Historically, law has been a male-dominated profession; only recently has it become possible to consider the woman's experience and perspective with respect to law practice generally and negotiation practice in particular. This paper addresses two gender-related issues: first, are there identifiable gender-related distinctions in the negotiating behavior of attorneys? Second, if there are discoverable differences, are they attributable to ethical perspectives linked to gender? In addressing these questions, this article begins by reviewing the literature on feminist theory, moral development, and negotiation theory. These themes are tied together in a review of the small but growing literature on negotiation ethics. …

When Henry Sullivan opened the question of the insight that the writings of Jacques Lacan could bring to the comedia, he came somewhat early on to Tirso's magisterial comedia de enredo [comedy of intrigue and deception], Don Gil de las calzas verdes. As with most things Lacanian, his paper, "The Sexual Ambiguities of Tirso de Molina's Don Gil de las calzas verdes," is not easily accessible, having been published in the Proceedings of the Third Annual Golden Age Drama Symposium in El Paso, Texas. aking All the Difference, by Martha Minow, promised to render the multiple differences of race, gender, disability, and orientation, part of a whole discourse on difference. In this, the book is a success. Yet, the contradiction which Minow’s ideas play with her genre is bothersome. It is not that her way of writing is not valuable. Minow is remarkably lucid. But what she names at the outset—a relational approach, with a sensitivity to boundaries—she does not deliver. That conundrum, and why it seems to be—but is not—the unavoidable dilemma of the gifted female scholar in law today, is worth investigating.

Videomicroscopic Comparison Of Bull Sperm And Leukocyte Chromosome Areas As Related To Gender, J. E. Chandler, V. Tirado, R. W. Adkinson

Chromosomal areas from metaphase spreads of male bovine leukocytes were digitized and sex chromosomes identified using videomicroscopy. Autosomal areas were ranked in descending order within a cell and assigned to two categories based on alternating rank. X and Y chromosome areas were assigned to respective categories. Areas were divided by 4 to make their sum equivalent to sperm DNA content. Data were analyzed before and after inclusion of sex chromosomal areas. Before X and Y inclusion, rank contributed to difference in chromosomal areas. Rank by category interaction and category effects did not contribute to area variation. After X and Y …

During the 1980s a handful of state judges either held or opined in dicta what must be incontrovertible to the feminist community, as well as to most progressive legal advocates and academics: the so-called marital rape exemption, whether statutory or common law in origin, constitutes a denial of a married woman's constitutional right to equal protection under the law. Indeed, a more obvious denial of equal protection is difficult to imagine: the marital rape exemption denies married women protection against violent crime solely on the basis of gender and marital status. The relationship of men in pheminism is an impossible one. On the one hand, the "proposition" of the preposition is intrusive; it signifies break and enter with all the multiple meanings that this entails, from virginal to criminal reprochment. On the other hand, the “preposition" of the proposition is an illusionary one, both in its flirtatious invitation to men and in its very non-existence of being, for there is no inside nor outside. Written by a feminist (Virginia Woolf), for a bisexual (Vita Sackville-West), about an androgyne (Orlando), the novel Orlando would seem to be the quintessential feminist text. And that, indeed, is what it is in danger of becoming, just as Woolf is in danger of becoming the acclaimed Mother of Us All. In promoting Virginia Woolf's Orlando as a feminist work, feminist critics have picked the right text, but for the wrong reasons. Gender Differences In Mathematics Achievement, Denise D'Antonio

Current research on gender differences in mathematics achievement is summarized. A cross-cultural study of sex differences in attitudes towards mathematics (confidence, individuality and liking) and in attributional patterns in mathematics (ability, effort, task, environment/luck) included American sixth graders (n=155, m=70, f=85) and British 11-12 year olds (n=42, m=18, f=24). Comparisons based on responses to a two-part survey concerning sex of student, sex of teacher, nationality, and achievement level were made. Significant results were obtained in the following categories concerning attitudes about mathematics. American female students with a female teacher liked mathematics more than American female students with a male teacher …

Parental Investment And Elite Family Structure In Preindustrial States: A Case Study Of Late Medieval-Early Modern Portuguese Genealogies, James L. Boone

In this paper I examine the idea that patriarchal family structure among elites in stratified societies originates as a form of parental investment favoring male children. Patriliny and restricted inheritance among 15th- and 16th-century Portuguese nobility are analyzed as reproductive strategies aimed at maximizing lineage survival and posterity in the face of high mortality. Demographic data derived from genealogies show that among the high nobility, males out reproduce females,whereas among the lower nobility, females outreproduced males, and that the tendency to concentrate investment in male offspring correspondingly increases with status. This article explores the “gender model” of job research instruments that are based on the Holland Occupational Classification scheme. The six Holland “environments” constitute a ubiquitous base for tests and measures in career counseling and research. Analysis of the 1973 Quality of Employment Survey provides evidence that the Holland Classification scheme replicates the segmentation of women into certain occupations that generate low pay, even after controlling for worker education, job tenure, and age. Comparable data for male wage earners show a significant segregation away from low-income, predominantly female occupations. Thus the Holland occupational scheme and the instruments based upon it …

There is a current debate in social science literature, in Marxist theory, and in Feminist theory on the role of gender in affecting the form of inequality.
