In debates on the future of work, a common theme has been how work became
less secure through the denial of employee status. Though much of the attention
has focused on other industries, precarity has also affected those working in
higher education, including graduate student employees, contributing to what is
now called the “gig academy.” While universities have reassigned teaching and
research to graduate assistants, they have also refused to recognize them as
employees. Nevertheless, unionization has grown considerably since 2012, most
significantly at private institutions. Utilizing a unique dataset, this chapter

Objective: The primary goal of the study was to examine students’ perceptions of classroom assessment at a public university in Afghanistan. Exploring current assessment practices focused on student and faculty members lived experiences was a secondary goal. The study also sought to collect evidence on whether or not the new assessment policy was effective in student achievement.

Method: Authors used an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design to conduct the study. Initially, we applied the Students Perceptions of Assessment Questionnaire (SPAQ), translated into Dari/Farsi and validated, to collect data from a random sample of 400 students from three colleges: Agriculture, Education, and …

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

Cultural humility represents a set of concepts that extend the core notion of cultural competence required for licensed professionals in audiology and speech-language pathology (ASHA, n.d.). A cultural humility mindset includes self-evaluation, addressing power imbalances, and fostering productive partnerships (Tervalon & Murray-Garcia, 1998). This paper examines each of these aspects of cultural humility and discusses possible ways to apply them in communicative sciences and disorders education.

Adequate service provision for culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) clients has been an issue the field of speech-language pathology (SLP) has been grappling with. At the root of this issue is a lack of professional CLD training in SLP programs and a lack of diversity among the students enrolled in these programs. The current study described the MS-SLP bilingual emphasis curriculum and recruitment practices at Florida International University (FIU). Outcomes for the MS-SLP graduates were also explored. Creating A Society Of Active Citizens: A Study Of The Civic Engagement Of Alternative Breaks Alumni, Annjanette Maire Weaver

Alternative Breaks are service trips that occur at colleges and universities all around the United States, but little is known of their long-term impact on the participants. This study explored how alumni of Alternative Break programs were civically engaged in their communities post-graduation. The survey instrument, modeled on the Life After College survey, was distributed nationally to Break Away member Alternative Break program alumni. The survey asked respondents to share information about their Alternative Break experience, such as if they served as a leader or went on international experiences. Respondents were also asked to share their post-college civic engagement experiences …

Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education

This practice-based approach argues service learning can teach social justice in parks & recreation management education. The US parks system creation and history is rooted in injustice. Use of US parks and park service employment remain inequitable today. Significant work must be done in the provision of recreation and park services to all members of the community, including those who have been traditionally marginalized or underserved. The industry requires recreation and parks professionals at all levels who are informed and intentional about inclusion and social justice, which starts with parks and recreation management education.

NERA Conference Proceedings 2021

The need to build community in mathematics learning spaces was exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. This study examined the community-building efforts of mathematics TAs during a dynamically uncertain period and how they engaged in pandemic-sensemaking to make sense of and adapt their community-building efforts for remote instruction. We found that TAs engaged in various community-building activities through the synchronous and asynchronous interactions afforded by the design of the course (e.g., during sections, in office hours), and pandemic-sensemaking enabled them to better understand students’ challenges and adapt their efforts to attend to the challenges with building community.

The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study was to understand the lived experiences of Air Force intelligence professionals who decide to pursue a college degree. The study focused on the experiences of 10 current Air Force intelligence professionals who have completed an intelligence studies (or related) program and are currently serving in an intelligence operations group. The philosophical foundation used in this study was Heidegger’s hermeneutic phenomenology, and the secondary theoretical framework that was applied was the expectancy-value theory, which provides the underlying constructs and propositions for how Air Force intelligence professionals make sense of their careers. The introductory communication course has a history of producing meaningful scholarship that shapes teaching and learning at institutions of higher education around the world. The scope of this research is broad and, as such, calls for a meta-synthesis of trends in and avenues for future research. This project examines published work from the past decade—2010 through 2019—in key outlets that regularly publish introductory course-focused research (The Basic Communication Course Annual, Communication Education, Communication Teacher, The Journal of Communication Pedagogy). The African Journal of Information Systems

This paper explores the prevailing higher education environment in Eritrea as a case study, with the aim of identifying factors influencing knowledge sharing and collaboration in the community both within and across the institutions. The research is based on qualitative data from semi-structured interviews with seven respondents: leaders and senior academicians representing all six higher education institutions (HEIs) in Eritrea. It investigates the environment from the socio-technical systems perspective with a holistic view of the institutional system rather than sub-systems.
