An Action Research Project To Explore Providing Improved Academic Support For Newly Appointed Staff In A Higher Education Institution In Ireland, Roisin Donnelly Jan 2002

An Action Research Project To Explore Providing Improved Academic Support For Newly Appointed Staff In A Higher Education Institution In Ireland, Roisin Donnelly

Other resources

In my current professional role as an academic in a higher education institution in Ireland, I have only recently asked myself if I have been living in the direction of my educational values (Whitehead, 1989a). Educational values are ideas about what constitutes an educationally worthwhile process of teaching and learning: they define the relationship between knowledge, teachers and learners (Elliott, 1995). Action research begins with values (McNiff, 1995). In my attempts to become a more developed self-reflective practitioner, there are times when it helps me to take a time-out from my daily practice in work and instead put some time …

Brief 11: Partnering For Accountability: The Role Of The Chief Financial Officer At An Academic Institution, New England Resource Center For Higher Education, University Of Massachusetts Boston

There is rarely a perception in colleges and universities that everyone owns the financial plan. Deans, department chairs, and division heads are most concerned with their own budgets, rather than the aggregate. Mythologies about how the academic and financial sides of the house operate create artificial divisions and compromise the development of shared responsibility. Driven by myth, each side tends to view the other as a threat to its values and priorities. These views often stereotype the other in ways that become self-fulfilling prophesies. For example, Chief Financial Officers (CFOs) believe that academics are inefficient and that CFOs, with their …

This module is one of eight offered on the PG Diploma, all designed and delivered using Problem-based Learning. The entire PG Diploma is voluntary, and only Faculty who are keen to implement novel pedagogical …

Images Of Service: Reflections From The Campus Compact Midwest Collaboration Community Service Directors Fellowship Program 2000-2001, Beth Blissman, Jay Cooper Jan 2002

Images Of Service: Reflections From The Campus Compact Midwest Collaboration Community Service Directors Fellowship Program 2000-2001, Beth Blissman, Jay Cooper

Higher Education

We Americans are people of the journey. From boats across the Atlantic by way of Pilgrim quest, to the holocaust of the middle passage, to classic travelogues such as On the Road or Travels with Charley (in Search of America}, the stamp of the mythic journey seems to be indelibly planted on our national psyche. And as we all know, journeys have several staple elements: anticipation, consumption of a variety of foods at exorbitant prices, wrestling with a roadmap, and children in the back crying, "Are we there yet?" A quintessentially American component to the journey, however, is the postcard.

Service-Learning On American Campuses: Challenges For Pedagogy And Practice, Sandra Enos Jan 2002

Service-Learning On American Campuses: Challenges For Pedagogy And Practice, Sandra Enos

Higher Education

Over the past twenty years, there has been a steady increase in the number of students involved in community service and service-learning programs on college campuses. A recent report by Campus Compact (2003) noted that 33 percent of college students on its member campuses were engaged in community service programs during the last academic year. Surveys by Compact found that eleven percent of higher education faculty offered an average of 30 service-learning courses on campuses (Campus Compact 2003, 2003a). Increasingly, institutions of higher education are supporting these efforts by establishing community service and service-learning offices, staffing them, and by providing …

Moving Mountains: Institutional Culture And Transformational Change, Judith A. Ramaley Jan 2002

Moving Mountains: Institutional Culture And Transformational Change, Judith A. Ramaley

Higher Education

Our institutions are changing all the time but for the most part these changes do not make a big difference, either because the results are confined to an isolated segment of the organization or because the environment is not responsive. To be considered truly transformational, the initiative must alter the culture of the institutions by changing select underlying assumptions and institutional behaviors, processes, and products; it must be deep and pervasive, affecting the whole institution; it must be intentional; and it must occur consistently over time (Eckel, Hill, & Green, 1998).

