The Lived Experiences Of 3rd Generation And Beyond U.S.-Born Mexican Heritage College Students: A Qualitative Study, Richard Galvan Edd

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to describe the psychosocial and identity challenges of 3rd generation and beyond U.S.-born (3GAB-USB) Mexican heritage college students. Alvarez (1973) has written about the psychosocial impact "hybridity" can have on a U.S.- born (USB) Mexican individual who incorporates two distinct cultures (American and Mexican) in order to succeed in U.S. society, and yet, few empirical data is available beyond the 1st and 2nd generation on USB Mexican college students. As an example, there is no mention in the literature of two distinct and different worldviews present between immigrant and 3GAB-USB Mexican college students, which …

Higher Learning Research Communications

This case study reports on a teacher training experience for college professors in which participants were trained, taking advantage of technological tools, in two main teaching competences. First, professors were trained to use technology to enrich students’ learning outcomes. Second, they applied strategies of significant learning in the design of students’ learning experiences. The learning experience consisted in an International Certificate on Significant Learning integrated by six modules, 20 hours each. Every module of the program consisted of two consecutive webinars with online activities in between. The results showed the positive impact of the program on participants’ perceptions about the …

Notes On The Emerging Accreditation Regimes In Australia And New Zealand, Kristian Boehringer, Fionna Scott, Sue Blyth Jul 2011

Notes On The Emerging Accreditation Regimes In Australia And New Zealand, Kristian Boehringer, Fionna Scott, Sue Blyth

Higher Learning Research Communications

In recent years, new higher education regulatory regimes have emerged in both New Zealand and Australia. In Australia, the new Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) employs a risk management approach while New Zealand Quality Agency (NZQA) has adopted an evaluative approach. In practice, these varying approaches create real differences in the ways in which the regulatory regimes are applied. This paper considers one discreet but critical element of these new regulatory regimes, academic staff qualifications, as an example of the difference between the risk management and evaluative regulatory approaches. Unsurprisingly, the application of academic staff qualifications requirements is …

Conceptual Framework For Mentoring Doctoral Students, Iris M. Yob, Linda Crawford Jul 2011

Conceptual Framework For Mentoring Doctoral Students, Iris M. Yob, Linda Crawford

Higher Learning Research Communications

In the research and professional literature, there are at least four lines of inquiry around mentoring: perceptions of successful mentoring in general, mentoring of doctoral dissertations in particular, mentoring specific to the online environment, and relative importance of mentoring behaviors. In each case, particular qualities that make for successful mentoring are identified and described but not coalesced into a conceptual model of mentoring. In examining this literature, the authors identified 94 mentor behaviors and characteristics of effective mentors, which were reduced for redundancies to 55. These were clustered into a conceptual model of mentoring with two domains, academic and psychosocial …

Can Students' Concept Of Learning Influence Their Learning Outcomes?, Despina Varnava Marouchou

Higher Learning Research Communications

This paper aims to readdress the lack of empirical data concerning university learning and in particular the dynamics students’ conceptions of learning may have on students’ learning outcomes. This paper is written at a time when the EU commission for Higher Education (HE) through the Bologna Process declaration has put into action, since 1999, a series of reforms needed to make European Higher Education compatible, efficient and competitive for students and academics alike. One of the reforms was the development of learning outcomes in the form of the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). As part of the process …

In recent years, learning management systems (LMS) have become very popular in almost all traditional universities, generating a new learning strategy approach, mixing elements from both traditional and online learning: the blended learning or b-learning. How these new environments influence teaching activities and learning processes are the main topic of this paper. References about this subject are also analyzed, enriching them with the expertise and opinion of authors and other teachers. Finally, the students’ point of view is presented, through the results of a survey of Polytechnic School students at Universidad Europea de Madrid.------El b-learning a examen: Ventajas, desventajas y …

Can The Use Of Clickers Or Continuous Assessment Motivate Critical Thinking? A Case Study Based On Corporate Finance Students, Lucia Morales

Higher Learning Research Communications

This study explores the use of clickers as a tool to support, encourage and motivate critical thinking in higher education students. A case study was carried out with a cohort of undergraduate students undertaking the BSc. in Accounting and Finance during the academic year 2009/10, were corporate finance was a major component. Since the students in this sample had previously demonstrated passivity during their corporate finance classes, it was proposed that clickers would help motivate them to participate during face to face sessions. Previous research on the use of clickers shows evidence that this tool has a positive effect on …

A Comparative Empirical Analysis Of Characteristics Associated With Accounting Internships, James H. Thompson Jul 2011

