Assessing Students' Attitudes Towards Geography In A Problem-Based Learning Environment, Andrew Jasper Quain
Assessing Students' Attitudes Towards Geography In A Problem-Based Learning Environment, Andrew Jasper Quain
Theses and Dissertations
Problem-based learning is an instructional strategy that is a growing trend in geographic education at all levels. The benefits of problem-based learning and how it improves students' content knowledge are well established in the literature. However, a gap in the literature exists in regards to the impact problem-based learning has on students' attitudes towards geography. This study focused on determining if high school students' attitudes towards geography improved after enrollment in a course taught with problem-based learning instruction. The study assessed other factors, such as preference for group work and problem-solving efficacy, which are associated with problem-based learning instruction. The …
Caves As Anti-Places: Robert Penn Warren’S The Cave And Cormac Mccarthy’S Child Of God, Ralph Crane, Lisa Fletcher
Caves As Anti-Places: Robert Penn Warren’S The Cave And Cormac Mccarthy’S Child Of God, Ralph Crane, Lisa Fletcher
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
In Robert Penn Warren's poem "Speleology," a young boy turns off his flashlight deep in a cave and knows "darkness and depth and no Time." This poem's powerful imagery of the spatial otherness of caves is the starting point for this article, which argues that analyzing the literary representation of natural subterranean voids requires a careful re-theorisation of the dynamic relations of space and place. The difficult question of how meaning comes to be attached to a particular space, thus transforming it into place, is central to Robert Penn Warren's The Cave and Cormac McCarthy’s Child of God, both …

Physical Geography [9th Grade], Meghan Harrington, Kyle Anderson
Understanding by Design: Complete Collection
This unit is designed to give 9th grade World Geography students a foundational understanding of physical geography, then have the students apply that knowledge to explore the essential questions: “How does the physical world shape societies?” and “In what ways does the physical geography of a region limit or enhance a society?”. Students will investigate physical features, extreme weather, the four spheres, climate zones, and climate regions to understand the diversity of the earth’s geography. This unit will culminate in students creating their own society based on the assignment of random physical features, latitude, and extreme weather. For this summative …

State Drought Programs And Plans: Survey Of The Western United States, Matthew M. Fontaine, Anne C. Steinemann, Michael Hayes
State Drought Programs And Plans: Survey Of The Western United States, Matthew M. Fontaine, Anne C. Steinemann, Michael Hayes
National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
Drought preparedness programs are considered a primary defense against drought hazards. This article investigates state drought programs in the western United States, including a review of drought plans and interviews with state drought officials. While nearly all states have developed drought plans and larger drought programs, the scope and depth of these programs vary widely. State programs and plans typically address monitoring, declaration and response, and communication and coordination. Yet few states conduct postdrought assessments or impact and risk assessments. Resources tend to be allocated more for drought response than mitigation. Officials emphasized not only the importance of available monitoring …
Map Facts: Disability In Rural America, Tom Seekins Ph.D., Lillie Greiman, University Of Montana Rural Institute
Map Facts: Disability In Rural America, Tom Seekins Ph.D., Lillie Greiman, University Of Montana Rural Institute
Independent Living and Community Participation
Newly released data on disability in America show that the prevalence of impairments leading to disability is significantly higher in non-metropolitan counties (16.5%) than in metropolitan counties (13.4%). The U.S. Census Bureau recently updated the data about disability in small rural areas. This report provides a new glimpse at the heart of rural America for the first time in 13 years. These data fill a gap that has left policy makers and program planners in the dark and has meant that many decisions were made without adequate understanding of the demographics of rural people with disabilities. For example, it is …

Charting The Legal Geography Of Non-International Armed Conflict, Michael N. Schmitt
Charting The Legal Geography Of Non-International Armed Conflict, Michael N. Schmitt
International Law Studies
This article examines the geographical reach of international humanitarian law (law of armed conflict), particularly during armed conflicts between States and non-State organized armed groups. The issue is operationally critical, since to the extent that IHL applies, practices which are lawful during armed conflicts, such as status-based targeting, may be employed. When IHL does not apply, human rights obligations shouldered by the State govern the conduct of its military operations. The article surveys the various approaches to the the legal geography of non-international armed conflict, arguing that an interpretation by which IHL is not geographically restricted is the most supportable.

