Higher Education

Community service and service learning arc long-standing touchstones in the mission and purpose of the California State University since the first campus was founded in 1857. Partnerships between local communities and CSU faculty and students make numerous goals achievable: they improve the quality of life across California, promote faculty research, and support CSU programs- all while students learn the value and satisfaction that comes from contributing to society. Policymakers and leaders of higher education have expressed renewed interest in utilizing service learning as a vehicle to instill civic values in students. All these elements have contributed to the profound advancement …

Academic Identity : Place, Race, And Gender In Academia Or Is It Really All Academic?, Robert P. Engvall Jan 2003

Academic Identity : Place, Race, And Gender In Academia Or Is It Really All Academic?, Robert P. Engvall

Justice Studies Faculty Publications

Is higher education part of the solution to the vexing problems facing the world today? How will higher education deliver on its promises in the 21st century? How will it respond to student needs and demands for a practical education at the same time it satisfies academia’s lofty vision of learning for learning’s sake? How might it reconcile these seemingly irreconciable beliefs? Who makes the decisions determining what subjects are “favored” and which are less favored, or even disfavored? This book attempts to cover all these questions because they all interconnect.

Singapore Management University Report To Stakeholders 2003 - 2004, Singapore Management University

Report to Stakeholders

From what started as an idea and then became a blueprint only a few short years ago, SMU has already developed into a university highly regarded for its quality programmes, faculty and students – not only in Singapore, but in the region and beyond.

The so-called ‘SMU experiment’ in Singapore tertiary education has been looked upon with much curiosity and generated great expectations during this time. And this year the University celebrated one of its most significant and anticipated milestones: the graduation of our first batch of students. More than just graduates, these students – now SMU alumni – are …

Christian Scholarship...For What?, Susan Felch, Joel A. Carpenter, John Hare, Elizabeth Conde-Frazier, John Polkinghorne, Tite Tienou, Marilynne Robinson, Richard Mouw

Calvin Center for Christian Scholarship

On September 27-29, 2001 Calvin College concluded its 125th anniversary celebrations with an international, interdisciplinary conference centered on the topic, "Christian Scholarship ... for What?" The title, a variation on Robert Lynds provocative address to the American social science establishment in 1938, acknowledged that faith-based scholarship has come of age. It is no longer a question of whether we will produce, publish, and read Christian scholarship. Rather, we must turn our attention to improving such scholarship and thinking deeply about the purposes to which it is directed. The conference, with its seven plenary and forty-seven concurrent sessions, attracted nearly 500 …

Seizing The Moment: Creating A Changed Society And University Through Outreach, Judith A. Ramaley Jan 2003

Seizing The Moment: Creating A Changed Society And University Through Outreach, Judith A. Ramaley

Higher Education

This conference is built on two very interesting premises; first, that university outreach can change society and second, that outreach can also change the university. What is the mechanism by which this mutual influence can occur? What does the university offer the community, and what does the community offer the university? The short answer is--the opportunity to learn in the company of others in a situation where learning has consequences.

Development Of A Curriculum Model For The Senior Adult Program At Paradise Valley Community College With An Implementation And Evaluation Plan, Sylvia Ong

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

In response to the growing number of senior adults attending Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC), the senior adult program (SAP) at PVCC, known as the “Senior College,” has increased its course offerings. The problem is that the Senior College is not maximizing its enrollment by offering courses needed and wanted by this growing market niche. The purpose of this study was to develop a curriculum model to identify such courses.

The five research questions used were (a) What are best practices in selected exemplary senior adult programs (SAPs), (b) What is the appropriate design of a senior adult curriculum model, …

Making The Transition From The Field To The Classroom: The Experiences Of Novice Health Care Instructors At Private Career Colleges, Lezlee Haroun Edd Jan 2003

Making The Transition From The Field To The Classroom: The Experiences Of Novice Health Care Instructors At Private Career Colleges, Lezlee Haroun Edd

Dissertations

Health care instructors at private career colleges are responsible for training thousands of health services workers who enter the American work force annually. The number of students seeking health care occupational training at career colleges is expected to increase significantly during the next decade because the health service industry is the fastest growing section of the United States economy. At the same time, the public education system does not have the capacity to fully accommodate the future population of students seeking the postsecondary education required for these jobs. Instructors at private career colleges are typically hired directly from professional positions …

The Development Of A Plan For The Viability Of Physical Education At Calhoun Community College With A Plan For Implementation And Evaluation, Nancy Keenum

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The current economic decline in Alabama has meant that educational institutions have had to deal with serious financial shortfalls and budget cuts. The problem facing Calhoun Community College is that funding cuts have resulted in an 80% reduction of the Physical Education department at a time when the administration has an interest in future long-term growth, physical education courses remain a viable option for students, and there is an increased awareness of the concomitant health benefits. This applied dissertation was designed to provide a comprehensive plan for the Physical Education department to meet the needs of the students by remaining …

Development, Implementation, And Evaluation Of A Strategic Planning Process For Flagler College, William T. Abare Jr

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The underlying problem for this project was that the planning process at Flagler College was more internally focused, did not take into account the external forces that could impact the institution, and did not address the strategic issues confronting the institution. The purpose of this project was to develop, implement, and evaluate a strategic planning process at Flagler.

There were five research questions. First, “What are the different approaches to strategic planning, including general principles that should guide the development and implementation of the planning process?” Second, “What is an appropriate strategic planning model or approach to strategic planning for …

Ethical Decision Making In Speech-Language Pathology: What Is The Difference In Perception Between Faculty And Second Year Graduate Students?, Kerrilyn R. Phillips

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether speech-language pathology faculty perceptions of ethical behavior are different from speech-language pathology graduate students’ perceptions of ethical behavior. Participants consisted of 34 second-year speech-language pathology graduate students and 27 faculty members from Council of Academic Accreditation (CAA) training programs in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Louisiana. All participants completed an investigator-designed instrument consisting of ethical scenarios. Results of this study indicated that significant differences between faculty and student perceptions for ethical decision-making were indicated in two of eight scenarios. The two scenarios in which significant differences were identified related to supervision and …
