Young Adolescents’ Gender-, Ethnicity-, And Popularity-Based Social Schemas Of Aggressive Behavior, Katherine H. Clemans, Julia A. Graber
Young Adolescents’ Gender-, Ethnicity-, And Popularity-Based Social Schemas Of Aggressive Behavior, Katherine H. Clemans, Julia A. Graber
Psychology: Faculty Publications
Social schemas can influence the perception and recollection of others’ behavior and may create biases in the reporting of social events. This study investigated young adolescents’ (N = 317) gender-, ethnicity-, and popularity-based social schemas of overtly and relationally aggressive behavior. Results indicated that participants associated overt aggression with being male and African American and relational aggression with being female. In addition, participants associated all types of aggression with high perceived popularity. The strength of endorsement of several subscales differed significantly as a function of raters’ gender and ethnicity. Findings highlight the importance of understanding how aggression-related social schemas may …

“The World Broke In Two”: The Gendered Experience Of Trauma And Fractured Civilian Identity In Post-World War I Literature, Erin Cheatham
“The World Broke In Two”: The Gendered Experience Of Trauma And Fractured Civilian Identity In Post-World War I Literature, Erin Cheatham
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This thesis examines the complexities of civilian identity and the crisis of gender in twentieth century fiction produced after World War I. Of central concern are four novels written by prominent women authors, novels that deal with themes of trauma, violence, and shifting gender roles in a post-war society: Rebecca West’s The Return of the Soldier, Willa Cather’s The Professor’s House, and Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway and Jacob’s Room. Although these novels do not directly portray the battlefield experiences of war, I argue that, at their core, they are “war novels” in the fullest sense, concerned with the …

How Do They Do It? Legislators As Leaders: A Quantitative Study Of The Influencers Of Legistators' Decision-Making, Alison J. Battaglia
Student Scholarship
The purpose of this research is to explore quantitatively how legislator's decisions are influenced and values impact their decisions. Specifically, we examined how religious values, financial contributions and reach or impact of the policy issue affect both leadership decision-making performance and decision-making confidence and leadership attributes. Data was collected as part of an electronic survey and included current and former state and federal legislators from both the, Democratic and Republican parties. Results show that religion impacted leadership decision-making performance and decision-making leadership attributes. Additionally, as participants scored higher on the religion scale, they tended to be more confident in their …
Mapping Borderlands Horror: Tales In Terror, Trauma, And Latinx Immigrant Experiences In Recent Fiction, Cynthia Saldivar
Mapping Borderlands Horror: Tales In Terror, Trauma, And Latinx Immigrant Experiences In Recent Fiction, Cynthia Saldivar
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores how Chicana/o cultural producers redeploy conventions of horror in order to explore the lived experiences of Latinx, particularly in South Texas. To do so, I will examine texts such as Sandra Cisneros's classic 1992 short story "Woman Hollering Creek," Terri de la Peña’s 1996 short story “Refugio” and Christopher Carmona's award-winning 2015 short story "Strange Leaves" and Josefina Lopez’s 2011 play “Detained in the Desert” through the lens of domestic horror. This thesis will demonstrate how the horrific is "differential," that is, how what we consider horrific is thoroughly racialized, gendered, classed, and sexualized. The thesis will …
Gender In Stem: An Intersectional And Interdisciplinary Feminist Ethnography, Michelle Chouinard
Gender In Stem: An Intersectional And Interdisciplinary Feminist Ethnography, Michelle Chouinard
Honors College Theses
While contextualizing the history of women in educational spheres, it is no surprise to learn that women have faced significant obstacles in sciences and mathematics since the inception of higher education. In her revolutionary challenge of patriarchal historical narratives surrounding knowledge production, historian Londa Schiebinger’s Has Feminism Changed Science? (1999) demonstrates that women have long been influential in the sciences. Christine de Pizan was documenting contributions made by women to the arts and sciences beginning in 1405; however, widespread acknowledgement of women in the sciences did not appear until the dawn of the 20th century, around the time of the …
An Impact Study Of Women In U.S. Super Bowl Beer Commercials, 2011-2015, Elizabeth Robinson
An Impact Study Of Women In U.S. Super Bowl Beer Commercials, 2011-2015, Elizabeth Robinson
Research Papers
The beer industry is one of the largest moneymaking industries in the U.S., and is one that spends a significant amount of money on advertising expenditures. While beer companies traditionally target men in their advertisements, particularly those aired during televised sporting events, the female audience is practically ignored, although it is one that is growing in importance due to the increase in women as beer drinkers and sports fans.
The objectives of this study are to: (1) determine the extent to which females are targeted as potential consumers in beer advertising aired during Super Bowl broadcasts from 2011-2015; (2) examine …
Media Literacy Curriculum For The Adolescent Young Adult Classroom, Leah Oliver
Media Literacy Curriculum For The Adolescent Young Adult Classroom, Leah Oliver
Honors Projects
The American public education system has been lagging behind other developed nations in its implementation of media literacy curricula throughout all grade levels. As mass media outlets (including television, film, magazines, advertisements, and video games) become more prevalent in our society, the accompanying job market and the everyday use of electronic media platforms require high school and college graduates to have at least a basic understanding of how media can be used to disseminate information and to buy and sell products. Moreover, research studies in the field suggest that exposure to popular culture mass media can greatly influence teens’ self-esteem, …
Gender, Media, And The White House: An Examination Of Gender In The Media Coverage Of Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, And Ted Cruz In The 2016 Elections, Rose E. Allen
Political Science Honors Projects
This paper examines the role of gender in the media coverage of Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and Ted Cruz in the 2016 election cycle. Analyzing newspaper articles, Twitter pages, and campaign advertisements, I compare the media coverage of these three candidates to their own campaign messages. My findings reveal that Clinton received more personal coverage than Sanders or Cruz, despite less of an emphasis on personal characteristics in her own campaign materials. I also find that Clinton received less coverage on “feminine issues” such as women’s health and paid family leave, despite her own campaign’s focus on these issues. I …

