Declining Faculty Wage Premiums: Analysis Over Time By Gender In The Public And Private Sectors, Frederick Floss

The wage premium is the relative wage of faculty members above that received by the average worker in the United States. This paper measures the wage premium by gender between faculty and full time workers from 1972 to 2007 using U.S. Census and the National Center for Education Statistics data on wages. The paper shows a decline in the returns to education for both genders. The implications of these trends are also discussed.

The Politics Of Data: Gender Bias And Border Mentality In The Eeoc Job Category Compliance Chart And How Transnational Gender Mainstreaming Can Offer Best Practices For Change, Jody Lisberger

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

Introduction, Anne Burns Thomas, Kathleen Ann Lawrence

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

In October 2009 the State University of New York at Cortland hosted an academic conference to discuss current issues and future possibilities for women in academia. The Succeeding as Women in Higher Education Conference provided a venue for formalizing and making visible the discussions taking place in the cloisters of the academy. Participants from around the globe shared insights through a variety of paper presentations, speeches, workshops, and discussions. Conversations were guided by the desire to answer a fundamental question: Is higher education an equitable professional environment for women in the twenty-first century? This special volume of Wagadu highlights critical …

Parenthood In Academia: What Happens When There Is No Policy?, Melanie Hill, Alison Nash, Maryalice Citera Jun 2011

Parenthood In Academia: What Happens When There Is No Policy?, Melanie Hill, Alison Nash, Maryalice Citera

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

In 2001 the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) declared that “the development and implementation of institutional policies that enable the healthy integration of work responsibilities with family life in academe requires renewed attention.” In the current study, we explore the perceptions and experiences of faculty at a university system that does not have formal work/family policies. Our findings demonstrate that with no formal policy, academic and professional faculty are left confused (and often misguided) about what options are available for parental leave.

Now I Have Something That Is Mine: Women's Higher Education Gains As Feminist Standpoint, Barbara Lesavoy Jun 2011

Now I Have Something That Is Mine: Women's Higher Education Gains As Feminist Standpoint, Barbara Lesavoy

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

Whose legacies of resistance are remembered? Whose are not? What meaning can we extract from feminist standpoints uncovered? Dominant societal structures record women’s lives in institutional memory where traditional scientific empiricism validates this as truth. Corrective in measure, this paper uses feminist standpoint to see and analyze five stories detailing segments of women’s higher education life challenges. Subject- positions within these stories counter distorted realities.

A Guide For Homeland Security Instructors Preparing Physical Critical Infrastructure Protection Courses, Steven Hart, James D. Ramsay

Security Studies & International Affairs - Daytona Beach

Over 350 academic programs in the United States currently offer instruction in the field of homeland defense and security. In spite of this growth at the program level over the past ten years, there still exists a shortage of instructors and coursework in critical infrastructure protection (CIP). Traditional instructor preparation (which is accomplished through the attainment of an advanced degree coupled with research and professional experience) does not currently produce enough instructors qualified in CIP because of the extremely limited number of CIP-related educational opportunities. Therefore, an alternate venue for instructor preparation must be provided. This article addresses that need …

The Dearing Report advocated that the traditionally separate post-compulsory education sectors of English higher education (HE) and further education (FE) should bring together the academic and vocational in a working partnership. This has led to significant changes in the working practices of colleges, lecturers and support staff. Drawing on the experiences of a sample of HE lecturers in colleges in south west England and a synthesis of relevant literature, this paper begins to examine the practice styles of HE lecturers working in FE institutions and the opportunities they are presented to engage with scholarship. The research acknowledges the issues involved …

Review Of The Politics Of Inquiry: Education Research And The “Culture Of Science", David Hursh

Education and Culture

Baez and Boyles critique the view that science can and should be objective and neutral and the impact such a view has had on the nature of educational research, teacher professionalism, teacher education, and the university. In particular, they link the rise of neoliberalism and entrepreneurialism with the decline of thoughtful, reflective, and ethical research and teaching.

Redesigning Introductory Biology: A Proposal, Eileen Gregory, Craig Lending, Amanda N. Orenstein, Jane P. Ellis May 2011

Redesigning Introductory Biology: A Proposal, Eileen Gregory, Craig Lending, Amanda N. Orenstein, Jane P. Ellis

Faculty Publications

With the increasing complexity and expansion of the biological sciences, there has been a corresponding increase in content in the first-year introductory biology course sequence for majors. In general this has resulted in courses that introduce students to large amounts of material and leave little time for practicing investigative science or skill development. Based on our analysis of data compiled from 742 biology faculty at a variety of institutions across the United States, we verified that there is strong agreement on the content appropriate for introductory biology courses for majors. Therefore, we propose that faculty teaching these courses focus primarily …

Due Process, Fundamental Fairness, And Judicial Deference: The Illusory Difference Between State And Private Educational Institution Disciplinary Legal Requirements, Paul Smith May 2011

Due Process, Fundamental Fairness, And Judicial Deference: The Illusory Difference Between State And Private Educational Institution Disciplinary Legal Requirements, Paul Smith

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “The educational process at a college or university, where students often experience new-found freedom, includes adherence to academic and behavioral standards. The institution may impose sanctions on students for breaching these standards. Prior to imposing a sanction, however, an institution must provide the student with a sufficient level of process or risk judicial invalidation of the sanction.

Courts distinguish the process due a student attending a state institution from the process due a student attending a private institution. Related to this distinction is the judicial claim that courts grant discretion to a private institution’s judgment regarding discipline for academic, …

Experiential Education Approaches In Nonprofit Management And Leadership Education: An Examination Of Master's Degree Programs Associated With The Nonprofit Academic Centers Council, Heather L. Carpenter Phd May 2011

Experiential Education Approaches In Nonprofit Management And Leadership Education: An Examination Of Master's Degree Programs Associated With The Nonprofit Academic Centers Council, Heather L. Carpenter Phd

Dissertations

University programs that prepare students to assume professional positions must be concerned with helping students link their work in university classrooms to their work in organizations outside of the academy. This concern often translates into incorporating experiential education into application-oriented university programs. Professional preparation is a central concern of nonprofit leadership and management programs. Prior to this study, however, there was no systematic attempt to document the various experiential education strategies employed in nonprofit leadership and management master's-degree programs in the United States. Documentation was not even available for master's degree programs associated with the Nonprofit Academic Centers Council (NACC), …

As more students are choosing community colleges to begin their studies, their general education experiences may affect their successful transfer to the baccalaureate, performance in the future workforce and participation as educated citizens.;Unfortunately, students have described general education as "a barrier" to their major or courses to "get of the way." At the …
