What Role Do Teaching Mentors Play In Supporting New University Lecturers To Develop Their Teaching Practices?, Rebecca Turner, Rong Huang, Oxana Poverjuc, Lynne Wyness
What Role Do Teaching Mentors Play In Supporting New University Lecturers To Develop Their Teaching Practices?, Rebecca Turner, Rong Huang, Oxana Poverjuc, Lynne Wyness
Plymouth Business School
We examine the support mentors provide to new lecturers as part of a postgraduate programme designed to familiarise them with university teaching. Drawing on qualitative data collected from 13 new lecturers and nine mentors, we document the support new lecturers’ call upon to shape their practice. We identify important issues surrounding the significance of mentor choice, in terms of a mentor’s experience, position and knowledge of their role, which determine the effectiveness of professional learning. Difficult issues were observed relating to prioritisation and workload for new lecturers and their mentors, and as a consequence the wider networks of colleagues and …

Job Satisfaction Of Adjunct Faculty Who Teach Standardized Online Courses, Claudia A. Ruiz
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The present study investigated the job satisfaction of 205 adjunct faculty teaching standardized online courses at a private university in the United States. The extent of the relationship between demographic, motivator, and hygiene factors associated with adjunct faculty job satisfaction were identified. Results from this study indicate that adjunct faculty value work recognition, technical and instructional technology support, and take pride in their teaching. Important faculty satisfaction predictors based on analyses of hierarchical regression models were motivator factors recognition, achievement, and work itself, and hygiene factors policy and administration and salary.

Footprints In The Hallways: The Effects Of Mentoring On The Career Path Of Women Deans, Adrienne Marie Robinson
Theses and Dissertations
The study explores the career path of women deans in higher education. The mentoring of female senior level administrators in higher education regarding leadership opportunities is significant. The study’s purpose is to explore mentoring opportunities through definitions and various programs. The survey chosen was the Alleman Mentoring Activities Questionnaire (AMAQ). This questionnaire is pertinent because of its ability to measure mentoring processes and the impact it may have on mentoring relationships. To collect data, 155 women deans were distributed the survey and 76 were completed and returned. This study yielded a 49% response rate. The survey was distributed to women …
Nurturing University Students To Be Social Entrepreneurs: Relevance Of Service Leadership Education, Daniel T. L. Shek, Li Lin
Nurturing University Students To Be Social Entrepreneurs: Relevance Of Service Leadership Education, Daniel T. L. Shek, Li Lin
Pediatrics Faculty Publications
When the concept of social entrepreneurship becomes more popular, many universities explicitly claim that they wish to nurture social entrepreneurs. In this paper, the concept of social entrepreneurship and the successful attributes of social entrepreneurs are outlined. With reference to the question of how university students can be nurtured to be social entrepreneurs, it is suggested that the service leadership model proposed by the Hong Kong Institute of Service Leadership and Management is a good framework to be considered. In the framework, it is asserted that there are three attributes of a successful service leader – leadership competence, moral character, …

Message from President: In recent months, the top officers—or, as they like to call themselves, the “CEOs”—of Louisiana’s university systems have asked their public relations departments to proclaim their great accomplishment in staving off the economic starvation of campuses by a penurious legislature. According to this narrative, a heroic effort by the Fab Four of higher education administration convinced backwoods politicians that prosperous campuses were good for everyone. Like all narratives, this one features a beginning and an ending. Beginnings and endings have a way of eclipsing our vision of what went on before or after the story. By focusing …

A Greener Dominican?: The Journey Of A University Perched On The Threshold Of Sustainability, Lauren Guittard
A Greener Dominican?: The Journey Of A University Perched On The Threshold Of Sustainability, Lauren Guittard
Senior Theses
We live in a culture in which we find ourselves disconnected with the natural world and yet suffering from the mounting implications of the impact that our actions as developing industry-based societies have had on the ecological systems of the planet. Institutions of Higher Education, such as colleges and universities, educate most of the people who develop and manage institutions in society. As centers for learning and the dissemination of knowledge, institutions of higher learning have an obligation to promote a culture of sustainability within their communities. This paper that explores concepts of sustainability in relation to higher education with particular …
Blended Learning And Bottlenecks In The California State University System: An Empirical Look At The Importance Of Demographic And Performance Analytics, Maureen Augusta Guarcello
Blended Learning And Bottlenecks In The California State University System: An Empirical Look At The Importance Of Demographic And Performance Analytics, Maureen Augusta Guarcello
Dissertations
In Fall 2014 over 460,000 students enrolled in the 23-campus California State University system; unfortunately, more than 20,000 qualified applicants were denied admission due to capacity and budgetary constraints. In response to continued overcrowding, the Chancellor's Office and Board of Trustees are investigating "bottlenecks," defined as anything limiting students' ability to graduate in a timely manner. Blended learning, a pedagogy combining face-to-face and computer-mediated instruction, presents a potential solution to alleviate overcrowding and bottleneck problems.
In an effort to investigate the extent to which student demographics and performance analytics explain student success outcomes in a popular blended learning psychology course, …

Identifying Characteristics That Influence First-Time, Full-Time Freshmen Persistence And Exploring Effective And Strategic Retention Initiatives For An At-Risk Student Population, Erin Lambert Dornan
Dissertations
The purpose of this research is to understand background and behavioral characteristics that influenced student persistence of first-time, full-time, freshmen at a four-year public institution, The University of Southern Mississippi (USM). This study provided an outline for institutions of higher learning to create a profile assessment on their campus and identify students that were more likely to need additional support in order to be successful. Research has shown that understanding students’ needs can increase student retention on campus (Gerdes & Mallinckrodt, 1994; Briceño-Perriott & Mianzo, 2006; O’Keefe, 2013). Coll and Stewart (2008), explained that research in this field was more …

