A Quality Scorecard For The Administration Of Online Education Programs: A Delphi Study, Kaye Shelton Sep 2010

A Quality Scorecard For The Administration Of Online Education Programs: A Delphi Study, Kaye Shelton

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

As the demands for public accountability increase for the higher education industry, institutions are seeking methods for continuous improvement in order to demonstrate quality within programs and processes, including those provided through online education. Because of the rapid growth of online education programs, institutions are further called upon to demonstrate that quality education is being delivered to students at a distance. This study sought to create such a method to provide institutions offering online education an instrument for assessing quality within their programs: a quality scorecard for the administration of online education programs. A six round Delphi study was undertaken …

In Search Of Critical Thinking: A Case Study Of A Midwestern University's Center For Teaching Excellence, Lourene Pike Thaxton Sep 2010

In Search Of Critical Thinking: A Case Study Of A Midwestern University's Center For Teaching Excellence, Lourene Pike Thaxton

Theses and Dissertations

Research indicated that students often graduate from colleges and universities without encountering critical thinking skills in undergraduate coursework. The first national report raising concerns over the declining quality of education stemmed from the National Commission on Excellence in Education (1983), and findings based on disappointing test scores were essentially repeated with the Spellings Report (2006) twenty years later. Although numerous scholars, experts, and politicians voiced concerns regarding what were perceived to be deficient methods of instruction in higher education, missing were the voices of professors who devised the curriculum and delivered student instruction. The intention of this study was to …

The La Crosse Promise – Economic Impact Study, George A. Erickcek Sep 2010

The La Crosse Promise – Economic Impact Study, George A. Erickcek

Reports

The Upjohn Institute conducted an economic impact study of a universal, place-based scholarship program for La Crosse, Wisconsin. This study examines the possibility of developing a program similar to the Kalamazoo Promise for the La Crosse area. The La Crosse area is facing a population decline, growing concentrations of low-income students, an aging infrastructure in the region’s largest school district, and regional sprawl that is consuming farmland and natural assets while creating new challenges of congestion and service delivery. As a response to these issues, this study explores the potential impact of a universal, place-based scholarship program.

An Exploratory Study Of The Experience Of Single Mothers In Higher Education : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Kelly Lyn Chandler Sep 2010

An Exploratory Study Of The Experience Of Single Mothers In Higher Education : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Kelly Lyn Chandler

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The purpose of this study was to explore the experience of single mothers in graduate school. Past research indicates heightened rates of psychiatric distress among single mothers (Jayakody and Stauffer, 2000) as well as overrepresentation of single mothers living in poverty (Kates, 1996; Zhan and Pandey, 2004). Qualitative studies on single mothers within post-secondary and undergraduate programs exist, but little research has been done on those obtaining graduate level degrees. This descriptive study included past or present students who maintained single parent status as well as had at least one child under the age of six during program enrollment. Data …

Interdisciplinarity: A Catalyst For Faculty Engagement Win Internationalization, Lisa Kim Childress Aug 2010

Interdisciplinarity: A Catalyst For Faculty Engagement Win Internationalization, Lisa Kim Childress

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

Despite the benefits of international scholarship to higher education institutions, faculty engagement in internationalization remains a major challenge for many universities. This study sheds light on this problem by investigating the strategies used by two institutions to engage faculty in internationalization through interdisciplinarity. This study found that as interdisciplinarity emphasizes comparative approaches, it prompted faculty to advance the comprehensiveness of their scholarship through the integration of cross-cultural perspectives. Notably, this study presents a model to assist institutions in overcoming endogenous obstacles by providing three infrastructural components--time, place, and financial resources--for faculty to engage in interdisciplinary and international scholarship.

Global Learning And The Engaging Questions Of Globalization, Daniel Paracka Aug 2010

Global Learning And The Engaging Questions Of Globalization, Daniel Paracka

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

While universities can act as important mediators amidst the highly disruptive and contentious change processes of globalization, very few institutions are intentionally fulfilling such a mission. Moreover, there are significant ethnocentric and ideological barriers to overcome before intercultural understanding and cooperation may occur. Nonetheless, universities in the global age are increasingly called upon to help prepare students to better perceive, understand, interpret, translate, and negotiate complex interdependent global contexts. This article examines the significance of several common reactions to the challenges of globalization for teaching and learning in higher education. It also outlines primary areas of focus for global educators …

Who Trains Distance Librarians? A Study Of The Training And Development Needs Of Distance Learning Librarians, Jack Fritts, Anne Marie Casey Aug 2010

Who Trains Distance Librarians? A Study Of The Training And Development Needs Of Distance Learning Librarians, Jack Fritts, Anne Marie Casey

Publications

Distance librarianship is continuing to grow in importance in the life of academic libraries. Institutions are being driven to take their programs to the students as a matter of economic survival. In libraries with a history of serving distance learners as well as residential students, the service requests from off-campus audiences have long surpassed those on campus. In addition, academic institutions are offering online courses to their residential students at an ever-increasing rate, which creates a new category of distance learning student. How do librarians obtain the training they need to serve this growing user base? This article looks at …
