Research Brief: "Serving Those Who Have Served- Managing Veteran And Military Student Best Practices", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This study focuses on the role of the academic institution and the military student management, as the successful management of “military students” brings benefits to the student, the academic institution, and the community. In practice, a combination of the expansion of online education and the implementation of the Post-9/11 GI Bill Veterans Benefits Program has resulted in an increase of military student presence on college campuses and in online educational programs nationwide. In policy, collaborating with various departments on and off campus, such as the Admissions Office, Registrar’s Office, Finance Department, Financial Aid Office, University Counseling Center, Asheville Veterans Administration …

The Fiscal Crisis Of The Campus: The View From California, R. Jeffrey Lustig Mar 2012

The Fiscal Crisis Of The Campus: The View From California, R. Jeffrey Lustig

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

Over the last generation, state governments have undertaken a major disinvestment in higher education. The questions raised by these funding reductions go beyond matters of crowded classrooms, dilapidated facilities, and altered pedagogies to challenge the basic function of college and university education in the United States. Will higher education continue to be the gateway to equality and provider of broad horizons for citizens, or will it be transformed into a bulwark of social privilege and narrow conveyor of vocational skills for private consumers? These are the ultimate questions posed by the funding priorities of the state legislatures in America today.

Financing Higher Education: Privatization, Resistance, And Renewal, Gerald Turkel Mar 2012

Financing Higher Education: Privatization, Resistance, And Renewal, Gerald Turkel

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

Higher education’s financial crisis is being resolved largely through a politics of privatization, changing patterns of financing that increasingly shift responsibilities to individual students and their families. The politics of privatization makes it ever more difficult for low income students to attend college and has become a major financial burden for middle income people. Beyond cost shifting, privatization has increasingly subordinated the research and educational missions of higher education to imperatives of economic growth and competitiveness. Privatization has enhanced the entrepreneurial and corporate features of universities and colleges, changing the values of higher education away from notions of common property …

State Support Of Higher Education: The Roller Coaster Plunges Downward Yet Again, William Zumeta Mar 2012

State Support Of Higher Education: The Roller Coaster Plunges Downward Yet Again, William Zumeta

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

After just a few years of solid growth in state support, public higher education faced grim times in many states in late 2008. The culprit, as usual, was an economic downturn. A burst housing market bubble, long supported by historically low interest rates and too easy credit, precipitated this downward spiral. The ground trembled under the nation’s financial system when the bubble burst; banks, in turn, severely reduced access to credit by businesses, current and would be homeowners, and even students. The U.S. Treasury Department and the Federal Reserve System responded with drastic, unprecedented actions—including slashed interest rates and bank …

Challenges Facing Public Higher Education, Matthew Goldstein Mar 2012

Challenges Facing Public Higher Education, Matthew Goldstein

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

Across the nation, public colleges and universities are battling the effects of what President Obama has called “an economic crisis as deep and dire as any since the days of the Great Depression.” In many states, spending on higher education has been cut. Tuition increases have been imposed, placing greater demands on financial aid resources. Hiring freezes and/or personnel cuts have been implemented. Endowment values have dropped. And at many institutions, particularly community colleges, capacities and resources are strained by growing enrollments, as more people seek to retool skills, refashion careers, or gain some measure of job security.

How Strictly Scrutinized?: Examining The Educational Benefits The Court Relied Upon In Grutter, Patrick M. Garry Mar 2012

How Strictly Scrutinized?: Examining The Educational Benefits The Court Relied Upon In Grutter, Patrick M. Garry

Pepperdine Law Review

In Grutter v. Bollinger, the Court recognized student body diversity as a compelling state interest that justified the use of racial preferences in selecting applicants for admission to public university law schools. Normally, any state action reviewed under a strict scrutiny approach is destined for invalidation. But in Grutter, the Court bucked the trend and upheld the race-based admissions policy against a racial discrimination challenge brought under the Fourteenth Amendment's equal protection clause. Given the rarity of a state action surviving strict scrutiny review, it is instructive to examine the nature of the diversity interest recognized by the Court in …

