Human Rights, Health And The Environment, David Gillespie Jan 2004

Human Rights, Health And The Environment, David Gillespie

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Environmental health and human rights are inextricably linked. According to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 3, “Everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security of person.” Given that the earth is the source of the basic necessities of human life, any discussion about health and human rights must be attentive to its inherent environmental aspects. International conventions, documents and reports such as Agenda 21 (1992) and The Draft Declaration of Human Rights and the Environment (1994) have expressly argued for such an integrated approach. In response, a plethora of works over the past decade have expanded the …

Cavities On The Cob: Dental Health And The Agricultural Transition In Sonora, Mexico, James Thomas Watson Jan 2004

Cavities On The Cob: Dental Health And The Agricultural Transition In Sonora, Mexico, James Thomas Watson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This research uses a predictive model based on dental health to test the hypothesis that maize dependence gradually increased among human groups in the Sonoran Desert over the course of the Early Agricultural period (1500 B.C.--A.D. 200). The hypothesis is tested by recording a suite of ten dental observations that correlate with this fundamental change in subsistence on a sample of 246 prehistoric human skeletons dating to the Early Agricultural period recovered from La Playa (SON F:10:3), Sonora, Mexico. The sample is evenly distributed among demographic variables, burial treatments, and location within the site. Erosion of the burials, however, restricted …

The Right To Health And The Nevirapine Case In South Africa, George J. Annas Jan 2003

The Right To Health And The Nevirapine Case In South Africa, George J. Annas

Faculty Scholarship

Thanks to activists in South Africa, the right to health as a human right has returned to the international stage, just as it was being displaced by economists who see health through the prism of a globalized economy and by politicians who see it as an issue of national security or charity. The current post-apartheid debate in South Africa is not about race but about health, and in this context, the court victory by AIDS activists in the nevirapine case has been termed not only, as stated in one British newspaper, “the greatest defeat for [President Thabo] Mbeki's government” but …

A Spurious Solution To A Genuine Problem: An In-Depth Look At The 1848 Import Drugs Act, Angela Walch Jan 2002

A Spurious Solution To A Genuine Problem: An In-Depth Look At The 1848 Import Drugs Act, Angela Walch

Faculty Articles

The Import Drugs Act has been relatively ignored by the academic community, and is most often relegated to a passing reference in a footnote. Yet the Act represents an important step in our nation's creation of a safe supply of drugs, and thus deserves some attention. In this paper, I give the Act that attention, and seek to place it in an historical context. In Chapter 1, I describe how Congressional action was prompted by medical conditions during the Mexican War and the belief that American soldiers were being given adulterated drugs. Chapter 2 describes the involvement of the professional …

Research outputs pre 2011

The papers were presented originally at the 1999 Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP). Reflecting the importance that the RACP attaches to the issue, Indigenous health was a major theme of the ASM. Six sessions over two days were devoted to various aspects of Indigenous health - the general policy context, lessons from the experiences of Indigenous peoples internationally, consideration of specific health services initiatives, and detailed examination of individual health topics...

On Being A Happy, Healthy, And Ethical Member Of An Unhappy, Unhealthy, And Unethical Profession, Patrick J. Schiltz

Vanderbilt Law Review

Dear Law Student: I have good news and bad news. The bad news is that the profession that you are about to enter is one of the most unhappy and unhealthy on the face of the earth--and, in the view of many, one of the most unethical. The good news is that you can join this profession and still be happy, healthy, and ethical. I am writing to tell you how. I. THE WELL-BEING OF LAWYERS Lawyers play an enormously important role in our society. "It is the lawyers who run our civilization for us-our governments, our business, our private …

A Scientific Conception Of Animal Welfare That Reflects Ethical Concerns, D. Fraser, D. M. Weary, E. A. Pajor, B. N. Milligan Jan 1997

A Scientific Conception Of Animal Welfare That Reflects Ethical Concerns, D. Fraser, D. M. Weary, E. A. Pajor, B. N. Milligan

Ethics and Animal Welfare Collection

Scientific research on 'animal welfare' began because of ethical concerns over the quality of life of animals, and the public looks to animal welfare research for guidance regarding these concerns. The conception of animal welfare used by scientists must relate closely to these ethical concerns if the orientation of the research and the interpretation of the findings is to address them successfully.

