Reported COVID-19 deaths in Germany are relatively low as compared to many European countries. Among the several explanations proposed, an early and large testing of the population was put forward. Most current debates on COVID-19 focus on the differences among countries, but little attention has been given to regional differences and diet. The low-death rate European countries (e.g. Austria, Baltic States, Czech Republic, Finland, Norway, Poland, Slovakia) have used different quarantine and/or confinement times and methods and none have performed as many early tests as Germany. Among other factors that may be significant are the dietary habits. It seems that …

Food barriers have become a growing problem for many communities due to lower access to healthy foods. Not having access to healthy foods has been linked to health problems rising in communities. There are several food barriers including affordability of food that causes individuals of low-income groups to struggle to gain access to fruits and vegetables. Communities across the world have been creating and implementing new policies and programs in order to reduce the geographic and monetary barriers to increase food access. The Sustainable Food Center has been utilizing their Double Dollars Program to help lower income families who are …

Clean Meat: Did We Under Or Over Estimate How Far This New Industry Could Grow?, Tyler R. Glick
Clean Meat: Did We Under Or Over Estimate How Far This New Industry Could Grow?, Tyler R. Glick
Honors Theses - Providence Campus
Soon lab-grown meat will be on the market for everyday consumers to purchase, but will it be successful as the companies producing it are predicting? Scholarly discussions on lab-grown meat are in their beginning stages with most attention being directed toward the production process (Kowitt 2017; Mitchell 2017: Schwartz & Conley 2018). The late decade of the 2010’s saw an increasing amount of coverage and interest in lab-grown meat. As the technology continues to advance, I hypothesize thatlab-grown meat will become more readily available to consumers; however, I question whether or not consumers are ready for such a change even …

The Effect Of Food And Nutrition On Families And Students Along With The Effects On Behavior And Academics In The Classroom, Katherine Anderson
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
Families and children around the world are trying to find the food they need to live healthy, balanced lives. There are many factors that contribute to the demise of this becoming a reality for them. Food deserts, low income, food insecurity and the mental stability of parents everywhere contribute to this demise. There are ways to overcome these issues. When children do not have the food they need to fuel their minds and bodies, including test scores, and behavior in the classroom are affected. Their mental capacity to learn is diminished along with behavior issues due to these same factors …

Social Networks, The Local Food Environment, And Maternal Food Choice For Children Ages 1 To 5 Years Old In Rural Mexico, Ligia Ivette Reyes
Theses and Dissertations
Children’s nutrition is largely determined by the food choices their primary caregivers make. Food choice for children has important implications for nutrition, development, and the dietary habits and preferences that are formed during early life food exposure. Little is known about the food environments in which food choices are made and the role of social networks in maternal food choice during habit- and preference-forming years in contexts undergoing nutrition transitions and facing the double burden of malnutrition. The overall objective of this study was to gain an indepth understanding about how mothers, as primary caregivers, make food choices for their …

Food In Prison: An Eighth Amendment Violation Or Permissible Punishment?, Natasha M. Clark
Food In Prison: An Eighth Amendment Violation Or Permissible Punishment?, Natasha M. Clark
Honors Thesis
This piece analyzes aspects such as; Eighth Amendment provisions, penology, case law, privatization and monopoly, and food law, that play into the constitutionality of privatized prisons using food as punishment. Prisoners have protection from excessive bail and fines and from cruel and unusual punishment, as per the 8th Amendment; however, deprivations such as restricted diets and harm caused by them is only a valid violation if the prisoner can prove deliberate indifference. Privatization of the prison industry has led to reduced quality, choice, and diversity in areas such as food, which comes at a detrimental cost to prisoners. Serving …

The social structure of primates has recently been shown to influence the composition of their microbiomes. What is less clear is how primate microbiomes might in turn influence their social behavior, either in general or with particular reference to hominins. Here we use a comparative approach to understand how microbiomes of hominins have, or might have, changed since the last common ancestor (LCA) of chimpanzees and humans, roughly six million years ago. We focus on microbiomes associated with social evolution, namely those hosted or influenced by stomachs, intestines, armpits, and food fermentation. In doing so, we highlight the potential influence …

Methods: The rapid assessment survey was collected in April 2020 across Houston, Dallas, Washington DC, and …
Prophylaxis Of Food Allergen Sensitivity, Dustin Gottfeld
Prophylaxis Of Food Allergen Sensitivity, Dustin Gottfeld
Physician Assistant Studies | Student Authored Articles
Food allergies can have a severe and drastic effect on a person’s lifestyle, while prevention of allergic disease can help to ensure others do not have to live with this burden. There are a variety of differing hypotheses that offer explanations for the early development of food allergies, particularly peanut allergies. Two of the foremost hypotheses are the Hygiene Hypothesis and the Dual-Allergen Hypothesis. The Hygiene Hypothesis claims that the diversity of a child’s microbiota creates a beneficial balance of microorganisms which can help prevent the development of allergic disease. Alternatively, the Dual-Allergen Hypothesis states that early environmental exposure to …

P.E.A.R Participation, Education, Action, And Resources: Combating Food Insecurity Through Collaboration, Aileen Assumma
West Chester University Master’s Theses
Students have been negatively impacted socially, academically and personally through the inability to provide enough nutritious meals to fuel their bodies. The higher education public system should be seen as a collaborative effort to educate institution employees on the issue of food insecurity as the first step in combating food insecurity among their local community. Creating a group of Community Advocates made up of members across the community will provide the opportunity for institutions to examine the systemic barriers put in place within higher education systems that hinder student ability to have sufficient access to food sources. I will validate …

A Default Option For Health : Improving Nutrition With The Financial And Geographic Constraints Of Food Insecurity, Jaime Ashley Coffino
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Food insecurity, the limited availability of nutritionally adequate food, is associated with increased risk for obesity and associated health problems. There is a crucial need for sustainable interventions that improve diet-related health in individuals with food insecurity. In behavioral economics, the default option is the option a consumer obtains if they do not make an active choice. The current study aims to improve the nutritional quality of groceries purchased online by individuals with food insecurity with the use of a prefilled online grocery shopping cart (i.e., a default option). Over the course of five weeks, food pantry users (n = …

The Impact Of Food Insecurity On Diabetes Prevalence In The Us: A Look At The Northeast And The Midwest, Richard Mensah
Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers
Diabetes is one of the most common chronic conditions globally. Various risk factors have been found to be associated with the incidence of diabetes. These include genetic predispositions, physical activity and diet. However, less attention has been given to the potential risk of food insecurity to diabetes prevalence. Therefore, the goal of this study was to look at the prevalence of food insecurity and diabetes in New York and Ohio, and try to see if a correlation exists between food insecurity and diabetes prevalence in these states.
In our methods, we used the 2019 data from County Health Rankings (CHR) …
