Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Curriculum development for a public and corporate communication major at Butler University is described as a response to student interest in career-oriented liberal arts education. The article explains how the program combined speech communication, English, journalism, and radio-television coursework to prepare students for public relations, corporate communication, media, and public-sector communication roles. It outlines the influence of public relations education recommendations, community advisory input, and faculty committee planning on the program’s design. Figuring Workload Equivalencies Of Performance/Production Assignments For Theatre Faculty, Lorayne W. Lester, Robert Yowell, Donald L. Loeffler
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Originating from an ACA-sponsored symposium at the 1983 Southeastern Theatre Conference Convention, this piece addresses how theatre faculty workload should account for performance and production assignments. The symposium introduction identifies the discussion as an effort to document common practices among theatre programs at Southeastern colleges and universities. The published contributions focus on directing, design, technical supervision, practicum instruction, and summer production work as forms of teaching, research, creative activity, and university service. Particular attention is given to the need for academic administrators to recognize theatre production as part of faculty workload rather than as uncompensated service. The piece also describes …

The Outsiders: Women In The Academy, Michele T. Myers
The Outsiders: Women In The Academy, Michele T. Myers
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Women’s status in higher education is examined through legal, institutional, and statistical changes following major equity legislation of the early 1970s. The article acknowledges gains in women’s access to higher education, women’s studies programs, professional networks, and administrative development, while emphasizing persistent disparities in employment, rank, tenure, salary, and promotion. Drawing on reports from the Women’s Equity Action League, the American Association of University Professors, and a National Research Council study of matched male and female Ph.D.s, the article presents evidence that women remain concentrated in lower academic ranks, earn less than men, and advance more slowly toward tenure and …

An Idea Of The College, Edward W. James
An Idea Of The College, Edward W. James
Bridgewater Review
Cardinal John Henry Newman in the spring of 1852 delivered a series of lectures, eventually published as The Idea of a University, which argued against those who thought that education should be useful. These proponents of utility maintained “that Education should be confined to some particular and narrow end and should issue in some definite work” – a view, Newman observed, which they “seemed to have thought ... needed but to be proclaimed ... to be embraced.” Were Newman here today he would soon see that the issues troubling him trouble us. To be sure, we face now new slogans, …