Implicit Self-Esteem As A Potential Link Between Gender Identity Threat In Males And Attitudes Towards Women In Managerial Positions, Marwa Makhlouf, Noha Ezz El-Din Fikry, Hana Hazem Hafiz, Ingy Farweez
Implicit Self-Esteem As A Potential Link Between Gender Identity Threat In Males And Attitudes Towards Women In Managerial Positions, Marwa Makhlouf, Noha Ezz El-Din Fikry, Hana Hazem Hafiz, Ingy Farweez
The Undergraduate Research Journal
This experiment investigated the effects of male gender threat on implicit self-esteem, and how that in turn may influence prejudices towards women in managerial positions. The Self-Esteem Implicit Association Test (IAT) was administered to 82 male undergraduate students prior to and after a gender threat intervention using false results on a measure of gender roles. After the gender threat intervention and IAT, respondents answered the Women as Managers Scale. Results showed that participants who received the gender threat intervention did not show significant differences in attitudes toward women in managerial positions compared to participants who were randomly assigned to the …

Virginity And Guilt Differences Between Men And Women, Caitlin M. Lipman, Alexis J. Moore
Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research
In this research, the authors measured the levels of sexual guilt between two groups of people on multiple levels, virgins and nonvirgins, by gender. The differences between men and women when it comes to virginity will also be studied. Based on the sample size of college students, N = 364. College students (N=364) completed a 34-item online survey of questions that measure guilt levels. Ten out of the twenty questions are demographic questions, such as: age, ethnicity, religion, year, etc. The other questions were a combination of Likert scaled questions and open ended responses. We predicted that females will produce …
Gender As A Socially Constructed Phenomenon, Jamie Smith
Gender As A Socially Constructed Phenomenon, Jamie Smith
SEWSA 2016 Intersectionality in the New Millennium: An Assessment of Culture, Power, and Society
In the historical and social landscape that currently exists in America, the concept of gender, and especially the concept of women, has been created and enforced through societal expectations. From essentialism in the past, social and psychological theory has evolved to consider the social impact on gender construction. Foucault’s prison theory, Berger’s theory of surveying, and Mulvey’s theory of the Male Gaze can be used to show that gender, though it used to be viewed as inherent to a person’s identity, is actually a process of social conditioning. Women are shaped by society but continue to follow their roles because …

