Development Of An Alternate Curriculum For Bachelor Degree Completion Students In The Lead Program At Ohio Dominican College, William A. Vensel

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

In the Learning Enhanced Adult Degree (LEAD) program at Ohio Dominican College (ODC), a cohort based accelerated delivery format, students who complete the Associate of Science (AS.) degree had only one bachelor's degree program to choose from, the B.S. in Business Administration. Because Ohio Dominican is a bachelor degree granting institution, classified as Baccalaureate General by the Carnegie Commission, it is desirable to see all enrolled students through to the bachelor degree. The problem addressed by this practicum was that with only one degree program to choose from at the bachelor level, retention of AS. students who desired the accelerated …

University Of Nevada, Las Vegas Transmutation Research Program Annual Report 2001, Anthony Hechanova, Elizabeth Johnson, Gary Cerefice

Transmutation Research Program Reports (TRP)

The UNLV Transmutation Research Program was established in March 2001 as part of the national Advanced Accelerator Applications program to develop the technologies necessary for the ecological and economical treatment of spent nuclear fuel.

The primary role of the UNLV program in the national effort is the training of graduate and undergraduate students in nuclear engineering and other related fields to support the augmentation of the U.S. human infrastructure for transmutation technologies.

To accomplish this role, UNLV has developed the TRP with the primary focus of supporting student research into transmutation and supporting technologies. This focus is realized through the …

Inducing Voluntary Community Service In Undergraduates: The Relative Contributions Of Prior Experience, Coursework, And The Dispositions Of Empathy And Moral Development, Susan M. Hudec Jan 2002

Inducing Voluntary Community Service In Undergraduates: The Relative Contributions Of Prior Experience, Coursework, And The Dispositions Of Empathy And Moral Development, Susan M. Hudec

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

In the past twenty years, higher education has been criticized for what is perceived to be a failure to create better citizens. As a result of this criticism, a variety of pedagogical and curricula innovations have been attempted. One of these innovations is service learning, a form of experiential learning, which engages students in activities that combine fulfillment of community needs and opportunities for promotion of student learning and development (Kendall, 1990). This study hypothesized that moral development and empathy would increase over the course of the required service learning experience in the first semester of college and that required …

Development Of A Seamless Transition Program For Inmate Students At The Community College Of Southern Nevada, Theo A. Byrns

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The prison education program at the Community College of Southern Nevada (CCSN) has been in place since 1988. The Department of Prison Education offers a five-semester Associate of General Studies at facilities of incarceration in Southern Nevada. The purpose of the project was to develop a seamless transition program from a prison-based course of study to a course of study outside of the prison for community college inmate students and an implementation and evaluation plan. The seamless transition program would provide students with an opportunity to continue their higher education when released from prison.

There were six research questions in …

Analysis Of Job Satisfaction Between Full And Part Time Faculty Teaching At South Puget Sound Community College, Lee Paavola

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The problem under investigation was to determine if the perceived loss of job satisfaction by the part-time faculty was an accurate assessment of the situation. The purpose of this study was to use inferential statistics to compare the level of job satisfaction of part-time faculty to fulltime faculty currently teaching at the college. The research question to be answered was, "Are the perceived levels of job satisfaction of the part- time faculty equal to the perceived levels of job satisfaction of full-time faculty?" Validation followed these procedures. First, a review of the literature was conducted to discover research relevant to …

Development Of An Introductory Experimental/Adventure Education Course For Exercise Science Majors At Southern Connecticut State University, Patricia Ann Payne Jan 2002

Development Of An Introductory Experimental/Adventure Education Course For Exercise Science Majors At Southern Connecticut State University, Patricia Ann Payne

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

As part of the self-study process, core courses and field experiences of the Exercise Science Teacher Education Preparation Program (Exstep) were closely evaluated for their effectiveness in preparing pre-service teachers for student teaching and future employment. The problem was a lack of effective facilitation methods by the pre-service teachers in the Exstep program especially in the area of adult education principles, which include the affective domain of teaching and learning (SCSU Exstep self-study, 2000). An introductory course in experiential/adventure education would facilitate the principles of adult education, thereby enhancing students understanding of"affective" teaching methodologies, as well as philosophies, by giving …

Is "Thinking Like A Lawyer" Really What We Want To Teach?, Nancy B. Rapoport Jan 2002

Is "Thinking Like A Lawyer" Really What We Want To Teach?, Nancy B. Rapoport

Scholarly Works

This article argues that the phrase thinking like a lawyer assumes that other professions don't have their own ways of approaching problems and that law schools only need to teach how lawyers think, rather than how lawyers do what they do. It suggests that law schools should do much more than just teach law students how to think.

Development Of A Student Satisfaction Survey For The Office Of Residence Life At Virginia Wesley An College, Keith Moore

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The problem is that poor student retention rates at Virginia Wesleyan College affect the financial stability of the institution. The college has become increasingly dependent on funds generated by residential fees. Thus, the purpose of the study was to develop a survey instrument that could be utilized regularly to determine student satisfaction with the residential services and facilities at Virginia Wesleyan.

There were two research questions for this study: What are valid criteria for a survey instrument that could be used to determine student satisfaction with the services provided by the office of residence life at Virginia Wesleyan College? What …

Rates Of Adoption In A University Course Management System, David Russell Feeney

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This research focuses on diffusion of an education innovation in a large, traditional University. The web-enabled database of Temple Blackboard logs the adoption date, course ID, and course title for every Blackboard course, unobtrusively, twenty-four hours a day. Temple Blackboard serves as 4 digital approximation of the cumulative recorder pioneered by B. F. Skinner, recording more than 2800 course adoptions across 30 months, in real time. Temple Blackboard course records provide unprecedented quantity and quality …
