Programs In Organizational Communication And Public Relations, Robert Ross

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This study reports findings from a survey of members of the International Communication Association’s Organizational Division regarding the status of organizational communication and public relations programs in higher education. Data from seventy-nine respondents indicate that relatively few institutions offer full baccalaureate degrees in these areas, with most providing emphases or cognates within broader communication or journalism programs. Content analysis of definitions shows organizational communication conceived as encompassing all communication processes contributing to organizational functioning, while public relations is framed as boundary-spanning communication directed primarily toward external publics. Curricular patterns reveal overlap in courses such as public speaking, interpersonal, and small …

Do Students Repay High Grades With High Evaluations? An Old Question Revisited, Bena H. Harper Apr 1987

Do Students Repay High Grades With High Evaluations? An Old Question Revisited, Bena H. Harper

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This study investigates whether students reward lenient grading with higher course and instructor evaluations. The research examined data from fourteen graduate teaching assistants and 1,335 students enrolled in the basic hybrid speech course at Oklahoma State University across the 1983–1984 academic year. Grades awarded by instructors were compared with mean student evaluations of both the instructor and the course. While significant differences were found between the grade distributions of easier and harder graders, no significant differences emerged in corresponding instructor or course evaluation scores. These findings suggest that although grading practices vary, higher grades do not automatically result in more …

A Survey Of Hiring Practices In The Communication Arts And Sciences, Robert F. Ross, Philip Emmert

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This study reports findings from a national survey examining faculty hiring practices in communication departments across the United States. Questionnaires were distributed at the 1985 Speech Communication Association Convention Placement Center to three respondent groups: department chairs, search committee members, and job applicants. Results from 99 returned surveys provide quantitative data on departmental structures, search procedures, evaluative criteria, and interview formats. Most departments reported frequent searches and high proportions of tenure-track openings, indicating an active job market. Analyses of hiring roles showed that department chairs are centrally involved throughout the process, from forming committees to final salary negotiation. Across institutions, …

Involvement and critique from educators in dialogue with researchers is a critical element for achieving clarity about what research will benefit educational policy and practice. The AAHE Research Forum is convened annually to involve individuals committed to research and scholarship in higher education. The Forum stimulates educators' involvement in creating a research agenda that speaks to current educational concerns. Since each year's agenda is developed around the conference theme, educators and researchers can continually rely on the Forum agenda as an up-to-date source of research questions of common interest that flow from the year's most central educational issues. Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

This study examines the input-output relationship for private undergraduate education. The objective s to identify the relative contributions of human and physical resources in the production of quality undergraduate education. The research methods are noteworthy in three general respects. First, the theoretical orientation emphasized interdependence among inputs and outputs in higher education. The significance of simultaneity is demonstrated in an empirical model estimated via a three-stage least-squares technique. Second, the study introduces an original and promising data set for research in higher educational production. Of special note is an index of output reflecting the quantity and quality of institutional production. …

A Second Chance: Meeting The Needs Of Adult Learners, Elizabeth F. Fideler

New England Journal of Public Policy

Changing demographics and economic factors are focusing national attention on adult learning as a major resource for solving many of the nation 's social and economic dilemmas. However, adult learners, the poor especially, face obstacles to educational advancement even where tuition is waived or incentive grants are given. Despite the considerable recent growth of adult education, the vast number of those who need it the most are not as yet participating. This article examines adult-education practices and participation in general — in the areas of literacy, occupational education, and higher learning — and conditions in Massachusetts in particular. It explains …

Clark University History

Book Jacket description:

"One hundred years ago Clark University emerged as part of a growing network of American research universities intended to be the peers of any in Europe. Opening in the fall of 1889 as an all-graduate and research institution, and having added an undergraduate program in 1902, the institution has retained its comparative smallness while actively maintaining both the research mission and the international scholarly relationships of its earliest years.

Clark has been marked by scholarly and educational innovation from its chartering in 1887 to its present-day academic program. The major milestones generally associated with Clark are all …

Promoting The Department Within The Institution, Thomas M. Scheidel Jan 1987

Promoting The Department Within The Institution, Thomas M. Scheidel

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article outlines effective strategies for departmental leadership and institutional advocacy based on a case study from the University of Washington’s Department of Speech Communication. Emphasizing the chair’s central role in promoting departmental visibility and influence, the discussion identifies two essential requirements: active advocacy and evidence-based representation. The chair must serve as a visible and persuasive representative of the department through continual institutional engagement, cultivating relationships across administrative levels, and contributing to governance through service on committees. Equally important is the use of demonstrable evidence—teaching excellence, curricular strength, scholarly productivity, and faculty service—to substantiate departmental claims of quality. Drawing on …

Corporate Management Strategies: Applications For Communication Administrators From Iacocca: An Autobiography, Ladonna Mcmurray Geddes Jan 1987

Corporate Management Strategies: Applications For Communication Administrators From Iacocca: An Autobiography, Ladonna Mcmurray Geddes

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article interprets Lee Iacocca’s managerial philosophy for application in academic and communication administration. Framing Iacocca’s principles of motivation, accountability, and leadership within a university context, the discussion explores how participatory management and clear goal articulation can improve departmental performance. The analysis emphasizes Iacocca’s model of “management by wandering around” as a strategy for maintaining visibility and fostering open communication. It also adapts his quarterly review system and “equality of sacrifice” concepts to faculty evaluation and workload distribution. Drawing from administrative experience, the author proposes a Distribution of Effort Agreement to formalize faculty commitments across teaching, research, and service, aligning …

The State Of Mass Communication, Ellen Wartella Jan 1987

The State Of Mass Communication, Ellen Wartella

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article evaluates the state of mass communication as an academic field, examining its organizational, educational, and theoretical conditions in the mid-1980s. The discussion situates mass communication within a context of growing public, institutional, and industrial interest in media and communication technologies. Three major areas are identified. Organizationally, the field is experiencing departmental consolidation and debate over nomenclature as traditional speech and journalism programs merge into unified communication units. Educationally, enrollments are expanding rapidly, yet faculty shortages and an industrial hiring model threaten academic rigor. Theoretically, the discipline faces tensions between professional training and liberal arts orientations, as well as …

Assessing The Health Of The Profession: A Diagnosis Of Theatre, Douglas N. Cook Jan 1987

Assessing The Health Of The Profession: A Diagnosis Of Theatre, Douglas N. Cook

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article assesses the overall condition of theatre as both a professional and academic field within the broader context of the performing arts. Using a metaphor of medical diagnosis, the analysis identifies theatre as a “fabulous invalid”—ailing but resilient. National data demonstrate the expansion of regional and nonprofit theatre, with significant growth in professional companies, productions, and employment since the 1970s, despite persistent financial instability. The discussion links this professional growth to developments in theatre education, including the proliferation of degree programs, the acceptance of the MFA as a terminal degree, and the emergence of cooperative relationships between professional and …