Evaluating The Acquisition Of Empathy And Assertiveness Skills By Students Taking A Required Communication Skills For Pharmacists Course: Application Of The Instructional Design Process And Incorporation Of New Technologies, Diane R. Johnson

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The research question addressed by this study was: What were the differences in student performance of empathy and assertiveness skills that resulted from the application of the instructional design process with the subsequent inclusion of more active learning methodologies, skill-building application activities, and new technologies for course delivery? Prior to teaching the fall 2001 Communication Skills for Pharmacists, a first year Pharmacy course within a traditional Doctor of Pharmacy Program, the course was redesigned using the instructional design process. A Performance Evaluation Form, an instrument based on documented skill criteria, was utilized with a True Experimental Posttest-Only Control Group Research …

Development Of An Alternate Curriculum For Bachelor Degree Completion Students In The Lead Program At Ohio Dominican College, William A. Vensel Jan 2002

Development Of An Alternate Curriculum For Bachelor Degree Completion Students In The Lead Program At Ohio Dominican College, William A. Vensel

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

In the Learning Enhanced Adult Degree (LEAD) program at Ohio Dominican College (ODC), a cohort based accelerated delivery format, students who complete the Associate of Science (AS.) degree had only one bachelor's degree program to choose from, the B.S. in Business Administration. Because Ohio Dominican is a bachelor degree granting institution, classified as Baccalaureate General by the Carnegie Commission, it is desirable to see all enrolled students through to the bachelor degree. The problem addressed by this practicum was that with only one degree program to choose from at the bachelor level, retention of AS. students who desired the accelerated …

Effect Of Applied Academics On The Final English Course Grade Of Associate Of Science Degree Students In Automotive Service Management Technology, Kathleen Habel Jan 2002

Effect Of Applied Academics On The Final English Course Grade Of Associate Of Science Degree Students In Automotive Service Management Technology, Kathleen Habel

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Traditionally, students enrolled in two-year Automotive Service Management Technology degree programs, had a difficult time succeeding in required general education courses, especially math, English composition, and physics. They enrolled in classes open to the general student population but found that the material had little meaning or relevance to their chosen field of study. According to college records, the pass rate was less than the norm for liberal arts students. Because of this, faculty and staff decided that class material needed to be presented through applied academics. The new curriculum demonstrated the relevance of subject matter in general education classes to …

Development Of A Strategic Plan Based On The Evaluation Of Relevant Quality Measures For Joliet Junior College, Mary Lou D'Allegro Jan 2002

Development Of A Strategic Plan Based On The Evaluation Of Relevant Quality Measures For Joliet Junior College, Mary Lou D'Allegro

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The strategic planning process at Joliet Junior College had been dormant since 2000. The problem, therefore, was that no strategic planning was being conducted that adhered to the institution's accreditation mandates or addressed stakeholder expectations. The purpose of this dissertation was threefold. First, a systematic methodology to develop key performance indicators by soliciting the input of various stakeholder groups was generated. Second, an inventory of those key measures was developed via the input of a formative committee and validation by a summative committee. A pilot study was then conducted to further corroborate lucidity of those quality measures. The final inventory …

Determining The Relationship Between Educational Level And College Plans Between Different Types Of Child Care Providers For Southwest Missouri State University-West Plains, Renee S. Moore

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The problem for this study was that enrollment numbers in the child and family development program at Southwest Missouri State University-West Plains were unexplainably low. At the request of the University 's Chancellor, survey data was analyzed to explore the relationship between key variables.

There were two research questions for this study. First, "Is there a relationship between types of child care providers and their college plans?" Second, ''Is there a relationship between the respondent's level of education and their college plans?"

Datum gathered from a survey developed and administered at an early childhood professional development conference in Springfield, Missouri …

Development Of An Introductory Experimental/Adventure Education Course For Exercise Science Majors At Southern Connecticut State University, Patricia Ann Payne Jan 2002

Development Of An Introductory Experimental/Adventure Education Course For Exercise Science Majors At Southern Connecticut State University, Patricia Ann Payne

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

As part of the self-study process, core courses and field experiences of the Exercise Science Teacher Education Preparation Program (Exstep) were closely evaluated for their effectiveness in preparing pre-service teachers for student teaching and future employment. The problem was a lack of effective facilitation methods by the pre-service teachers in the Exstep program especially in the area of adult education principles, which include the affective domain of teaching and learning (SCSU Exstep self-study, 2000). An introductory course in experiential/adventure education would facilitate the principles of adult education, thereby enhancing students understanding of"affective" teaching methodologies, as well as philosophies, by giving …

