A Courage Untempered By Prudence : The Writings, Reforms, And Lectures Of Frances Wright, Erin Crawley Apr 2007

A Courage Untempered By Prudence : The Writings, Reforms, And Lectures Of Frances Wright, Erin Crawley

Constructing the Past

Wright was careful in her approach to slavery, saying it “is not for a young and inexperienced foreigner to suggest remedies for an evil which has engaged the attention of native philanthropists and statesmen and hitherto baffled their efforts.” This changed and eventually she would have no problem asserting her views as well as the accompanying remedies, as is evidenced in Nashoba. She spoke briefly on emancipation and colonization, but only to say that unless they became programs of national concern, they would never be implemented successfully. She also, while still disapproving of slavery, credited slave owners for stoically bearing …

A History Of Urban Coyote Problems, Robert M. Timm, Rex O. Baker Apr 2007

A History Of Urban Coyote Problems, Robert M. Timm, Rex O. Baker

Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings

We summarize previously published information on coyote attacks on humans in North America. This problem has developed primarily in urban and suburban areas of southern California since the early 1970s, and the frequency of attacks and other human safety incidents is increasing. Similar attacks are now known from at least 18 states in addition to California and from 4 Canadian provinces, with the majority of attacks occurring since the early 1990s. We review early explorers’ and settlers’ accounts of coyotes in the Los Angeles area, as well as development of coyote control programs during the 20th century. We also describe …

Searching For Truth In The Fast Day Sermons Of 1812, Amelia Benner Apr 2007

Searching For Truth In The Fast Day Sermons Of 1812, Amelia Benner

Constructing the Past

It is a vast generalization to say that all Federalists were anti-war, and that Federalist, anti-war feeling was centered in the Puritan northeast. It is equally an oversimplification to assume that all westerners and southerners were pro-war Republicans. But these assumptions were just as common at the time as they are today. The war of 1812, although not one of the most significant wars in the nation’s history, is one of the most complex. Over the years, dozen of causes have been suggested for the conflict: American merchants’ profits from the war in Europe, westerners’ attempt to further expand the …

Flavian Visual Propaganda : Building A Dynasty, Michael Vasta Apr 2007

Flavian Visual Propaganda : Building A Dynasty, Michael Vasta

Constructing the Past

The Flavian triumph itself was a complex and elaborate pageant that must be examined in each of its parts. It, as Beard persuasively argues, was designed to be the “Flavian coronation, the official launch party and press night of the Flavian dynasty.” The usurpers are transformed into an “established imperial dynasty” and Titus changes from “conqueror of Jerusalem to Flavian Caesar.” The triumph is the beginning of the propaganda program designed to give legitimacy to Vespasian and his sons.

Asiatic Wild Ass In Israel, David A. Blank Jan 2007

Asiatic Wild Ass In Israel, David A. Blank

Erforschung biologischer Ressourcen der Mongolei / Exploration into the Biological Resources of Mongolia, ISSN 0440-1298

The Syrian wild ass (Equus hemionus hemippus) lived in Israel in historic times until the 1930s, when it disappeared from the entire Middle East region. Khulans from other subspecies (E. h. onager - six individulas and E. h. kulan - five individuals) were brought to Israel from European zoos during 1968-69 (the authors of project considered that onager and kulan were the same subspecies) and these animals bred together in the semi-captivity conditions of the Haibar Yotvata Reserve. Later, during a 12-year period from 1982 through 1993, six groups totalling 38 khulans (17 males and 21 females) …

The Bird And Its Flight: A Struggle For Freedom In Bulgakov's Master And Margarita, Nicole Crocker Jan 2007

The Bird And Its Flight: A Struggle For Freedom In Bulgakov's Master And Margarita, Nicole Crocker

Undergraduate Research Symposium (UGRS)

The Russian senior seminar this semester focused on Bulgakov’s famous novel, Master and Margarita. This presentation focuses on one of the themes of the novel, specifically Bulgakov’s use of birds in his work. Birds appear numerous times in Master and Margarita, and it always has a connotation of either a lack of freedom or a recent achievement of this goal. There are even instances in which characters themselves, as they seek freedom from their former oppressive lives, become the “birds” in the novel. This paper is an exploration of bird imagery in the novel.