Revealing Gender Bias: An Experiential Exercise, Linda M. Dunn-Jensen, Scott Jensen, Mikelle A. Calhoun, Katherine C. Ryan
Organization Management Journal
Stereotyping and biases continue to be a problem in many facets of society. Understanding how biases may affect recruitment and retention of employees has become a priority issue for companies, not only from an image perspective but also from a firm performance perspective, since both research and industry experience have shown that diverse teams generate better results. The need to address these issues, particularly with students who will become leaders in organizations, remains a priority in business education. In this article, we present an experiential activity that management instructors can use to help students understand and appreciate the reality and …
An Analysis Of Diversity In Nonhuman Animal Rights Media, Corey Lee Wrenn
An Analysis Of Diversity In Nonhuman Animal Rights Media, Corey Lee Wrenn
Diversity and Social Movements Collection
Lack of diversity in the ranks as well as a failure to resonate with disadvantaged groups and other anti-oppression movements has been cited as one important barrier to the American Nonhuman Animal rights movement’s success (Kymlicka and Donaldson 2013). It is possible that social movements are actively inhibiting diversity in the ranks and audience by producing literature that reflects a narrow activist identity. This article creates a platform from which these larger issues can be explored by investigating the actual demographic representations present in a small sample of popular media sources produced by the movement for other animals. A content …

An Analysis Of Women’S Access To Acute Opioid Detoxification Services In Maine: Identifying The Barriers To Treatment, Karen E. Conley
Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations
The lack of treatment facilities and services for opioid use disorder in Maine, combined with an increased prevalence of addiction, creates a potential for health inequity between men and women that may be intensified by barriers in access to care. This capstone study utilized detoxification screening inquiry forms and data obtained from the Milestone Foundation’s acute opioid detoxification program to assess and categorize barriers to access by gender. A barriers model was developed based on existing literature and was to identify potential associations among and between the known barriers to accessing treatment. Barriers were described as internally or externally based, …
It Wants To Get Inside Of You: Interrogating Representations Of Women In Possession Films, Ellena R. Sweet
It Wants To Get Inside Of You: Interrogating Representations Of Women In Possession Films, Ellena R. Sweet
Pell Scholars and Senior Theses
As a genre that serves to unnerve its viewers, horror often operates outside of the formal codes and narrative tropes of mainstream cinema, making it conducive to portrayals that transcend societal constructs of race, class, and gender. While numerous scholars argue that horror films offer progressive depictions of masculinity and femininity, some accuse them of perpetuating a patriarchal form by disempowering, objectifying, and punishing female characters. This thesis employed textual analysis to scrutinize depictions of femininity and its association with supernatural victimization in The Exorcist and The Conjuring by examining representational choices in the context of the films cultural and …

Transgressing Gender Normativity Through Gender Identity Development: Exploring Transgender, Non-Conforming, And Non-Binary Identities Of College Students, Enrique Tejada Iii
Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This study situates current gender social constructions as harmful, inhibitive, and problematic, especially for those that transgress gender boundaries and do not align with their gender assigned at birth. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to critically challenge and deconstruct the social construct of gender and its norms both within and outside of a college campus. This study works to achieve this purpose and answer research questions through careful analysis of the different gender journeys of three separate gender-diverse individuals. These participants’ stories are shared in a case-study format to recognize how each individual uniquely and personally formed their …
The Ghosts Of Infertility: Haunted By The Realities Of Reproductive Death, Amanda E. Garrison Phd
The Ghosts Of Infertility: Haunted By The Realities Of Reproductive Death, Amanda E. Garrison Phd
The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology
The use of graphics in academic research is a relatively underexplored and underutilized medium through which social science researcher s can communicate and share the knowledge they’ve acquired with larger audiences. The graphic article attempts to disseminate the findings of sociological research to non-academic audiences in an effort to make more public and more accessible the information intended to help regular people in everyday life. This article will use autoethnography in addition to critical discourse analysis to expose the connections between the ways in which female-bodied people experience psycho-medical discourses in everyday interaction, and in more institutionalized settings (i.e. doctor’s …

Introduction: Global Perspectives On Marriage, Crisis, And Nation. Domestic Tensions, National Anxieties: Global Perspectives On Marriage, Crisis, And Nation, Hanan Kholoussy, Kristin Celello
Faculty Book Chapters
The introduction argues that studying marriage in times of crisis provides an important lens onto the relationship between the institution and the nation. It explores the metaphorical links between marriage and the nation and the concrete ways in which the modern state has intervened in the private, marital lives of its citizens. The introduction highlights key points of comparison, notably gender, the tension between modernity and tradition, and the line between public and private. It explains why the modern period is a particularly eventful era to examine due to the rise of the modern nation-state, the peak of anticolonial struggles …