At least three overlapping ethical concerns are commonly expressed regarding the quality of life of animals: (1) that animals should lead natural lives through the development and use of their natural adaptations and capabilities, (2) that animals should …

The Relationship Between Health Beliefs And Use Of Child Car Safety Restraints Among Mothers Of Young Children, Stacy Lynn Leifried Jan 1997

The Relationship Between Health Beliefs And Use Of Child Car Safety Restraints Among Mothers Of Young Children, Stacy Lynn Leifried

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Though preventable, injuries resulting from motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death and disability in childhood. The literature supports the efficacy of child car safety restraints, yet despite this fact, nonuse rates remain high. Using the Health Belief Model, the purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to examine the relationship between health beliefs, cues to action, selected demographics, and mothers' use of child car safety restraints among low income mothers of children less than five years of age; Locus of control, maternal seatbelt use, and child's age were demonstrated to be significant predictors of child car safety …

Health Patterns Of Nurses Who Smoke, John Louis Yuhos Jan 1997

Health Patterns Of Nurses Who Smoke, John Louis Yuhos

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This descriptive comparative study examined the usefulness of Pender's (1996) Health Promotion Model to explain the occurrence and differences of health-promoting behavior between nurses who smoke and nurses who do not. A convenience sample of 283 nurses completed two assessment instruments, the Health-Promoting Life-Style Profile (HPLP-II) and the Self-Rated Abilities for Health Practices Scale. Significant differences were found in the mean scores on subscales of the HPLP-II and the Self-Rated Abilities for Health Practices Scale between nurses who smoke and those who do not. A posteriori comparisons of three groups of nurses; current smoking nurses, former smoking nurses and never …

Cd40-Cd40 Ligand Interactions In Experimental Allergic Encephalomyelitis And Multiple Sclerosis., Koen Gerritse, Jon D. Laman, Randolph J. Noelle, Alejandro Aruffo Mar 1996

Cd40-Cd40 Ligand Interactions In Experimental Allergic Encephalomyelitis And Multiple Sclerosis., Koen Gerritse, Jon D. Laman, Randolph J. Noelle, Alejandro Aruffo

Dartmouth Scholarship

We investigated the role of CD40-CD40 ligand (CD40L) interactions in multiple sclerosis (MS) and experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE). Activated helper T cells expressing CD40L (gp39) surface protein were found in MS patient brain sections, but not in brain tissue sections of normal controls or patients with other neurological disease. CD40L-positive cells were co-localized with CD40-bearing cells in active lesions (perivascular infiltrates). Most of these CD40-bearing cells proved to be of the monocytic lineage (macrophages or microglial cells), and relatively few were B cells. To functionally evaluate CD40-CD40L interactions, EAE was elicited in mice by means of proteolipid-peptide immunization. Treatment with …

Health Of The Older African-American Population, Dana M. Hardy Jan 1996

Health Of The Older African-American Population, Dana M. Hardy

Theses

Health promotion and disease prevention has made a major impact in the United States in the past 20 years. However in terms of disease and risk behavior minority groups in this country are not uniformly disadvantaged. African - Americans had age - adjusted mortality rates well above the rates of white Americans, whereas Hispanic Americans have rates that are comparable to white Americans. Asians and Pacific Islanders and American Indians and Alaska Natives have mortality rates lower than white Americans.

The challenge for chronic disease prevention among minority groups is to get the attention of church and other community leaders …

Unblinded Mandatory Hiv Screening Of Newborns: Care Or Coercion?, Linda Farber Post Aug 1994

Unblinded Mandatory Hiv Screening Of Newborns: Care Or Coercion?, Linda Farber Post

Cardozo Law Review

The image of mother and child is perhaps the most universal symbol of love and protection. The concept of mother and sick child evokes instant compassion and the desire to do somethinganything-to help the mother help her baby. When the disease is both incurable and fatal, there is the expectation that the combined efforts of the state and the medical community will be mobilized to intervene on behalf of those who are afflicted. This Note looks at one such attempt and considers, not the good intentions that prompted it, but the legal ramifications of its implementation.

Stress And Health In 1st-Year Law Students: Women Fare Worse, Daniel N. Mcintosh, Julie Keywell, Alan Reifman, Phoebe C. Ellsworth

Articles

The social and psychological consequences of being a female law student may include greater stress and worse health than that experienced by male students. First-year law students at a major state university were surveyed about their physical and psychological health prior to, in the middle of, and at the end of the school year. They were also asked about specific sources of strain (e.g., grades, time pressure) at mid-year. Relative to men, women reported greater strain due to sexism, lack of free time, and lack of time to spend with one’s spouse/partner. Women also displayed more depression and physical symptoms …