Henry's Big Adventure, Kelly Rippeth
Henry's Big Adventure, Kelly Rippeth
Honors Projects
I have written and illustrated a children’s book as well as planned a selection of lesson plans that can be used in addition to the book titled Henry’s BIG Adventure. Illustrated children’s books are very valuable to the development of children by aiding in comprehension. According to Mary Renck Jalongo, author of Young Children and Picture Books, children can learn so much from reading stories, even fiction ones. Henry’s BIG Adventure centers on a young boy who finds an old photo album with pictures of several places he has never been before. The album leads him on a big …

Habitat-Specific Density And Diet Of Rapidly Expanding Invasive Red Lionfish, Pterois Volitans,, Populations In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Kristen A. Dahl, William F. Patterson Iii
C-IMAGE Publications
Invasive Indo-Pacific red lionfish, Pterois volitans, were first reported in the northern Gulf of Mexico (nGOM) in summer 2010. To examine potential impacts on native reef fish communities, lionfish density and size distributions were estimated from fall 2010 to fall 2013 with a remotely operated vehicle at natural (n = 16) and artificial (n = 22) reef sites. Lionfish (n = 934) also were sampled via spearfishing to examine effects of habitat type, season, and fish size on their diet and trophic ecology. There was an exponential increase in lionfish density at both natural and artificial reefs over the study …
Perceptions Of Climate Change And Vulnerability In Upper Svaneti, South Caucasus, Georgia, Peter Alexandrovich Bordokoff
Perceptions Of Climate Change And Vulnerability In Upper Svaneti, South Caucasus, Georgia, Peter Alexandrovich Bordokoff
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Incorporating localized perceptions of climatic impacts to livelihoods and traditions is critical to shaping effective adaptive climate change and disaster risk reduction strategies in the Greater Caucasus Mountains of Georgia. This study uses a phenomenological research framework to investigate the lived experience of climate and the associated impacts of its change in Upper Svaneti. In addition, a vulnerability assessment examines the social and environmental aspects of disasters, including localized perceptions. Results are drawn from eight months of field research conducted from 2012-2013. Multiple in-depth qualitative methods were implemented to generate rich descriptive data, giving way to the roles that environmental …

In recent decades, many marine populations have experienced major declines in abundance, but we still know little about where management interventions may help protect the highest levels of marine biodiversity. We used modeled spatial distribution data for nearly 12,500 species to quantify global patterns of species richness and two measures of endemism. By combining these data with spatial information on cumulative human impacts, we identified priority areas where marine biodiversity is most and least impacted by human activities, both within Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) and Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ). Our analyses highlighted places that are both accepted priorities for …
Justice And Immigrant Latino Recreation Geography In Cache Valley, Utah, Jodie Madsen, Claudia Radel, Joanna Endter-Wada
Justice And Immigrant Latino Recreation Geography In Cache Valley, Utah, Jodie Madsen, Claudia Radel, Joanna Endter-Wada
Environment and Society Faculty Publications
Latinos are the largest U.S. non-mainstreamed ethnic group, and social and environmental justice considerations dictate recreation professionals and researchers meet their recreation needs. This study reconceptualizes this diverse group’s recreation patterns, looking at where immigrant Latino individuals in Cache Valley, Utah do recreate rather than where they do not. Through qualitative interviews and interactive mapping, thirty participants discussed what recreation means to them and explained their recreation site choices. Findings suggest that recreation as an activity done outside the home, for fun with others, leads participants to seek spaces with certain characteristics. Reconceiving recreation more broadly and framing it from …

Predictors Of Grandparental Investment Decisions In Contemporary Europe: Biological Relatedness And Beyond, David A. Coall, Sonja Hilbrand, Ralph Hertwig
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Across human cultures, grandparents make a valued contribution to the health of their families and communities. Moreover, evidence is gathering that grandparents have a positive impact on the development of grandchildren in contemporary industrialized societies. A broad range of factors that influence the likelihood grandparents will invest in their grandchildren has been explored by disciplines as diverse as sociology, economics, psychology and evolutionary biology. To progress toward an encompassing framework, this study will include biological relatedness between grandparents and grandchildren, a factor central to some discipline's theoretical frameworks (e.g., evolutionary biology), next to a wide range of other factors in …
Restoring Cultural Capital Through Preservation In The Holy Cross Historic District, Jennifer Ann Hay
Restoring Cultural Capital Through Preservation In The Holy Cross Historic District, Jennifer Ann Hay
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This research analyses the social construction of a neighborhood’s history through the architectural narrative visible in its housing stock, critically engaging with modern practices of evaluation and interpretation of historic significance espoused by preservationists. Physical manifestations of the application of the National Historic Preservation Act and local regulations, in conjunction with efforts of preservationists as agents of recovery targeting the Holy Cross Historic District in New Orleans after the hazard events of 2005 reveal new and altered perceptions of the neighborhood through changes in space and structure. Methods include quantitative analysis of property values and demographics, (economic capital), and documenting …

A Ten-Year Record Of Supraglacial Lake Evolution And Rapid Drainage In West Greenland Using An Automated Processing Algorithm For Multispectral Imagery, B. F. Morriss, R. L. Hawley, J. W. Chipman, L. C. Andrews
Dartmouth Scholarship
The rapid drainage of supraglacial lakes introduces large pulses of meltwater to the subglacial environment and creates moulins, surface-to-bed conduits for future melt. Introduction of water to the subglacial system has been shown to affect ice flow, and modeling suggests that variability in water supply and delivery to the subsurface play an important role in the development of the subglacial hydrologic system and its ability to enhance or mitigate ice flow. We developed a fully automated method for tracking meltwater and rapid drainages in large (> 0.125 km2) perennial lakes and applied it to a 10 yr time …