The History Of Eggs In Irish Cuisine And Culture, Mairtin Mac Con Iomaire, Andrea Cully Jan 2007

The History Of Eggs In Irish Cuisine And Culture, Mairtin Mac Con Iomaire, Andrea Cully

Conference papers

Eggs have played an important role in the Irish culture. For centuries, eggs have done so much more than simply nourish the body; they have soaked up mythological and folk belief, and have been used to celebrate certain religious festivals. They were also an early form of income or means of barter, often contributing far more to the family income than the commonly used term ‘pin money’ suggests. Initiatives sponsored by successive governments and the rise in the co-operative movement led to improvements in the poultry and egg industry from the end of the nineteenth century to the 1960s when …

Maya Paintings As Teachers Of Justice: Art Making The Impossible Possible, Kryssi Staikidis Jan 2007

Maya Paintings As Teachers Of Justice: Art Making The Impossible Possible, Kryssi Staikidis

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

This article examines Maya paintings as historical documents, political platforms and conduits for cultural transmission in two local Maya communities. Particular attention is paid to the recent history of genocide of Maya peoples in Guatemala and the production of paintings as visual reminders of cultural loss and regeneration, as well as visual means to protect Maya future generations. Collaborative ethnography and decolonizing methodologies (Lassiter, 1998; Tuhiwai-Smith, 1999) are used in this study; thus, Maya artists speak through written dialogues and interviews in first voice regarding massacres that were kept clandestine for three decades. This paper addresses the potential and capacity …

Slavery In New Hampshire: Profitable Godliness To Racial Consciousness, Jody R. Fernald Jan 2007

Slavery In New Hampshire: Profitable Godliness To Racial Consciousness, Jody R. Fernald

Master's Theses and Capstones

The goal of this thesis is to restore complexity, normalcy, and the later development of racism to the history and culture of slavery in New Hampshire. In addition to its role as a normal aspect of life in a hierarchical Atlantic world, slavery in New Hampshire gave birth to both racism and racial consciousness after its gradual demise in the state. The roots of slavery, the acculturation of different populations, changing interpretations of the state's history of slavery, and contemporary examples of its influence are presented here in an effort to correct the perception that slavery was inconsequential in the …

The Use Of John Adams As A Historical Character 1789--1874, Heather Baures Jan 2007

The Use Of John Adams As A Historical Character 1789--1874, Heather Baures

Master's Theses and Capstones

John Adams was central to the founding of the United States and has held enduring interest among many generations including his own. The foundation of Adams as a historical character was constructed both by people he interacted with personally and by the turmoil of politics, casting him in roles with conflicting results. After his death, Adams was placed in a variety of roles as a historical character as people struggled to make sense of the contentious decades leading up and including the Civil War. After the Civil War, a more sophisticated "warts and all" portrayal of John Adams as a …

Redefining Civilization: Historical Polarities And Mythologizing In Los Con Quistadores Of Pablo Neruda's Canto General, Mark J. Mascia Jan 2007

Redefining Civilization: Historical Polarities And Mythologizing In Los Con Quistadores Of Pablo Neruda's Canto General, Mark J. Mascia

Languages Faculty Publications

The article analyzes the book Canto General, by Pablo Neruda.

Pablo Neruda's poetic history of Latin America, Canto General (1950), is perhaps best known for its lyricized defense of oppressed and subjugated peoples throughout Latin America, as the author had perceived them. This collection, organized into fifteen sections (often, though not always, linear in its chronicling of Latin American history), treats this social theme from Pre-Columbian times through the mid-Twentieth Century. In addition, the collection is clearly infused with a profoundly Marxist ideology, as well as a call to arms against powers which Neruda had perceived as aggressors, namely …
