A Historical Study Of Silver Reef: Southern Utah Mining Town, Alfred Bleak Stucki
A Historical Study Of Silver Reef: Southern Utah Mining Town, Alfred Bleak Stucki
Theses and Dissertations
While a number of short articles and histories of Silver Reef have been written, they tend either to be anecdotal in character or to emphasize the merely sensational aspects of the mining camp. These writings have failed to investigate some of the most basic sources of information concerning this highly interesting mining epic in Southern Utah. Therefore, there remains a real need for a thoroughly researched and documented history of silver Reef - a need that this thesis tries to meet.

The Concept Of History In The Thought Of Rudolf Bultmann And Reinhold Niebuhr, Joseph H. Bragg Jr.
Graduate Thesis Collection
The question of the nature and meaning of history has become increasingly important in contemporary thought. In theological circles, it has become the central theme of discussion. Thereare a number of reasons why this is so. The events of the times in which we live have brought about a definite rejection of any knowledge-equals-progress idea of history as well as a call for interpretation of the profound social crises which we confront. The widespread influence of existentialism, with its emphasis on relativism and subjectivism, has brought into question not only the nature of history, in terms of present reality, but …

The Other Presences In Irish Life And Literature, Douglas Hill
The Other Presences In Irish Life And Literature, Douglas Hill
BYU Studies
After returning from an extended stay in Ireland, the author recognizes the difficulty in describing and defining the life and literature of the Irish. The Irish literary Renaissance coincided with renewed patriotism and zeal for independence. Because of this reawakening, Ireland's history and mythology plays a major role in the contemporary collective unconscious of the Irish people, in stronger ways, perhaps, than in any other location among any other people.

The Influence Of The Southern Nevada And Southern Utah Folklore Upon The Writings Of Dr. Juanita Brooks And Dr. Leroy R. Hafen, Pansy L. Hardy
Theses and Dissertations
Since no writing is entirely objective, it is the contention of this thesis that Dr. Juanita Brooks and Dr. LeRoy R. Hafen, the most authoritative writers of the Southern Nevada and Southern Utah region, were greatly influenced in their writings by the folklore of the region and of the people. The two aspects of folklore which are most prominent in their writings are, first, those which treat the supernatural aspect of divine intervention, and, second, those which surround the struggle for survival.
Folklore stories of divine intervention include the lore of divine aid given in time of great need, divine …

The Wasatch Front In 1869: A Geographical Description, Rodney Dale Griffin
The Wasatch Front In 1869: A Geographical Description, Rodney Dale Griffin
Theses and Dissertations
This study is a geographical description of a specific area at a particular point in history. The year 1869 was chosen for the study of the Wasatch Front because it is a datum point; something to work from. Following the completion of the transcontinental railroad at Promontory, Utah, on May 10, 1869, the typically Mormon society at the Wasatch Front oasis began to be more rapidly integrated to the cultural and economic influences from the East. A geographic study of this area in 1869 focuses attention on the nature of the Mormon civilization and more fully illuminates the effect of …

Leisure Time In Eighteenth-Century Virginia, Andrew Jackson Johnson
Leisure Time In Eighteenth-Century Virginia, Andrew Jackson Johnson
Master's Theses
Eighteenth-century Virginia was strikingly agrarian. Tobacco planting on the plantations and farms created an ever-increasing need for new land. The growth of a dispersed rural society reacted against the formation of urban focal units and a middle class. This society did create, because of the endemic loneliness of the country, a people who desired companionship and proved to be gregarious and convivial.
The hospitality for which Virginians are well known was very much in evidence at this period and served in a subtle way to offer diversion to both guest and host. Travelers were invited to the plantations and farms …