Leadership Programs For Women In Higher Education, Susan R. Madsen, Karen A. Longman, Jessica R. Daniels

Bennis and Goldsmith (2003) argued that “immediate demands for leadership confront us daily. Our cities are in crisis, our communities face turmoil, our political, religious, and business leaders are repeatedly charged with ethical violations, and the world’s multiple demands require our immediate attention” (pp. xi-xii). With such critical needs in society today, leadership development has become an important area of inquiry within human resource development (HRD), and is now emerging as foundational to our field. According to Rosser (2007), leadership development is a unique aspect of HRD “because it is important to both scholars and practitioners and is a common …

Receiving the benefits of postsecondary education is important to nations throughout the world. A more educated citizenry results in, among other things, less crime and poverty, increased physical and mental health of individuals, and greater economic growth (e.g., American Human Development Project, 2009; Pascarella, & Terenzini, 2005). These benefits are felt at all levels of society (i.e., individual, community, and national) and essentially define the social and economic structure of a nation. According to a Lumina Foundation (2009) report “college-attainment rates are rising in almost every industrialized or postindustrial country in the world, except the U.S.” (p.1). The graduation rate …

Inside Rankings: Limitations And Possibilities, Kerryann O’Meara, Matthew Meekins Mar 2012

Inside Rankings: Limitations And Possibilities, Kerryann O’Meara, Matthew Meekins

New England Resource Center for Higher Education Publications

Americans love ranking systems. Whether we are ranking the hottest celebrities, the top ten singles, the top chef, or the next design star, ranking seems to be built into the American psyche as a symptom of our competitive, aspirational nature, and our desire to quickly understand the value of things.

The purpose of this article is to present our critique of the main weaknesses and contributions of dominant ranking systems, to consider some of the positive and/or neutral roles that they are serving, and to offer three examples of purposes and goals of higher education we think they are not …

Faculty Senate Newsletter, March 2012, Louisiana State University And Agricultural & Mechanical College

LSU Faculty Senate Publications

Message from President: With the advent of the political season and the opening of the Louisiana Legislature, universities up, down, and across our marshy state go public. Lacking competition from football and situated in a media market that generates fewer distractions than do major metropolitan areas, universities and their troubles routinely grab frontpage or top-of-the-hour placement in journalistic productions. Loud and colorful battles, whether against budget woes or recalcitrant lawmakers or consultants with reorganization plans, draw public attention to the big issues surrounding education but also distract public attention from the more subtle causes of university distress, many of which …

Assuring Quality In Belizean Higher Education: A Collective Case Study Of Institutional Perspectives And Practices, Neulin N. Villanueva Mar 2012

Assuring Quality In Belizean Higher Education: A Collective Case Study Of Institutional Perspectives And Practices, Neulin N. Villanueva

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This qualitative research study used a collective case study design to explore quality assurance practices and perceptions within Belize’s higher education institutions. Despite the passage of the National Accreditation Council of Belize Act (NACB Act) in 2004, the Council was never established and there remains, to date, no formal external quality assurance system in Belize. This study provides useful information for those policymakers and institutional leaders contemplating a way forward.

In-depth interviews were conducted with 17 academic leaders, including 2 presidents, 1 provost, 13 deans, and 1 quality assurance officer, drawn from 10 of the 12 existing local higher education …

Higher Education Opportunities For Undocumented Students In The United States: What Are The Policy Implications For Educators And Legislators, Hugo Ibarra, Ross Sherman Mar 2012

Higher Education Opportunities For Undocumented Students In The United States: What Are The Policy Implications For Educators And Legislators, Hugo Ibarra, Ross Sherman

Educational Leadership and Policy Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

A large number of undocumented students graduate from high school every year in the United States. This number is estimated to be around 65 thousand (Passel, 2003). Out of this population, only 5-10 percent continue their education in a higher education institution. As a society we should ask ourselves: What are the political, economic and moral implications of undocumented students inability to access higher education. How should educators and legislators approach this issue?
