The Work Of The World [2006 Keynote Address], Diane Chapman Walsh

Difficult Dialogues (2006-2013)

In her keynote address, Diana Chapman Walsh — President of Wellesley College — drew from personal experience in her work with dialogue in order to illuminate our own process. She underscored the importance of the Difficult Dialogues program here at Clark, both in academia and in this moment of history.

Clark University's Difficult Dialogues initiative was launched in 2006 and ran through 2013. The initiative aimed to raise awareness and develop skills of dialogue as a distinct approach to discourse, as well as encourage its practice among faculty, staff, and students.

This presentation will illustrate the innovative, specialized educational technologies developed and implemented at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Technologies include Tech-Rec, a first of its kind integration of technology and recreation that exercises the mind and body; the Dental Lab, with individualized computers at each dental chair, inter-oral cameras, and digital radiography; and the Library PODS.

This article discusses the views of professor Stanley Cavell on academic philosophy and corporate universality. He regards academic philosophy as the genuine present of the impulse and the history of philosophy which represents in public intellectual life. He is worried whether values and philosophy are teachable in universities and colleges. He stayed in the profession to show how to withstand moral cynicism and respond to the failures of academic institutions.

Developmental Outcomes Of Service Learning Pedagogics, Josh P. Armstrong

This study explored the psychosocial development outcomes of service learning from three distinct models: ongoing continuous service throughout a semester in co-curricular service learning; one time, intensive week-long spring break service learning trips; and ongoing service through a semester of academically-based service learning. A control group of students who had no involvement in service learning was used for comparative purposes. The Student Developmental Task and Lifestyle Assessment (SDTLA; Winston, Miller, & Cooper, 1999b) was administered to college students involved in each of the three types of service learning and the control group. Bureaucracy And Distrust: Germaneness And The Paradoxes Of Academic Freedom Doctrine, Alan K. Chen

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

This article proposes a new approach to examining individuals' claims to academic freedom under the First Amendment. It begins with the premise that a major source of confusion under current legal doctrine emerges from two paradoxes. The "positional paradox" exists because various constituents within the public university community may, at times, be state actors, free speech claimants, or sometimes simultaneously both. The resolution of many academic freedom disputes may depend on the relative positions of the free speech claimant and the alleged intruder on that freedom. The "First Amendment paradox" arises because, while a robust version of constitutional academic freedom …
