dissertations

"Brigham Young's Philosophy of History" attempts to describe how Brigham Young gave order and unity to the hubbub and confusion in which man lived. The laws which gave form and pattern to the baffling, diverse phenomena of and around man receive major attention. This thesis is an expository type of writing rather than an evaluation of Brigham Young's ideas and principles or laws in reference to other philosophies of history, Latter-day Saint theology, the modern natural exact sciences, or in reference to the current views of his times. This thesis is limited to a digestion of Brigham Young's works in …

A History Of The Federal And Territorial Court Conflicts In Utah, 1851-1874, Clair T. Kilts Jan 1959

A History Of The Federal And Territorial Court Conflicts In Utah, 1851-1874, Clair T. Kilts

Theses and Dissertations

In 1847 the Mormon pioneers arrived in the Salt Lake valley, bringing with them their own court system, which was to be their main resource for litigation for the next two years. The Church courts which were set up after 1847 proved insufficient, and in 1849 a need was felt for civil courts which could be used in the litigation with Gentile emigrants that were passing through the valley. To solve this problem, the State of Deseret was formed on March 12, 1849, giving the valley a civil authority. This was to last less than two years, for on September …
