Let Me Edutain You! Practices Of Student Engagement Employed By New Lecturers, Harriet Dismore, Rebecca Turner, Rong Huang Feb 2019

Let Me Edutain You! Practices Of Student Engagement Employed By New Lecturers, Harriet Dismore, Rebecca Turner, Rong Huang

Plymouth Institute of Education

Over the last few years, student engagement has become a commonly used term in Higher Education across the United Kingdom, American and Australasian higher education systems. This article presents research on an area of student engagement absent from the literature, that of new lecturers’ practices. Following detailed analyses of interview data after one year of teaching, the findings reveal a range of perceptions, pressures and tensions relating to student engagement which influence practice. Most lecturers described engagement as an emotional construct (the need for students to ‘like’ learning) as well as a cognitive construct (what they learn). However, there were …

Rethinking What Food Security Means To Students, Nicole D. Peterson, Andrea Freidus Feb 2019

Rethinking What Food Security Means To Students, Nicole D. Peterson, Andrea Freidus

The World of Food: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on What We Eat and Grow

Definitions of food insecurity can be poorly aligned with student experiences, based on our collaborative research with the UNCC Jamil Niner Student Pantry. Interviews identify time, stigma, transportation, and quality of food as central aspects of student experiences with food insecurity, beyond the financial concerns addressed in the USDA module.

"What are Creative Commons licenses and how do they work? What is the difference between something that is free online and something that is truly 'open'? Did you know that it is often a Creative Commons license that puts the 'open' in Open Access scholarship and Open Educational Resources? Care-Experienced Young People Accessing Higher Education In Ireland, Eavan Brady, Robbie Gilligan, Siobhan Nic Fhlannchadha Feb 2019

Care-Experienced Young People Accessing Higher Education In Ireland, Eavan Brady, Robbie Gilligan, Siobhan Nic Fhlannchadha

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

While there has been considerable policy attention given to educational disadvantage in the Irish context in recent years, evidence on the educational experiences, attainment, and progression of young people with experience of living in alternative care settings (e.g. foster care, residential care) remains limited. International literature suggests that young people with such ‘care-experience’ typically have lower attainment and progress to higher education at lower rates than their majority population peers. This brief paper focuses on one of these issues, the question of how care-experienced young people in Ireland fare in accessing opportunities in higher education. It presents some very preliminary …

Ponte Las Pilas: Hidden Narratives And Latinidad At Macalester College, Luz M. Ramirez Cruz Feb 2019

Ponte Las Pilas: Hidden Narratives And Latinidad At Macalester College, Luz M. Ramirez Cruz

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

Latinxs in higher education, while numerous, still lag behind all major racial groups in terms of graduation. Why is that? It is society’s hope that education will provide equal opportunity and a path out of poverty, but are schools really providing equal opportunities for attainment or are they simply reproducing inequalities in society? To what extent does this idea, if at all, exist even at liberal and multiculturally focused institutions like Macalester? I ask first generation Latinx alumni to recount their college experiences at Mac in order understand how their narratives compared to those promoted in college advertisements on the …

Interpreting Rural Students’ Stories Of Access To A Flagship University, Anna-Margaret Goldman Feb 2019

Interpreting Rural Students’ Stories Of Access To A Flagship University, Anna-Margaret Goldman

The Rural Educator

Access has been an ongoing issue for rural students. In this study, I examined factors that have been proven barriers and supports for rural students. Rural college students who were part of the TRiO program at a flagship university shared barriers and supports to access higher education. Students talked about their college journeys by telling digital stories, using computer-based tools to create narratives. On-campus resources, family support, finding a place to belong in college, and self-efficacy proved to be important access and persistence factors for students.

The Ubt Knowledge Center:A Collaborative Design Approach, Edmond Hajrizi, Mary M. Somerville, Anita Mirijamdotter

International Journal of Business and Technology

In setting the institutional vision for University for Business and Technology in 2001, founder Dr. Edmond Hajrizi sought to educate Kosovo students to become active contributors to the society and in the workplace, within the country, the Balkans region, and beyond. The UBT Knowledge Center initiative extends the founding vision of national development through higher education. Since local knowledge, identity, and learning are necessarily situated, Kosovar students, faculty, staff, and administrators serve as topical experts and international educators from Sweden and the United States serve as design facilitators. Participatory design commenced in April 2017 when international faculty from Sweden and …

Bridging The Research/Teaching Divide With Dah And Sotl-Ah, Renee Mcgarry, Virginia B. Spivey Phd Jan 2019

Bridging The Research/Teaching Divide With Dah And Sotl-Ah, Renee Mcgarry, Virginia B. Spivey Phd

Publications and Research

This paper explores the potential for rigorous pedagogical scholarship to complement developments in digital art history (DAH). In addition to introducing ideas and methods that characterize scholarship of teaching and learning (SOTL) in higher education, we focus on two major themes: how digital tools and techniques can support robust scholarship of teaching and learning in art history (SoTL-AH) and ways that SoTL-AH can be used to evaluate and demonstrate the impact of DAH projects in the classroom and the public realm. Our goal is to encourage greater exchange between these two emerging fields that can together advance art historical study.

Investigation Of Guided Study Tables As A Support For College Students With Asd In The Transition To Post-Secondary Education, Rebecca Edgington

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

The purpose of this quantitative research study was to investigate the relationship of guided study tables on the academic success and development of executive functioning skills needed for independence in the transition to post-secondary education for college students with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). Using Schlossberg’s transitional theory as the theoretical framework and executive functioning skills as the conceptual framework, the study investigated a specific support of a comprehensive, transitional program available to college students to help with the transition to college. A correlational design and a descriptive survey provide foundational research and evidence connected to a specific support designed to …