Creating A Lifeline Back To Books For Adolescent Boys Through Multimedia Enhanced Read-Alouds, Jana Wilkening Mcnally
Dissertations
Due to a growing concern regarding the reading motivation levels of adolescent males, educators have been encouraged to broaden their definition of literacy beyond the traditional fiction novel. This study sought to target the reading motivation levels of unmotivated adolescent boys through the use of a multimedia-enhanced read aloud (MERA). Research questions included: (a) How does the implementation of the MERA impact the reading motivation of adolescent male students? (b) How does the implementation of the MERA impact the reading motivation of unmotivated adolescent male students? (c) How does the implementation of the MERA impact the reading motivation of adolescent …
'What On Earth Is She Drinking?' Doing Femininity Through Drink Choice On The Girls' Night Out, Emily Nicholls
'What On Earth Is She Drinking?' Doing Femininity Through Drink Choice On The Girls' Night Out, Emily Nicholls
Journal of International Women's Studies
In a supposed “post-feminist” society of gender equality, engagement with contemporary spaces such as the Night Time Economy (NTE) may offer young women positive opportunities to redefine femininities through leisure activities and alcohol consumption. Whilst the NTE is depicted as an increasingly “feminised” space where women’s drinking is normalised and expected, this essay will demonstrate some of the ways in which alcohol consumption remains highly gendered and women continue to be expected to buy into normative femininity through their beverage choice by looking at a specific mode of engagement with the NTE - the “girl’s night out”. Drawing on the …

Modeling Food Security, Energy, And Climate And Cultural Impacts Of A Process: The Case Study Of Shea Butter In Sub-Saharan Africa, Colleen Claire Naughton
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Millions of people in the world, particularly women and people in sub-Saharan Africa, suffer from hunger and poverty. Three of the major 2015-2030 United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aim to eliminate hunger through food security and sustainable agriculture, eradicate poverty, and achieve gender equality through women’s empowerment. Shea trees and their associated fruit and butter can play a major role in each of these three SDGs for women and their families throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Shea trees are located over a wide expanse stretching more than 5,000 kilometers across over eighteen countries in sub-Saharan Africa. These trees produce fruit that …

Human Trafficking Victims Are Everywhere And Nowhere: A Qualitative Content Analysis Of The United States Anti-Human Trafficking Campaign, 2000-2012., Billy James Ulibarri
Sociology ETDs
This dissertation explores the oppositional framing techniques used by actors in the United States anti-human trafficking (AHT) campaign. Theoretically based in symbolic interactionism, I conduct a frame analysis of 12 years of newspaper articles (2000-2012), which comprises the official discourse of the AHT campaign in the United States. I unpack three frame disputes, where claims are challenged and the challenges are rebutted in three primary disputes: 1) the characteristics and experiences of human trafficking victims, 2) the credibility of quantitative estimates of the prevalence of human trafficking, and 3) the justification for the development of new AHT policy tools. Using …

Research In Brief - "It's Kind Of Apples And Oranges": Gay College Males' Conceptions Of Gender Transgression As Poverty, Daniel Tillapaugh, Z Nicolazzo
Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs
This paper explores the ways in which gay males in college make meaning of gender variance and transgressions from the gender binary as a form of poverty. Using epistemological bricolage, the researchers analyzed data from 17 self-identified gay cisgender males attending three colleges in Southern California. Participants represented an array of racial backgrounds and were between 20 and 23 years old. The researchers posit that three key elements influence these gay males’ meaning making: (1) gender coding and policing, (2) hyperawareness of gender transgressions, and (3) reifying hegemonic masculinity.

The female offender population has been the fastest growing segment of the correctional population. Historically, victimization and trauma are highly correlated with substance abuse and dependency that are known to have a significant impact on females' pathway toward criminal lifestyle, incarceration, relapse, and recidivism. Due to feminists' research, today we know that females offenders' pathways toward substance abuse, criminal behavior, and recidivism differ from those of males. As a result, a discussion about the development and implementation of gender-specific substance abuse treatment programs has been initiated. The purpose of this study is to discover if research recommendations proposed, have been …