Pathways To Student Success: A Multiple Case Study On Four-Year Colleges’ Organizational Change In Performance Funding States, Lindsay K. Wayt
Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Federal and state policies have recently moved the higher education accountability focus from access to completion. As completion and other student success accountability measures are put in place, institutions are going through organizational change to accommodate these new policies and to adjust their focus onto student success measures such as retention and graduation rates. This multiple case study’s purpose was to describe the institutional efforts and changes at small- to medium-sized, four-year public institutions in states where at least 20% or more of state funds are or are planned to soon be allocated based on performance metrics. The findings of …
The Grief Of A Teacher: Reflections On Trauma, Dis/Connections, And Institutional Paradox, Deborah J. Cohan
The Grief Of A Teacher: Reflections On Trauma, Dis/Connections, And Institutional Paradox, Deborah J. Cohan
eJournal of Public Affairs
This article examines, first and foremost, the experience of teaching about violence and, secondarily, how being a contingent faculty member uniquely complicates the already complicated task of teaching about trauma. It is this tension—this nexus of relationships between violence itself and the situation of being contingent, each predicated on isolation—that is the subject of this analysis. Through auto-ethnographic methods, case studies of students studying trauma, and conversations with faculty, the author exposes layers of personal, relational, organizational, and institutional brokenness. In delving into the connection of emotion and social structure, she hopes the article appeals to and benefits a range …

In Defense Of Academic Free Dom And Faculty Governance: John Dewey, The 100th Anniversary Of The Aau P, And The Threat Of Corporatization, Nicholas J. Eastman, Deron Boyles
Education and Culture
This essay situates John Dewey in the context of the founding of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) in 1915. We argue that the 1915 Declaration of Principles, together with World War I, provides contemporary academics important historical justification for rethinking academic freedom and faculty governance in light of neoliberalism and what we argue is an increased corporatization of higher education in the United States. By revisiting the founding of the AAUP and John Dewey’s role in the various debates surrounding the establishment of the organization—including his broader role as a public intellectual confronted by war, questions of duty …
Challenges Facing Female Leaders Of Color In U.S. Higher Education, Fredah Mainah, Vernita Perkins
Challenges Facing Female Leaders Of Color In U.S. Higher Education, Fredah Mainah, Vernita Perkins
International Journal of African Development
Despite a myriad of challenges including the slow pace of rising to the top and the low compositional diversity in most university leadership, women of color are becoming increasingly visible in higher education leadership. This paper investigates the phenomena of the growing numbers of women of color in top positions, with the aim of debunking the myth of the invisibility of black women in leadership positions in higher education. The findings indicate that although women in the U.S. earn the majority of postsecondary degrees and 26.4% of college presidents are women, with 4.5% of them being women of color, women …
Transdisciplinarity: A Review Of Its Origins, Development, And Current Issues, Jay H. Bernstein
Transdisciplinarity: A Review Of Its Origins, Development, And Current Issues, Jay H. Bernstein
Publications and Research
Transdisciplinarity originated in a critique of the standard configuration of knowledge in disciplines in the curriculum, including moral and ethical concerns. Pronouncements about it were first voiced between the climax of government-supported science and higher education and the long retrenchment that began in the 1970s. Early work focused on questions of epistemology and the planning of future universities and educational programs. After a lull, transdisciplinarity re-emerged in the 1990s as an urgent issue relating to the solution of new, highly complex, global concerns, beginning with climate change and sustainability and extending into many areas concerning science, technology, social problems and …
Developing First-Year University Student Leadership: Leadership Development In A Short Term Service-Learning Program, Brian Thomas
Developing First-Year University Student Leadership: Leadership Development In A Short Term Service-Learning Program, Brian Thomas
PRISM: A Journal of Regional Engagement
The author examines the impact of participation in a service-learning program involving two small groups of freshmen at Saginaw Valley State University, a mid-sized public university in Michigan, on leadership activities in years following this first year experience. Based on a review of student reflection papers and a survey conducted after the program concluded, the author explores whether the service learning program influenced how students conceptualized leadership and leadership activities. Even though leadership development was not explicitly part of the program, students indicated that the program did enhance their ability to serve as leaders in other areas. While the number …

Perceptions Of Preservice Teachers’ E-Portfolios For Hiring Decisions, Molly Zhou, Marilyn M. Helms
Perceptions Of Preservice Teachers’ E-Portfolios For Hiring Decisions, Molly Zhou, Marilyn M. Helms
Georgia Educational Researcher
Preservice teachers often build E-portfolios of their work prior to graduation, but their use beyond the college classroom is not clear. To identify if E-portfolios are used during the teacher hiring process, 170 administrators from 84 (K-12) schools in eight North Georgia districts were surveyed regarding their use of E-portfolio materials. Based on the mixed methods used, E-portfolios were not strongly favored for use in decision-making. To increase their usefulness, preservice teachers should actively provide access to artifacts valued by potential employers including certification documents, classroom management plans, evidence of work with Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) students, ability to work …

Exploring Publication Productivity In The Philippines: A 10-Year Gendered Analysis Of Six Academic Disciplines, Charisse N. Reyes, Joseph Anthony L. Reyes
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
This article presents a gendered analysis exploring publication productivity in the Philippines using bibliometric data from the Web of Science. It investigates the temporal pattern of journal article publications for six disciplines, its gendered distribution, differences between disciplines, patterns of authorship and collaboration, and how much women authors contribute and participate in research collaboration. Statistical analyses revealed that although overall publication productivity increased in number from 2003 to 2012, the percentage of female contribution and participation remained almost unchanged. Significant differences were also found among disciplines using logistic regression. Implications of the results in relation to the contemporary environment of …
