Canines On Campus: Companion Animals At Postsecondary Educational Institutions, Rebecca J. Huss

Missouri Law Review

This Article focuses on the issues that arise when students wish to attend a postsecondary institution accompanied by an animal. Part II begins by analyzing federal law applicable to students bringing service and assistance animals to campus. Part III explores the use of animal-assisted activities on campus. Part IV continues with an examination of policies allowing students to have companion animals in campus housing. Part V considers concerns administrators raise about allowing animals on campus. Perceived Factors Influencing The Retention Rate Of Native American College Students: A Case Study, Tamara Louise Bergstrom Apr 2012

Perceived Factors Influencing The Retention Rate Of Native American College Students: A Case Study, Tamara Louise Bergstrom

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The number of Native Americans entering college is higher now than it has been over the past 40 years; however, the degree completion rate has been less than half that of White students. This research study was a bounded case study of Native American students enrolled in the teacher education program. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to identify the perceived factors influencing the retention rate of Native American college students. Some of the theoretical models that explain why students stay or leave an institution before earning a college degree look more toward explaining this phenomenon in a …

Motivational And Persistence Factors For Military Spouses Earning A College Degree, Lisa A. Keenan Apr 2012

Motivational And Persistence Factors For Military Spouses Earning A College Degree, Lisa A. Keenan

STEMPS Theses & Dissertations

Projections estimated that nontraditional student enrollment in post-secondary education would increase by 19% as compared to traditional student enrollments of 10% from 2006 through 2017. Adult students were less likely to complete a college degree compared to traditional students, and drop-outs cost taxpayers billions of dollars in lost taxes. Military spouses were a sub-group of nontraditional students with unique challenges and stressors due to their military lifestyle. Limited research-based literature existed on military spouses enrolled in post-secondary education. Financial incentives such as My Career Advancement Account (MyCAA) and the transferability of the Post-9/11 GI Bill enabled military spouses to participate …

The Fiscal Crisis Of The Campus: The View From California, R. Jeffrey Lustig Mar 2012

The Fiscal Crisis Of The Campus: The View From California, R. Jeffrey Lustig

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

Over the last generation, state governments have undertaken a major disinvestment in higher education. The questions raised by these funding reductions go beyond matters of crowded classrooms, dilapidated facilities, and altered pedagogies to challenge the basic function of college and university education in the United States. Will higher education continue to be the gateway to equality and provider of broad horizons for citizens, or will it be transformed into a bulwark of social privilege and narrow conveyor of vocational skills for private consumers? These are the ultimate questions posed by the funding priorities of the state legislatures in America today.

Financing Higher Education: Privatization, Resistance, And Renewal, Gerald Turkel Mar 2012

Financing Higher Education: Privatization, Resistance, And Renewal, Gerald Turkel

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

Higher education’s financial crisis is being resolved largely through a politics of privatization, changing patterns of financing that increasingly shift responsibilities to individual students and their families. The politics of privatization makes it ever more difficult for low income students to attend college and has become a major financial burden for middle income people. Beyond cost shifting, privatization has increasingly subordinated the research and educational missions of higher education to imperatives of economic growth and competitiveness. Privatization has enhanced the entrepreneurial and corporate features of universities and colleges, changing the values of higher education away from notions of common property …

State Support Of Higher Education: The Roller Coaster Plunges Downward Yet Again, William Zumeta Mar 2012

State Support Of Higher Education: The Roller Coaster Plunges Downward Yet Again, William Zumeta

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

After just a few years of solid growth in state support, public higher education faced grim times in many states in late 2008. The culprit, as usual, was an economic downturn. A burst housing market bubble, long supported by historically low interest rates and too easy credit, precipitated this downward spiral. The ground trembled under the nation’s financial system when the bubble burst; banks, in turn, severely reduced access to credit by businesses, current and would be homeowners, and even students. The U.S. Treasury Department and the Federal Reserve System responded with drastic, unprecedented actions—including slashed interest rates and bank …

Understanding The Value Of Education: A Critical Component Of A Major Social Change Effort, Susan R. Madsen, Cheryl Hanewicz, Nicolle M. Johnson, Jessica Burnham

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Receiving the benefits of postsecondary education is important to nations throughout the world. A more educated citizenry results in, among other things, less crime and poverty, increased physical and mental health of individuals, and greater economic growth (e.g., American Human Development Project, 2009; Pascarella, & Terenzini, 2005). These benefits are felt at all levels of society (i.e., individual, community, and national) and essentially define the social and economic structure of a nation. According to a Lumina Foundation (2009) report “college-attainment rates are rising in almost every industrialized or postindustrial country in the world, except the U.S.” (p.1). The graduation rate …

Inside Rankings: Limitations And Possibilities, Kerryann O’Meara, Matthew Meekins Mar 2012

Inside Rankings: Limitations And Possibilities, Kerryann O’Meara, Matthew Meekins

New England Resource Center for Higher Education Publications

Americans love ranking systems. Whether we are ranking the hottest celebrities, the top ten singles, the top chef, or the next design star, ranking seems to be built into the American psyche as a symptom of our competitive, aspirational nature, and our desire to quickly understand the value of things.

The purpose of this article is to present our critique of the main weaknesses and contributions of dominant ranking systems, to consider some of the positive and/or neutral roles that they are serving, and to offer three examples of purposes and goals of higher education we think they are not …

Faculty Senate Newsletter, March 2012, Louisiana State University And Agricultural & Mechanical College

LSU Faculty Senate Publications

Message from President: With the advent of the political season and the opening of the Louisiana Legislature, universities up, down, and across our marshy state go public. Lacking competition from football and situated in a media market that generates fewer distractions than do major metropolitan areas, universities and their troubles routinely grab frontpage or top-of-the-hour placement in journalistic productions. Loud and colorful battles, whether against budget woes or recalcitrant lawmakers or consultants with reorganization plans, draw public attention to the big issues surrounding education but also distract public attention from the more subtle causes of university distress, many of which …

Uno Campus Priorities: Charting A Clear Vision For 20/20, Uno Office Of Institutional Effectiveness Feb 2012

Uno Campus Priorities: Charting A Clear Vision For 20/20, Uno Office Of Institutional Effectiveness

Student Learning

The University of Nebraska Omaha community understands that meeting the goals of a metropolitan university of distinction with 20,000 students by the year 2020 presents both challenges and opportunities. Simultaneously increasing enrollment and educational quality will require strategic investments that leverage the campus’ current strengths and position it to take full advantage of exciting potential growth areas. Five areas were designated as key campus priorities to spearhead efforts to reach the 20/20 milestone.
The university enlisted faculty and staff committees to write “white papers” on how under take action plans for the areas of Doctoral/Graduate Research; Early Childhood/Child Welfare;Global Engagement, …
