Higher Education And Shifting U.S. Demographics: Need For Visible Administrative Career Paths, Professional Development, Succession Planning & Commitment To Diversity, Kristen Betts, David Urias, Keith Betts

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Higher education provides extensive opportunities for individuals seeking careers, career transition, and career advancement. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects there are an estimated 6,000 jobs in higher education administration that will need to be filled annually through 2014 (Leubsdorf, 2006). Alice Miller, a consultant with the executive-search firm Witt/Kieffer, “predicts there will be at least a 50-percent turnover among senior administrators (higher education) in the next five to 10 years” (Leubsdorf, 2006, p. Over the past 10 years, SMU has proven to be a successful experiment in Singapore’s efforts to strengthen and diversify its higher education sector. We have lived up to our promise of making a difference to our society through the graduates we have produced, through our engagement with the local …

Writing Information Literacy Assessment Plans: A Guide To Best Practice, Megan Oakleaf

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

Academic librarians throughout higher education add value to the teaching and learning missions of their institutions though information literacy instruction. To demonstrate the full impact of librarians on students in higher education, librarians need comprehensive information literacy assessment plans, composed of instructional program-level and outcome-level components, that summarize the purpose of information literacy assessment, emphasize the theoretical basis of their assessment efforts, articulate specific information literacy goals and outcomes, describe the major assessment methods and tools used to capture evidence of student learning, report assessment results, and highlight improvements made as a consequence of learning assessment.

This essay's purpose is primarily to document the creation process of the Bethesda Program After-School Media Literacy program via a curriculum inspired by critical pedagogy (e.g., Freire, Giroux, Warren). Second, it will conduct a theoretical critique of the project, utilizing the experiences of the project advisor (me). Finally, given the first two sections, this essay will offer a discussion of how this project and the pedagogical process could work in the future.

Representing The Promotional University: Undergraduate Student Recruitment Strategies In Ontario, 1997- 2007, Lindsay Carrocci Jan 2009

Representing The Promotional University: Undergraduate Student Recruitment Strategies In Ontario, 1997- 2007, Lindsay Carrocci

Digitized Theses

This thesis explores the promotional activities of five Ontario universities, bringing together scholarly work in history, education, marketing, consumer culture, semiotics, representation, and ideology to consider how institutions portray themselves to prospective undergraduate students. Visually and textually, each institution now constructs a brand, positions itself competitively, and shapes the ways in which it desires to be perceived. In promotional materials, universities attempt to balance conflicting roles as both cultivators of culture and the liberal arts, as well as centers of innovation and training in the “knowledge economy.” It is concluded that, in promotional materials, universities take the rhetorical middle ground, …

The Antioch Debacle: A Corporatist Misadventure In Higher Education, Kerstin Cornell Jan 2009

The Antioch Debacle: A Corporatist Misadventure In Higher Education, Kerstin Cornell

Digitized Theses

In June of 2007 the Antioch University Board of Trustees announced a unilateral decision to close Antioch College, a school with a 150-year legacy of cultural and educational innovation. This thesis seeks to situate this closure within the framework of current trends in higher education, and to illustrate how a radical institution fell prey to the logic of late capitalism. Through a close reading of texts produced by Antioch University, Antioch College, and U.S. media, I examine differing interpretations regarding the purpose, function, and role of institutions of higher education. Ultimately, I contend that the struggle to save the College …