A Comparative Empirical Analysis Of Characteristics Associated With Accounting Internships, James H. Thompson

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Business

Internships are a popular element used to enhance accounting education. Although previous studies have considered internships, many have addressed enhancement of subsequent academic and professional performance. The purpose of this paper is broader and examines several characteristics of accounting internships: the frequency of participation, eligibility requirements, process for securing internships, level of participation, availability and amount of academic credit, area of assignments, nature of post-internship requirements, and benefits to students. Two random samples, one in 1998 and one in 2003, of 100 accounting programs were analyzed in the study. For each program selected, the survey was mailed to accounting program …

When a graphic murder occurs, this man’s name gets linked to the victim, and police focus on him as a suspect. Although there is no evidence against him, a combination of poor police work and a town’s desire for closure lead to this innocent man being convicted of the crime and sentenced to death. Down to his last appeal, after spending 12 years on death row, a fair and honest judge is finally convinced to take a closer look …

Differentiation . . . But To What Degree? The Ed.D. And Ph.D. In Higher Education Programs, Jay Leist, Joyce Scott Jul 2011

Differentiation . . . But To What Degree? The Ed.D. And Ph.D. In Higher Education Programs, Jay Leist, Joyce Scott

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Research into higher education as a field of study is impeded by the lack of an authoritative database of all graduate programs in the United States. One resource used frequently is the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE) database, which is self-reported by the host institutions. In 2008, this database indicated that approximately 77 higher education (HIED) programs awarded the Doctor of Education (Ed.D.), 91 offered the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), and 35 awarded both degrees. This distribution recalls questions that have marked research in the field for 80 years: how do HIED programs differentiate between the two …

Paradoxes Of Online Teaching, David E. Bair, Mary A. Bair Ph.D. Jul 2011

Paradoxes Of Online Teaching, David E. Bair, Mary A. Bair Ph.D.

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

While much attention is paid to students’ experiences in online courses, there is sparse information regarding the experiences of faculty who teach online. Two university instructors address this gap in the literature and present an analysis of their experiences teaching graduate and undergraduate teacher-education classes at a university in the Midwestern United States. In this collaborative self-study, the authors analyze data consisting of their reflections and discussions, anonymous student surveys, anonymous course evaluations, and online observations by other faculty. They argue that online instruction poses several paradoxes. These paradoxical experiences illuminate the need for additional research about faculty experiences with …

A Guide For Homeland Security Instructors Preparing Physical Critical Infrastructure Protection Courses, Steven Hart, James D. Ramsay Jul 2011

A Guide For Homeland Security Instructors Preparing Physical Critical Infrastructure Protection Courses, Steven Hart, James D. Ramsay

Applied Aviation Sciences - Daytona Beach

Over 350 academic programs in the United States currently offer instruction in the field of homeland defense and security. In spite of this growth at the program level over the past ten years, there still exists a shortage of instructors and coursework in critical infrastructure protection (CIP). Traditional instructor preparation (which is accomplished through the attainment of an advanced degree coupled with research and professional experience) does not currently produce enough instructors qualified in CIP because of the extremely limited number of CIP-related educational opportunities. Therefore, an alternate venue for instructor preparation must be provided. This article addresses that need …

The Intersection Between Liberal Education And Health Profession Education At Armstrong, Andi Elizabeth Mincer Jul 2011

The Intersection Between Liberal Education And Health Profession Education At Armstrong, Andi Elizabeth Mincer

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This mixed methods inquiry explored how liberal and health professions faculty at one University perceived each College and the relationship between faculties in each of their Colleges. Three faculty members from each of these Colleges were interviewed individually and they then participated in a focus group, discussing prompt statements created from the transcripts of the interviews. The transcripts of the interviews and the focus group were then used to construct a web-based survey that was offered to faculty in both Colleges. Seventy percent of faculty completed the survey. Qualitative and quantitative data clustered into five main themes: 1) faculty largely …

Ethics In The Research And Publication Process, Susan R. Madsen, James Davis, Luca Gnan, Kathrin Moeslein Jun 2011

Ethics In The Research And Publication Process, Susan R. Madsen, James Davis, Luca Gnan, Kathrin Moeslein

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

With the fairly recent and highly publicized breaches of ethics among members of the business community, there is a need to re-examine specific strategies employed in all kinds of organizations. Many business faculty members are comfortable teaching ethics in the classroom, but are we (as scholars and educators) appropriately challenging our own ethical practices? To assist in raising awareness of ethical concerns within the EURAM, we believe it is important to focus discussions on challenging our own ethics, particularly as faculty members in our various roles. Although there are professional ethical codes, there have been few venues for dialogue. This …