Development Of A Student Satisfaction Survey For The Office Of Residence Life At Virginia Wesley An College, Keith Moore

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The problem is that poor student retention rates at Virginia Wesleyan College affect the financial stability of the institution. The college has become increasingly dependent on funds generated by residential fees. Thus, the purpose of the study was to develop a survey instrument that could be utilized regularly to determine student satisfaction with the residential services and facilities at Virginia Wesleyan.

There were two research questions for this study: What are valid criteria for a survey instrument that could be used to determine student satisfaction with the services provided by the office of residence life at Virginia Wesleyan College? What …

A Comparison Of Achievement Scores Of Students In Concentrated Weekend Classes Versus Those In Traditional Evening Classes At Middlesex Community College, Margaret C. Figgins-Hill

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Recently, Middlesex Community College (MCC) has begun offering a new and innovative format for non-traditional students taking courses to attain an associate degree. One of these courses is Sociology of the Family and is a requirement for all students in the Early Childhood Program. These classes are offered once per month on four all-day Saturday sessions to cover a full semester of study. The problem is that there are administrative concerns about the equivalency of all day Saturday classes in terms of student learning.

The purpose of this study was to determine if achievement scores of students completing the Sociology …

Developing An Organizational Model For Marketing Nova Southeastern University Academic Programs, Irving Rosenbaum Jan 2002

Developing An Organizational Model For Marketing Nova Southeastern University Academic Programs, Irving Rosenbaum

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Fragmented independent marketing efforts by 17 schools, colleges, and academic centers at Nova Southeastern University have resulted in missed opportunities for NSU, and an inconsistent image for the university. As new providers and methods of delivery create an increasingly competitive environment, marketing has assumed increased significance in higher education.

The purpose of this developmental practicum was to develop a plan for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of marketing at NSU. The research questions were "What would be the optimal model for establishing clear leadership over the now fragmented NSU marketing efforts?" and "What would be an appropriate and valid structure …

Development Of A Seamless Transition Program For Inmate Students At The Community College Of Southern Nevada, Theo A. Byrns

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The prison education program at the Community College of Southern Nevada (CCSN) has been in place since 1988. The Department of Prison Education offers a five-semester Associate of General Studies at facilities of incarceration in Southern Nevada. The purpose of the project was to develop a seamless transition program from a prison-based course of study to a course of study outside of the prison for community college inmate students and an implementation and evaluation plan. The seamless transition program would provide students with an opportunity to continue their higher education when released from prison.

The Adult Student In Higher Education And Training, Kathlee Despain-Rogers Jan 2002

The Adult Student In Higher Education And Training, Kathlee Despain-Rogers

Theses

This thesis will focus on the needs of the adult or nontraditional student. An in-depth look at bow non-traditional students came to be and how higher education is accommodating them today and tomorrow.

Before 1944, adult students were not commonplace on college campuses. At that time even high school graduation was a rare achievement. However, The Servicemen's (and women's) Readjustment Act of 1944, better known as "The GI Bill," changed all that. The Act provided many benefits but it is best known for giving former soldiers, both male and female, a chance at a college education or a degree from …

Service Helix: A Grounded Theory Of College Student Development And Outcomes Through Involvement In Community Service, Mary Kay Schneider Jan 2002

Service Helix: A Grounded Theory Of College Student Development And Outcomes Through Involvement In Community Service, Mary Kay Schneider

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

Community service and service learning have been lauded as ways of teaching civic and social responsibility during college. In order to better understand the concept of social and civic responsibility and whether students gravitated toward these concepts, this study was undertaken. The grounded theory was designed to understand students' experiences with community service, what they see as outcomes from their involvement, and the role of responsibility in this dynamic.

Grounded theory was utilized as the methodology because of the lack of research and theory regarding service and the outcomes for the servers. To achieve depth of understanding, information-rich participants were …
