Examining The Relationship Between Cbi Methods And Student Academic Achievement Scores In Higher Education, Jason Sibulkin

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

The international tertiary community continues to experience a substantial growth in ESL students, which represent a significant portion of total enrollment. To meet this demand for bilingual education EAP (English for Academic Purpose) programs such as CBI (content-based instruction) curriculum have been widely adopted as the preferred pedagogical approach to address this growing trend in higher education. Despite this popularity, there is a lack of longitudinal research on the efficacy of CBI courses, that link this approach to sustained improvement on student academic achievement scores. This study incorporates a mixed- methods design that investigates the academic performance of two sample …

Exploring Shifting Moments Of Remediation: An Analysis Of Policies Of Developmental Education Policies In The City University Of New York, Charles Jordan

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

For decades the City University of New York has served as a model for public higher education in the United States. Since 1969, CUNY has attempted to construct policies that support the postsecondary ambitions of New York’s underrepresented students. The era of Open Admissions that ushered in the 1970s remains one of the greatest social experiments in the history of higher education, permitting access to the university to all local high school graduates. Through fiscal erosion and shifts in legislative policy, the open admissions period devolved into a period of stagnation and low standards over the next thirty years. By …

Beware! Black Educated Women Receiving Access, Resources, And Emotional Intelligence, Kitana Holland

All Zyzzogeton Presentations

Despite having great success in higher education, most studies of Black female students only focus on exploring the success of Black women and generalize the experience of all Black women. These studies have failed to explore social class, environmental factors, sexual orientation, mental health, and other contributing factors that can play a role in successful completion of education. A review of relevant literature on emotional intelligence and its emphasis on the importance of self-efficacy, motivation, a supportive environment, a focus on identity and goal setting will enhance academic adjustment among Black women. This research argues that by developing emotional intelligence, …

Why Are Higher Education Institutions Failing Latinx Students In Helping Them Obtain A College Degree?, Adrianna Amarillas

Latina/o’s have been identified as the minority in the United States but now represent the majority of the minority. With the demand for higher education and degrees, this study explores whether or not higher education institutions in the U.S are fully prepared for the increase of diversity. Being the second largest ethnic group, this work attempts to identify addressing possible barriers that make it harder for students, specifically Latino students achieve higher education. Barriers such …

Higher Education In The Era Of Illusions: Neoliberal Narratives, Capitalistic Realities, And The Need For Critical Praxis, Ali H. Hachem Jan 2018

Higher Education In The Era Of Illusions: Neoliberal Narratives, Capitalistic Realities, And The Need For Critical Praxis, Ali H. Hachem

Faculty Publications

The modern American university is in transition, undergoing major changes to its very structure and function. While few of these changes are reflective of the rhetorical language of economic freedom, liberty, choice, and rights used in promoting the neoliberal state project, many others are clear indications of the re-coronation of a capitalistic oligarchy and the reinstatement of its class supremacy through the exploitation of society. While most of the critical literature in higher education attends to the structural macroscopic effects of the new capitalism, it is the argument in this article that more attention should be paid to the subjective …

Librarian and Staff Publications

Searching for information, which is not as easy as many students believe, requires creativity, formative evaluation, and persistence. Cultivating proficient and expert searches requires more than the vicarious and enactive experiences described by Bandura1 that are frequently employed in traditional library instruction: students need to be supported and coached in working in their Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), which stimulates learning.2

Exploring The Career Satisfaction Of Counselor Educators, Regina R. Moro, Rebecca Scherer

Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this article, the authors report counselor educators’ career satisfaction through a descriptive analysis. Seventy-five counselor educators from all across the United States completed an online demographic questionnaire and four self-report instruments related to career satisfaction in general, work environment, and mentorship experiences. The results indicate that counselor educators report satisfaction with most aspects of the job, but report dissatisfaction with pay/promotion and mentorship. This is important for consideration for current and future counselor educators, due to the amount of time and cost associated with obtaining a doctoral degree. The researchers discuss and suggest future research recommendations.

Faculty Support For Internationalization: The Case Study Of A United States Based Private University, Marta Almeyda, Babu George

Interculturalism In Higher Education In Ireland: An Analysis From A Strategy, Policy And Practice Perspective, Brid Ni Chonaill

Articles

Education is instrumental in preparing students to participate in increasingly diverse Irish, European and global societies, with higher education having a part to play in the process. Issues around migration and cultural diversity have gained less attention in the higher education sector in Ireland than at primary and post primary level with a few notable exceptions. Higher education is regarded as having a “critical role” to play in terms of “enriching Ireland’s cultural life, nurturing our understanding of our own national identity and that of other cultures and belief systems” [1]. Influenced by developments at European Union level, the approach …
