The Use Of Audited Self-Regulation As A Regulatory Technique, Douglas C. Michael Apr 1995

The Use Of Audited Self-Regulation As A Regulatory Technique, Douglas C. Michael

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

At first blush, "self-regulation" seems to be self-contradicting. If government regulation of an industry or problem is considered necessary, how can that responsibility then be returned to those from whom it was taken? Notwithstanding this apparent contradiction, audited self-regulation is used successfully by federal regulatory agencies. It is apparently adopted, however, on an ad hoc basis: in one industry or application but not in another that possesses similar characteristics. This article reviews these previously uncollected efforts at audited self-regulation to evaluate the general usefulness of this regulatory technique across industries and applications. These insights would be relevant not only to …

Experiential-Learning Activities In Undergraduate Developmental Psychology, Andrea D. Clements Mar 1995

Experiential-Learning Activities In Undergraduate Developmental Psychology, Andrea D. Clements

Higher Education

In two studies, I examined student responses to an increased emphasis on experiential activities in a required undergraduate developmental psychology course. For four experiential sections (n=134), each class topic was related to a specific, real-world application. Four other sections (n=187) were taught primarily by lecture, with one out-of-class observation assignment. The experiential sections rated the value of and interest in the subject matter higher and the courtesy and consideration of the instructor significantly more positively than did the lecture sections. Students in the two types of sections did not differ significantly in achievement. A follow-up study identified the origin of …

Turnabout Time: Public Higher Education In The Commonwealth, Richard A. Hogarty, Aundrea E. Kelley, Robert C. Wood Mar 1995

Turnabout Time: Public Higher Education In The Commonwealth, Richard A. Hogarty, Aundrea E. Kelley, Robert C. Wood

McCormack Graduate School General Publications (active until 2013)

"Stay the course?"

"Steady as she goes" is the wrong prescription for charting the future of public higher education in the Commonwealth. A major course correction is in order if the coalition vital to the system's well-being is to hang together and be strengthened. With sharply divergent views being held by the public at large, political and business leaders, faculties and students--all groups essential to continuing educational progress--mutual accommodations and adjustments are the order of the day. Major changes in finance, institutional missions, curricula, and academic standards for faculty and students alike are imperatives.

The classic academic model that has …

Gender Differences In Faculty Turnover, Byron W. Brown, Stephen A. Woodbury Mar 1995

Gender Differences In Faculty Turnover, Byron W. Brown, Stephen A. Woodbury

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

Over the last 15 to 20 years, colleges and universities have paid increasing attention to attracting and retaining faculty women. The rate of progress of women in academe has nevertheless been painfully slow. For example, statistics on economists collected and published by the American Economic Association (Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession 1994) suggest that in recent years, about 20 percent of Economics assistant professors in graduate Ph.D.-granting departments were women, about 10 percent of associate professors were women, and under 5 percent of full professors were women. The percentage of new assistant professors who are …
